Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the four names below, which one was a twin son of Judah and Tamar? (Genesis 38:29)

Answer: Perez

The correct answer is Perez, an ancestor of King David, as per Ruth 4:18-22. Perez's name also shows up in the genealogy of Jesus in the third chapter of Luke. The twin brother of Perez was Zerah.

Genesis 38:27-30, in the NKJV Bible, offers this account of Tamar giving birth: "Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb. And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, 'This one came out first'. Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, 'How did you break through? This breach be upon you!' Therefore his name was called Perez. Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand. And his name was called Zerah."
2. Which one was a son of the high priest Eli and ended up being killed in battle when the Philistines captured the Ark of God? (1 Samuel 4:17)

Answer: Hophni

The death of Hophni is told in the fourth chapter of First Samuel, which also tells of the deaths of Hophni's brother Phinehas, his father Eli and his unnamed sister-in-law. Hophni and Phineas were killed in a battle with the Philistines at Ebenezer, where the enemy captured the Ark of God, according to Scripture.

1 Samuel 4:12-18 tells of Eli falling off his chair and breaking his neck before dying. According to Scripture, Eli fell off his chair after learning of the deaths of his two sons and the capture of the Ark of God. Meanwhile, the death of Phinehas' wife is told in 1 Samuel 4:18-22. Scripture states she died during childbirth.

1 Samuel 4:21-22, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Then she named the child Ichabod, saying, 'The glory has departed from Israel!' because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband. And she said, 'The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured'."
3. David had a treasurer who, according to Scripture, was famous for his wisdom. However, he made a crucial mistake when he deserted David and joined Absalom when he attempted to become king in a bloody coup. What's the treasurer's name? (2 Samuel 15:12)

Answer: Ahithophel

The correct answer is Ahithophel. Although he wasn't loyal to David, his son was Eliam, one of the mighty warriors in David's army. It appears Ahithophel was more of a hindrance than a help for Absalom, however. According to 2 Samuel 15:31, when David learned Ahithophel had joined Absalom's camp, David prayed the "LORD would turn Ahithophel's counsel into foolishness". Ahithophel's advice would prove to be useless and, after Absalom stopped listening to him, Scripture reports that Ahithophel put his house in order and hanged himself.
4. Paul is traditionally credited with writing thirteen books in the New Testament. In the order the books appear, what's the name of his first book?

Answer: Romans

Romans appears just after Acts and is the first of thirteen books Paul is credited with writing. Many theologians believe Paul wrote the book in 57 A.D., just a year before he was arrested in Jerusalem followed by imprisonment in Rome. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible has this to say about the book: "Romans serves as the flagship of the fleet of Pauline letters within the New Testament.

This letter has also loomed large in the history of Christianity. Countless men and women of faith have singled out Romans as the weapon God graciously used to bring about their surrender to Christ. Augustine, Martin Luther, John Wesley and others received unexpected spiritual volleys that pierced their defenses and ended their rebellion against God."
5. According to Isaiah 7:14, in the NKJV Bible, "...behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son" and He will have a name that translates as 'God With Us'. What's the name of the child?

Answer: Immanuel

Immanuel, which means 'God with us', is the correct answer. According to Isaiah 7:14, Immanuel would be born of a virgin, with many Christians believing this is direct reference to the Virgin Mary giving birth to Jesus. Immanuel is also spelled as Emmanuel in some versions of the Bible.

The name Immanuel can be found only in Isaiah in the Old Testament and Matthew 1:23 in the New Testament.
6. After raising Dorcas from the dead, what's the name of the man Peter stayed with, as per Acts 9:36-43?

Answer: Simon the Tanner

Peter stayed with Simon the Tanner after raising Dorcas from the dead, as per Acts 9:36-43. However, little is known about Simon the Tanner, although his name appears three different times in Scripture. In each case (Acts 9:43, 10:6 and 10:32) it states Peter was staying with Simon.

In both references in the 10th chapter, it states Simon the Tanner's house was by the sea. In that chapter, an unnamed angel of the Lord tells Cornelius he must summon Peter who was staying with Simon the Tanner. Cornelius, of course, was one of the first Gentile believers in a resurrected Christ with perhaps only the Ethiopian Eunuch coming before him.
7. What was the name of the young man who fell asleep and tumbled out of a third story window when Paul preached on and on? (Acts 20:7-12)

Answer: Eutychus

Eutychus fell out of a third story window at Troas, when Paul preached on and on, according to Acts 20:7-12. After Eutychus tumbled out the window, people rushed downstairs and found him dead. According to Scripture, Paul raised the young man from the dead and went back upstairs and ate and did some more preaching. Troas is in present day Turkey, south of the ancient city of Troy.
8. What was the name of the woman in the early church at Philippi who was apparently at loggerheads with Syntyche, as per Philippians 4:2?

Answer: Euodia

Euodia and Syntyche did not get along, it seems. This even though they both labored with Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. However, little light is shed on the situation.

In Philippians 4:2-3, in the NKJV Bible, Paul writes: "I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life."

Philippi is the same community in which Paul converted Lydia and her family as well as the jailer and his family to Christianity. Details of their conversion are found in Acts 16:11-40.
9. Who helped Jesus carry the cross to his crucifixion, as per Matthew 27:32, Mark 15:21 and Luke 23:26?

Answer: Simon of Cyrene

Simon of Cyrene is the correct answer. Little is known about Simon, but Mark 15:21 states he was the father of Alexander and Rufus. According to the
"International Standard Bible Encyclopedia", Cyrene was a city of Libya in North Africa. It was separated from ancient Egypt by a portion of the Libyan desert.
10. Now take the first letter from each answer to come up with a nine-letter name for a group of people mentioned in the New Testament.

Answer: Pharisees

Many of the Pharisees were bitterly opposed to the teachings of Jesus, although there were two notable exceptions: Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. Nicodemus is the man who approached Jesus at night and according to the third chapter of John, Jesus told him he must be "born again".

Joseph of Arimathea, as well as Nicodemus, is mentioned in John 19. The chapter tells of Joseph going to Pilate after the crucifixion to place Jesus' body in a tomb. According to Scripture, Nicodemus, assisted Joseph in preparing the body for burial.

John 19:38-41, in the NKJV, states: "After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid."

Despite the exceptions, the Pharisees were vehemently opposed to Jesus and His teachings and were largely responsible for setting up a series of events that led to Christ's crucifixion. Scripture, however, states Jesus rose from the dead on the third day and after appearing to a number of people, ascended to Heaven. The world would never be the same.
