Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Chapter 1 of Matthew's gospel, the genealogy of Jesus includes Solomon, the wisest man in the Bible. What three women, apart from His mother Mary, are also mentioned by name in the genealogy?

Answer: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth

See Matthew 1: 1-17.
This is interesting since none of these women were ones whom one would expect to find in the genealogy of one whom Christians believe to be the Son of God.
Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah who disguised herself as a prostitute and waylaid him. Subsequently she gave birth to twins, Perez and Zerah (Genesis 38: 1-30).
Rahab was also a prostitute, in Jericho (Joshua 2:1-21).
Ruth was not even an Israelite but was from Moab (Ruth).
2. When Jesus was born, Magi - wise men - came from the East to find Him and worship Him. Where did they go first?

Answer: To King Herod in Jerusalem

See Matthew 2: 1.
Tradition says that there were three wise men and gives them the names of Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, but there is no Biblical evidence for this particular number. The surmise may have arisen since they are recorded as bringing three gifts - gold, frankincense and myrrh.
3. Matthew's gospel tells the story of two men, one wise and one foolish, whose work will be tested by time. What is their occupation?

Answer: Builders

See Matthew 7: 14-28.
This story is one of the parables that Jesus told, teaching that just as a house will fall if built upon sand and stand if built on rock, so lives must be built on the foundation of Jesus' teaching.
4. How did Jesus say that Wisdom was proved right?

Answer: By her actions

See Matthew 11: 18-19.
This comment comes at the end of a discourse about the way the Pharisees spoke about John the Baptist.
5. Jesus denounced the cities of Tyre and Sidon and thanked God that his teachings, though hidden from the wise and learned, were revealed to -- whom?

Answer: Little children

See Matthew 11: 25.
In this passage, Jesus was warning people of the consequences of ignoring his teaching.
6. "The Kingdom of Heaven will be like ____ virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom." Fill in the blank to complete the quote.

Answer: 10

See Matthew 25: 1.
The virgins in this story were the bridesmaids responsible for preparing the bride for the wedding.
7. What did the foolish virgins forget to bring in the story from Matthew 25?

Answer: Oil for their lamps

See Matthew 25: 1-13.
"Lamps" were really long poles with bundles of oil-drenched rags at the end. The oil had to be replenished about every fifteen minutes.
8. When Herod realized he had been outwitted by the wise men, what did he do?

Answer: He gave orders that all the baby boys of two years old and under should be killed.

See Matthew 2: 16-17.
Christians believe this event was prophesied in the Old Testament by the prophet Jeremiah in Jeremiah 31: 15.
9. How did the wise men find the place where the baby was?

Answer: They followed a star.

See Matthew 2 : 1-12.
Some scholars have identified the wise men's "star" as a conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn.
10. Jesus told the Pharisees and lawyers that He was greater than Solomon. Who did He say came to listen to Solomon's wisdom?

Answer: The queen of the South

See Matthew 12: 38-45.
The queen of the South is called the Queen of Sheba in the Old Testament. Sheba is likely a country southwest of Arabia, now called Yemen. Her story can be read in 1 Kings 10: 1-13.
