Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Seventh-day Adventist Church grew from which mid-1800s' movement?

Answer: Millerite

William Miller was a New York farmer who came to believe that the date of Messiah's return could be calculated by using numbering systems found in the Biblical books of Daniel, Ezekiel, and Revelation. Miller prophesied that October 22, 1844 would herald Messiah's return, and approximately 100,000 Millerites sold their possessions in anticipation of this event, which came to be known as "The Great Disappointment".
2. This man was called the "apostle of the Sabbath" and wrote "The Seventh Day Sabbath, a Perpetual Sign".

Answer: Joseph Bates

Adventists believe that the Sabbath should be observed on Saturday (Friday sunset to Saturday sunset). They find no biblical validity in celebrating Sunday as the Sabbath. Joseph Bates was converted to this view after reading the writings of T. M. Preble. He is considered to have been instrumental in persuading James White and Ellen G. White of the truth of the seventh day Sabbath.
3. The Adventists emphasize the following:

Answer: All of these

John Harvey Kellogg worked at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, an organization that followed the principles of the Adventists. In 1897, John Harvey and his brother, William, started the Sanitas Food Company and produced whole grain cereals. William's insistence on adding sugar to the cereals caused an irreparable rift between the Kellogg brothers, and in 1906 William started a separate company which we know today as the "Kellogg Company".
4. What do the Adventists call their sundown worship services?

Answer: Vespers

Vespers held at sundown on Friday, can be conducted at home or in church. Before sundown, Seventh-day Adventists may clean their homes and cook their meals in preparation for the Saturday Sabbath.
5. How do the Adventists usually begin their program of Saturday worship?

Answer: Sabbath School

Sabbath School for the Adventists is similar to Sunday School in other denominations. It's held before the regular worship service, and starts with a song service followed by a lesson taken from a study guide called "the quarterly". Each age group has its own quarterly, which is used by Seventh-day Adventists worldwide.
6. The Seventh-day Adventists recommend vegetarianism.

Answer: True

If meat is eaten, the church believes that members should follow the Biblical laws regarding "clean" and "unclean" meats or fish as found in Leviticus 11. They also abstain from alcohol and tobacco. Research financed by the National Institute of Health has concluded that the average Adventist lives four to ten years longer than the average Californian due to his healthy lifestyle.
7. How often do Seventh-day Adventists celebrate communion?

Answer: Four times a year

The Communion service starts with a foot-washing ceremony based on John 13 where Jesus washed the feet of his disciples prior to the Last Supper. This ritual is called the "Ordinance of Humility". Men and women go to separate rooms to participate in this Ordinance, but regroup in the main sanctuary afterwards for the serving of communion.
8. What is the order of the four levels in the Adventist organization (from the bottom up)?

Answer: Local church, local conference, union conference, general conference

The General Conference has thirteen geographic divisions. It is the final authority in the church and is headed by a president who is elected every five years.
9. What is the official television network of the Seventh-day Adventist church?

Answer: The Hope Channel

The Hope Channel debuted October 10, 2003 and broadcasts 24/7. The theme of the network is "Bringing God's Truth Home". The Hope Channel also operates six international channels.
10. Where are the headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist church?

Answer: Silver Spring, Maryland

In 1989 the Adventists opened a 300,000 square foot headquarters building in Silver Spring, Maryland. During the Christmas season the atrium is used for the popular "Walk Through Bethlehem" interactive drama. In April, 2000 the Adventists opened the Potomac Adventist Book and Health Food Store also in Silver Spring.

This was touted as the largest Christian bookstore in both size and sales, with 40,000 square feet and over 25,000 books, magazines, CDs, etc.
