Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Mark 10:46, who was the father of blind Bartimaeus?

Answer: Timaeus

Timaeus is the correct answer. However, little is known about Timaeus because he is mentioned only once in Scripture, and in passing reference. Mark 10:46 in the NKJV tells of Jesus encountering Bartimaeus at Jericho: "Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging."

A few moments later, Bartimaeus' days of darkness and begging would come to an abrupt end as Jesus would miraculously restore his sight, according to Scripture.
2. A passage from the Old Testament has been set to music and featured in a modern folk song. The first verse goes like this: "To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven." What book contains the verse?

Answer: Ecclesiastes

The verse in question comes from Ecclesiastes 3:1.

Much of the third chapter of Ecclesiastes was set to music in 1959 by Pete Seeger and in 1965 The Byrds, an American band, released a rendition of the song titled "Turn, Turn Turn (To Everything There is a Season)". The song quickly became an international hit. According to Wikipedia, "Turn, Turn Turn (To Everything There is a Season)" hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S. and Number 26 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was popular for a number of reasons, not the least of which was it struck a chord with a world which was desperately seeking peace at a time when the War in Vietnam was dominating the headlines and newscasts of the day.

The song was first released by the folk group The Limeliters on their 1962 album 'Folk Matinee'. Judy Collins also released a version of the song in 1963. However, the version by The Byrds would prove to be far and away the most successful.
3. Scripture tells of a leader of the Israelites being angered by their decision to have a king rule over them. According to Scripture, the leader stressed to the Israelites that it was imperative they continued following the commands of the LORD, or there would be dire consequences. To prove his point, Scripture says the leader vowed he would call on the LORD to "send thunder and rain, that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great." What was the name of the man?

Answer: Samuel

Samuel was angry over a request by the people to have a king rule over them. 1 Samuel 9 tells of Saul, the son of Kish, being selected as the first king of the Israelites. According to Scripture, Samuel warned the Israelites there would be dire consequences if they stopped following the LORD and gave their devotion to a king. To prove his point, Samuel vowed he would call on God to "send thunder and rain."

And sure enough, the vow was fulfilled and thunder and rain struck in the midst of the wheat harvest. Details can be found in Samuel 12:16-18.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Israel receives the vast majority of its rainfall during the winter season and for rain to fall during the wheat harvest would be "most unusual."
4. Scripture tells of Jesus, while still a child, engaging in theological discussion with "astonished" Jewish rabbis in a temple. According to Luke 2:42, how old was Jesus at the time?

Answer: Twelve years

According to Luke 2:42, Jesus was twelve years old when He participated in an apparently in-depth discussion with the rabbis. Details can be found in Luke 2:41-50. According to the passage, all who heard Him were "astonished at His understanding and answers."

Details about a twelve-year-old Jesus engaging the rabbis in theological discussion are found in only the Gospel of Luke.
5. Acts 17:24, in the NKJV, tells of Paul making the following statement to a group of people: "God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands." Where was Paul when he made the statement? (Hint: He was in a city where there was an altar constructed in honor to an unknown god.)

Answer: Athens

Paul was in Athens when he made the statement. According to Scripture, Paul had an attentive audience when he made his pitch, professing Jesus as the Son of God. However, things apparently went awry when he started talking about resurrection of the dead. Acts 17:32 states some mocked Paul after he talked about the issue while others said, "We will hear you again on this matter." Nevertheless, according to Verse 34, some Athenians became believers in a resurrected Jesus Christ "among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them."

During his presentation, Paul makes reference to a statue dedicated to an "unknown god" Details about Paul's presentation to the Athenians can be found in Acts 17:22-32.
6. 2 Samuel 4:4 tells of a five-year-old son of Jonathan becoming lame in both feet when his nurse, who was fleeing with him, accidentally dropped him. What was the name of the five-year-old boy?

Answer: Mephibosheth

Mephibosheth, according to Scripture, became lame in his feet when his nurse, who was fleeing with him, accidentally dropped him during a time when the Israelites were in a civil war to determine who would become king. One side in the civil war backed David and the other side backed Ishbosheth, the son of Saul.

Incidentally, David and Jonathan, Mephibosheth's father, were the best of friends. This, even though Jonathan's father Saul devoted much of his latter life trying to kill David. 2 Samuel 9:7 states that David restored to Mephibosheth all the land that belonged to his grandfather Saul and he ensured he would "always dine at his table with him."
7. According to 1 Kings 17:1, a prophet of God proclaimed to King Ahab there would not be dew or rain, "except at my command." Who was the plucky prophet who rained on Ahab's parade?

Answer: Elijah

Elijah is the correct answer. In 1 Kings 17:1, the prophet of God boldly proclaimed to Ahab: "As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word."

According to 1 Kings 18:1, the drought finally ended in the third year. The chapter goes on to tell of the drought ending after Elijah's spectacular victory over 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.
8. What's the two-word name of the new city John of Patmos writes about in Revelation, as per the NIV and the NKJV? (Revelation 3:12)

Answer: New Jerusalem

According to Wikipedia, New Jerusalem is also known as The Tabernacle of God, Holy City, City of God, Celestial City and Heavenly Jerusalem in the Book of Revelation, as well as Jerusalem Above, Zion and shining city on a hill in other books of the Bible.

The New Jerusalem is first mentioned in Revelation 3:12. Much of the 21st chapter of Revelation is devoted to details about the New Jerusalem.
9. Who served as Paul's secretary when he dictated the words for the Book of Romans? (Romans 16:22)

Answer: Tertius

Romans 16:22, states "I, Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord." There is no further mention of him in Scripture. According to Biblos.com, a website that serves as a Bible encyclopedia, some theologians suspect Tertius was a friend of Silas, while others believe he was a Roman Christian living in Corinth. It's all speculation, of course.
