Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the names below, which two were once barren women in Genesis who were miraculously able to conceive?

Answer: Sarah and Rachel

Sarah and Rachel were both barren at one time, but miraculously gave birth. In fact, according to Genesis 17:17, Sarah was ninety years old when she gave birth to Isaac. Meanwhile, Rachel gave birth to Joseph and Benjamin, but no age is given for her. Similar to Sarah, she had been unable to conceive for the longest time. Genesis 35:18 states Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin.

Sarah was married to Abraham while Rachel was married to Jacob.
2. Out of the names below, which two were corrupt sons of Eli?

Answer: Hophni and Phinehas

Eli may have been the high priest and judge of Israel, but his two sons Hophni and Phinehas were liars, cheats and more. In fact, in the NKJV, they're described as "corrupt" and in the NIV as "scoundrels".

1 Samuel 2 tells of Hophni and Phinehas being out of control and disobeying sacred protocol when people came to the tabernacle of meeting to offer a sacrifice. The chapter also states the two men had sexual relations with women "who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting."

Scripture goes on to tell of Hophni and Phinehas dying in battle, with their deaths seen as divine retribution.
3. Out of the names below, which two were corrupt sons of Samuel?

Answer: Joel and Abijah

Samuel was an esteemed judge of Israel but his sons Joel and Abijah were notorious for being corrupt. In his old age, Samuel appointed his two sons as his replacement but the move infuriated the people, as 1 Samuel 8:3 states they participated in dishonest gain, took bribes and perverted justice.

As a result, the Israelites demanded the end of being represented by judges and the installation of a monarchy "like all the nations", as per Verse 4. Scripture goes on to tell of Saul becoming the first king of Israel, despite Samuel's misgivings about the matter.
4. Out of the names below, which two men were the sons of Joseph and Asenath?

Answer: Manasseh and Ephraim

Jospeh and Asenath had two sons and their names were Manasseh and Ephraim. According to Genesis 41:50-52, Jospeh called his firstborn Manasseh, "For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father's house." He called his second son Ephraim, "For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction."

Asenath was the daughter of Poti-Pherah, priest of On.
5. Out of the names below, which two were queens serving during the reign of Ahasuerus?

Answer: Esther and Vashti

Esther and Vashti were both queens during the reign of Ahasuerus, king of Persia. (In the NIV, Ahasuerus is known as Xerxes.) In the book of Esther, Vashti was the queen at the beginning of the book. However, Vashti ended up being replaced by Esther, who was selected by the king to be his new queen.

The book of Esther goes on to tell of Esther and her cousin Mordecai working together to prevent Haman from carrying out a plan to kill all the Jews in the Persian empire.
6. Out of the names below, which two were the husbands of Ruth?

Answer: Boaz and Mahlon

Ruth was married to Mahlon, the son of Elimelek and Naomi, and after Ruth became a widow, she married Boaz. Meanwhile, Kilion, a second son of Elimelek and Naomi, was married to Orpah. Both Ruth and Orpah were from Moab.

Scripture tells of Elimelek, Mahlon and Kilion dying and their wives becoming widows. While Orpah opted to move back to Moab, Scripture tells of Ruth staying with Naomi.

The book of Ruth is largely about the romance between Ruth and Boaz.
7. Out of the titles of Old Testament books below, which two are part of the Minor Prophet section of the Old Testament?

Answer: Haggai and Malachi

Haggai and Malachi are two of the twelve books that comprise the Minor Prophet section in the Old Testament. The ten other books that comprise the Minor Prophet section are Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah and Zechariah.

The twelve books in the Minor Prophet section are found at the end of the Old Testament.
8. Out of the names of New Testament books below, which ones were written by Paul?

Answer: Romans and 1 Corinthians

Out of the titles of the New Testament books, Paul wrote Romans and 1 Corinthians. In fact, he is credited with writing a total of thirteen books in the New Testament. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, was once a Pharisee and a vehement opponent of Christians. Things changed dramatically, however, when Paul was travelling to Damascus and encountered the resurrected Jesus Christ. For details of Paul's conversion, see Acts 9:1-31.
9. Out of the choices below, which two were names referring to one of the original Twelve Disciples who was recruited by Philip?

Answer: Nathanael and Bartholomew

Nathanael and Bartholomew is the correct answer. John 1:43-51 tells of Philip recruiting Nathanael to become a disciple of Jesus. Although Nathanael was initially cool to the idea of Jesus being the Messiah, he had an entirely different opinion when he met Jesus. In Verse 49, he proclaims Jesus to be "the son of God" and the "king of Israel".

In Matthew, Mark, Luke and Acts, Nathanael is known as Bartholomew.
10. Out of the choices below, which two were names referring to one of the original Twelve Disciples who was a tax collector?

Answer: Matthew and Levi

Matthew, a member of the original Twelve Disciples and a former tax collector, was also known as Levi. When a list of disciples' names are given in Scripture, Matthew is used, as per Mark 3, Luke 6 and Acts 1. However, he is also identified as Levi elsewhere in Mark and Luke.

According to Mark 2:14, he was the son of Alphaeus.
