Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first thing cursed in the Bible?

Answer: the serpent in Eden

Genesis 3:14 - "So the Lord God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, "Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life." (NIV) This refers to the serpent tempting man into sin by eating from the tree of knowledge.

This is followed by God cursing the ground because of Adam's sin in Genesis 3:17, "Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, you must not eat from it. Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life."
2. To whom was this said? "I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

Answer: Jacob

Genesis 27 relates how Jacob deceived Isaac into giving him the elder son's blessing by disguising himself as Esau. The ruse was successful and Isaac blessed Jacob instead of Esau. It was through Jacob's son Judah that the Messianic line descended. Genesis 17:29 is the specific verse cited (NIV)
3. What term does Paul use in 1 Corinthians 16 that means the same thing as a curse?

Answer: Anathema

1 Corinthians 16:22 says, "If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha." (KJV). The word "anathema" means "cursed" and "maranatha" means "the Lord is coming." This means that if anyone does not want to get saved, they will be cursed when the Lord comes.
4. Which prophetic Old Testament Book ends with this phrase, "And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." (KJV)?

Answer: Malachi

This is the last verse of the Old Testament in standard Christian Bibles. Not a very happy ending, but Christians believe it looks forward to the redemption of Jesus who came into the world approximately 400 years after this was written.
5. Who did King Balak hire to curse the Israelites when they were on their way to the Promised Land?

Answer: Balaam

Balaam was on his way to do this when his donkey spoke to him, because she had gone off the road to avoid an angel and Balaam beat her. Balaam tried three times to curse the Israelites and ended up blessing them instead. These events are in Numbers 22 - 24.
6. Does Galatians 3:10 (NIV) mention a curse?

Answer: yes

Paul is admonishing the Galatians about obeying outmoded laws when faith in Jesus overturned the old traditions. The full verse is, "For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.'" (NIV)
7. A curse does not necessarily mean a condemnation; sometimes it means an oath or vow. In Acts 23:14, who was the intended victim of the men that had taken a curse to kill him?

Answer: Paul

The men planned to ambush the convoy that was going to take Paul to Governor Felix to be tried. However, Paul's nephew learned of the plot and informed the chief captain who was able to take measures to prevent the attack. The whole passage is in Acts 22:10-31.
8. Which of these Bible books never mentions a curse?

Answer: Esther

Verses with curses abound in both Testaments. Even Jesus cursed a fig tree when it has no fruit on it. Esther, a Jewish girl selected to be the wife of King Ahasuerus, used her position to save her people from extermination at the hands of Haman. However, in the ten chapters of the Book of Esther, no curses are mentioned.
9. Who cursed David in 1 Samuel 17:43?

Answer: Goliath

This the the famous story of David and Goliath. The whole context is in 1 Samuel 17.
10. "And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him." (KJV) Is this verse from the Old or New Testament?

Answer: New

It is the last mention of a curse in the Bible. It is found in Revelation 22:3.
