Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Jewish tradition, the first wife of Adam ended up leaving Eden and giving birth to demons. What was her name?

Answer: Lilith

Before Eve, there was Lilith. Known as the "mother of demons", Lilith refused to submit to Adam and chose to abandon paradise. She was forever after depicted as a vampire-like creature of the night who preyed on sleeping men and young children. Her offspring, called Lilim and Shedim, are supposed to be powerful evil spirits in their own right, and tormentors of humanity.
2. What is the process by which an evil spirit is forced out of a possessed person?

Answer: Exorcism

Exorcism was pretty far from public awareness until the 1973 movie "the Exorcist", which claimed to be based on a true story. Requests to the Catholic church spiked to more than FIVE TIMES what they had been in the 1950's, and today there are even a wide variety of exorcism-themed films to choose from.

Many religious orders have a process for expelling demons, but most call the practice exorcism.
3. In the Torah, the Nephilim were monsters created from the union of what two groups?

Answer: Humans and angels

The Nephilim were supposedly born of human women and angels known as Watchers, which were giants sent to observe the earth. The Nephilim were monstrous creatures, displeasing to God. After the Great Flood, the Nephilim were mostly killed off, though there were occasional subsequent mentions of them.
4. What was the demon Beelzebub's title?

Answer: Lord of the Flies

Synonymous with a book title in which the worst parts of human nature come to light, Beelzebub was called Lord of the Flies. He is often depicted as a monstrous demonic fly. Beelzebub may have come from the Philistine god Baal, whose name could have changed over retellings by the Philistines' enemies.
5. In Christian folklore, what was the demonic creature commonly depicted as having a goat's head with a woman's torso, or as a goat's head within a pentagram?

Answer: Baphomet

The goat is a symbol commonly associated with the Devil, but Baphomet was sometimes also associated with knowledge. Some rumors place an "altar of Baphomet" in the possession of the Knights Templar, who were known for their love of collecting artifacts as well as their fierce devotion to Christianity.
6. What are the names for the sexual vampires that medieval Jews and Christians believed prey on sleeping humans?

Answer: Succubi and Incubi

Female succubi and male incubi (singular: succubus and incubus) supposedly visit their victims during sleep and afflict them with sex dreams. The person will lose vitality and if they can't repel the demon, they will eventually die.
7. What 20th-century English sorcerer died of bronchitis in 1947, and had his ashes sent to America?

Answer: Aleister Crowley

Crowley was known for sexual deviancy, drug use, and communion with demons. His detailed accounts of his encounters with demonic entities are favorites of modern occultists. One of the spirits Crowley sketched, named Lem, looked a lot like the large-headed aliens which would become popular in sci-fi stories in the 1950's.
8. The Bible speaks of a massive creature that tradition says is a demon. Tradition connects this demon to the sin of Envy, and it is commonly depicted as being an ocean dweller. Which demon is this?

Answer: Leviathan

The Book of Job describes Leviathan as a massive, near-invulnerable creature with a back like rows of shields and eyes like eyelids of the dawn. In the second "Hellraiser" film, Leviathan appears as a massive, ever-changing shape in the skies over the labyrinth of Hell.

In addition to the massive Leviathan, who lived in the sea, there was also Behemoth, who lived on land, and Ziz, who was in the sky. All nasty customers.
9. In Zoroastrianism, what is the demonic source of all evil?

Answer: Ahriman

Ahriman and his twin, Ahura Mazda, are two extremes. One is purely good, the other purely evil, and they battle across earth for the fate of the universe. There are variations of the origins of Ahura Mazda and Ahriman, some describing both of them as being destined to trade off ownership of the world, others describing the battle as constant and equal.
10. Which demon arrived to tempt Faust (Doctor Faustus)?

Answer: Mephistopheles

The story of Faust, the doctor who sells his soul for knowledge, has been told and retold in many different forms, but his demonic assistant and tormentor is consistently Mephistopheles. In Goethe's poetic version of the story, Mephistopheles fails at the end and Faust is saved by God, with angels saying "Who ever strives with all his power, we are allowed to save."
Marlowe's Doctor Faustus isn't so lucky. Asked to repent, Faustus instead protests that his sins are too great, that he can't be forgiven, and goes to Hell without saying the words which could have absolved him.
