Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name shared by a son of Jacob and a man who told David to erect an alter to the LORD on a threshing floor?

Answer: Gad

Gad is the correct answer.

According to Genesis 35:26, Gad was the son of Jacob and Zilpah, Leah's maidservant. The same verse states Jacob and Zilpah were also the parents of Asher.

Meanwhile, Gad was also the name of a prophet of God during David's reign. 2 Samuel 24:18 tells of Gad giving instructions to David to "erect an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite."
2. What is the name shared by a woman who was both a prostitute and the wife of a prophet of God and a man who was the son of Japheth and grandson of Noah?

Answer: Gomer

According to Scripture, Gomer, a harlot, became Hosea's wife as a result of instruction from the LORD. Hosea 1:2-3, in the NKJV, states: "When the LORD began to speak by Hosea, the LORD said to Hosea: 'Go, take yourself a wife of harlotry and children of harlotry, for the land has committed great harlotry by departing from the LORD.' So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son." Scripture states the son was called Jezreel. Incidentally, the NIV Bible refers to Gomer as a "promiscuous woman" rather than a harlot.

Meanwhile, Genesis 10:2-3 tells of Noah having a grandson named Gomer. Japheth was Gomer's father. According to Scripture, Gomer was the father of Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah. However, no further details are given as he is mentioned in passing reference.
3. What is the name shared by a wicked king of Israel and the man Jeremiah called a lying prophet?

Answer: Ahab

Ahab is definitely not a good name in the Bible.

First, there was Ahab, the wicked king of Israel, who was married to Jezebel, generally regarded as the most wicked woman in the Bible. According to Scripture, Ahab and Jezebel vehemently opposed prophets of God and persuaded many Israelites to worship false gods. The story of Ahab can be found in 1 Kings, Chapters 16 through to 22.

The second man called Ahab was called a lying prophet by Jeremiah, a major prophet of God in the Old Testament. Jeremiah 29:21-23 has this to say about Ahab in the NKJV:

"'Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in My name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall slay them before your eyes. And because of them a curse shall be taken up by all the captivity of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, "The LORD make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire"; because they have done disgraceful things in Israel, have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and have spoken lying words in My name, which I have not commanded them. Indeed I know, and am a witness, says the LORD'."
4. What is the name shared by Hannah's husband and the man who was a son of Korah?

Answer: Elkanah

Two men in the Old Testament shared the name Elkanah.

Perhaps the best known Elkanah was the husband of Hannah and the father of Samuel, the last judge of Israel. Details about the life of Elkanah can be found in 1 Samuel 1:1-23.

The second Elkanah was the son of Korah, as per Exodus 6:24. Korah was the man who staged a rebellion against Moses in the wilderness and his life was suddenly ended in case of divine retribution when the earth opened up and swallowed him along with his supporters. (Details of Korah's death can be found in Numbers 16.) However, according to Numbers 26:11, Elkanah and other children of Korah were spared.
5. What is the name shared by the man known as Shadrach and a false prophet who attempted to contradict Jeremiah?

Answer: Hananiah

Hananiah is the correct answer.

The first man called Hananiah, was given a new name -- Shadrach. Similar to his friends, Hananiah was given the name by the chief of the eunuchs of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. The book of Daniel tells of Nebuchadnezzar ordering Hananiah and two of his friends thrown into a fiery furnace because they refused to bow to the king's image. Miraculously, they were unharmed by the flames.

Meanwhile, details about the second man called Hanaiah can be found in Jeremiah 28:1-17. The passage tells of Jeremiah being incensed with Hananiah proclaiming, because he "taught rebellion against the LORD." Verse 17 tells of Hananiah dying shortly after Jeremiah's proclamation.
6. What is the name shared by a man who was an apostate condemned by Paul and the man who was a member of a high priestly family?

Answer: Alexander

In 1 Timothy 1:19-20, Paul condemns Alexander as well as Hymenaeus, stating he "delivered" them to Satan "that they may learn not to blaspheme.". No further details are given.

According to Acts 4:5-6, the second Alexander was a member of the Sanhedrin when Peter and John appeared before the body. However, Alexander is only mentioned in passing reference.
7. What is the name of a man in the NKJV who became Paul's friend at Corinth and the surname of a man who was in the running to replace Judas Iscariot as a disciple?

Answer: Justus

Justus is the correct answer.

Acts 18:7 tells of Paul entering the house of "a certain man named Justus, one who worshiped God, whose house was next door to the synagogue." (The NIV refers to the man as Titius Justus.)

Meanwhile, Acts 1:23 tells of a man with the surname Justus being in the running with Matthias to replace Judas Iscariot as a disciple after Judas had committed suicide.

Acts 1:23-26 in the NKJV tells of Matthias being selected: "And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, 'You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.' And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles."
8. What is the name shared by a high priest in the New Testament and a man who was the husband of Sapphira?

Answer: Ananias

Ananias is the correct answer.

The first Ananias was a high priest who Paul appeared before and is mentioned in Acts 23 and 24. In Acts 23:2, Ananias showed his disdain for Paul when he "commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth."

The second Ananias was the husband of Sapphira. According to Scripture, both of them were struck dead by when they lied about presenting all the proceeds from the sale of their property to the early church. Details can be found in Acts 5:1-11.
9. What is the name shared by one of the original Twelve Disciples and a man who converted the Ethiopian eunuch?

Answer: Philip

Philip is the name shared by two men in the New Testament.

The first Philip was one of the original Twelve Disciples. According to John 1:44, he came from Bethsaida, the same community as Peter and Andrew. Some fascinating trivia about Philip: When ever his name appears as part of a list of the Twelve Disciples in the New Testament, he is fifth on the list.

Meanwhile, the second Philip was a Grecian Jew who was appointed as a deacon to assist others in his community, as per Acts 6:1-7. According to Acts 8:26-40, he converted the Ethiopian eunuch to Christianity. Going strictly by Scripture, the the eunuch would have been the first Christian in Africa.
10. What is the name shared by the father of Judas Iscariot and a man whose house Jesus visited in Bethany?

Answer: Simon

No less than five men in the New Testament shared the name Simon.

The first Simon in our question was the father of Judas Iscariot, as per John 6:71 as well as John 12:4, John 13:2 and 13:26. Little is known about Simon, however, as he is mentioned in passing reference in the verses.

The second man called Simon in our question was Simon the Leper, whose house Jesus visited in Bethany. (See Matthew 26:6-13 and Mark 14:3-9.) It was at Simon's house that Mary, the sister of Martha, anointed Christ's feet with expensive perfume. Details can be found in John 12:1-8.
