Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Matthew 17:27, what did Peter remove from the mouth of the animal shown?

Answer: coins

The tax collectors came to the disciple Peter and asked if Jesus would pay the temple tax, which was two drachma. Peter replied that Jesus would. When it was time to pay, Jesus told Peter to go to the lake and fish. When he caught the first fish, Peter would open its mouth and take out the four drachma and pay the temple tax with that--two drachma for Jesus and two drachma for Peter.
2. Why did the soldiers place a crown of thorns on Jesus's head shortly before His crucifixion?

Answer: The soldiers wished to mock Jesus.

The story of Jesus's crucifixion can be found in all four gospels (Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 19). Per the wishes of the soldiers, Pontius Pilate sentenced Jesus to be crucified for claiming He was the Messiah. The soldiers mocked Jesus, spat on Him, and placed a crown of thorns on His head as another way to mock Jesus.
3. John 21:15-17 describes how Jesus reinstated Peter as a disciple. What did Jesus have Peter do?

Answer: feed the sheep

After the resurrection, Jesus spent 40 days on Earth with several people, including the disciples. One of the things Jesus did during the time was to reinstate Peter. He did this by asking Peter if he truly loved Jesus then by asking him if he would feed the sheep. Jesus did this a total of three times, representing the three times Peter denied Jesus.

This event was only part of one gospel--that of John's.
4. What is the meaning behind the parable of the wedding banquet (Matthew 22:1-14)?

Answer: Listeners were to accept God's invitation to the Kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus told the parable of the wedding banquet as a way to teach others that they need to accept God's invitation to the Kingdom of Heaven.
In short, the parable is that a king's son is getting married and people have been invited to the wedding. However, these people would not go. The king decided to have his servants find anyone to join the wedding, whether good or bad, poor or rich. Likewise, God accepted anyone to be with Him in heaven, good or bad, poor or rich.
Those that didn't come represent those that say they will be with God but don't make the time to do so.
5. Which of the following did Simon of Cyrene do?

Answer: carried Jesus's cross

Simon of Cyrene was the one that was forced to carry Jesus's cross to Golgotha (Place of the Skull) where Jesus would be crucified. Simon was passing by the place from the country (as mentioned in Mark 15:21-22). Little is mentioned about Simon in the three gospels that he is mentioned in. Apart from Mark, Simon is mentioned in Matthew 27:32-33 and Luke 23:26-27. Only John does not mention him, mentioning Jesus was the one to carry the cross.
6. In all four gospels, Jesus made a triumphal entry into Jerusalem while riding the animal seen in the photo. What is the significance of that?

Answer: Jesus arrived in peace.

Shortly after raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem while riding a donkey. The donkey represented the fact that Jesus came in peace. Riding in on a horse represented that the rider came in war. The disciples borrowed a donkey saying that Jesus required it but the donkey would be returned.

In all gospels but John, it is mentioned that the disciples placed their cloaks on the donkey, so it would be an easier ride for Jesus. The story can be found in Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, and John 12:12-19. This entry into Jerusalem is celebrated as Palm Sunday, and it occurs one week before Easter.
7. A woman who had been bleeding for twelve years touched Jesus's robes and was healed. What miracle was Jesus going to perform when this happened?

Answer: raising a dead person

Jesus was called to the home of Jairus whose daughter had died. Jesus said healed the girl (who was stated to be twelve) and raised her from the dead. However, Jesus asked the girl's family not to mention this. On the way to Jairus's home, a woman who was bleeding for twelve years heard of Jesus and thought that if she touched Jesus's robes, she would be free from the bleeding. This indeed was the case.
The story of the bleeding woman and Jairus's daughter can be found in Matthew 9:18-26, Mark 5:21-43, and Luke 8:40-56.
8. Which parable did Jesus tell that related to not knowing the day or hour of Jesus's return? (Matthew 25:1-13)

Answer: Ten Virgins

The parable of the ten virgins states that of the ten virgins, five were wise and five were foolish. The five wise women took oil with them along with the lanterns; the five foolish ones only took the lantern at night. Eventually, the light from the lanterns of the foolish women ran out.

The wise women wouldn't give them oil, because there might not be enough left if the lanterns of the wise women ran out. Instead, the foolish women would have to buy some. The wise women made it to the wedding banquet. As Jesus said, everyone should keep watch, because Jesus would return but no one would know the day or the hour of Jesus's return.
9. Which disciple had an occupation that used the object seen in the photo?

Answer: Peter

Peter and his brother Andrew were both stated to be fishermen. Matthew (also called Levi) was a tax collector. James and his brother John were the son of a fisherman. In Biblical times, the son would have the same occupation as his father, so it's likely they were also fishermen. The occupations of the other disciples were unknown.
Matthew 5:18-22 mentions Jesus recruiting Peter and Andrew as His first disciples. James and John would shortly follow. The story is reiterated in Mark 1:14-20 and Luke 5:1-11.
10. Luke 13:10-17 tells of Jesus performing a miracle on the Sabbath. What was the wrong with the woman Jesus healed?

Answer: She was crippled.

On the Sabbath, Jesus was teaching at a synagogue when a woman stepped forward who had been crippled for 18 years. Jesus put His hands on her and she was healed. This surprised the synagogue rulers, since Jesus did work on the Sabbath when the Sabbath was suppose to be a day of rest. Jesus replied that there was nothing wrong with healing someone like her.

This pleased Jesus's followers but humiliated His enemies, who were hoping to catch Jesus doing something wrong.
