Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Organ made up of four chambers

Answer: Heart

In humans and most animals, the primary function of the heart is to pump blood through blood vessels which allows for circulation of oxygen and nutrients. The heart is made up of four chambers, two atria and two ventricles. The right atrium is responsible for oxygen poor blood, which is then pumped through the right ventricle and to the lungs.

The left atrium receives oxygen rich blood which is then pumped through the left ventricle and to the body.
2. Muscular walled tubes

Answer: Arteries

Arteries are vessels that take blood from the heart to all other parts of the body such as the lungs, tissues, kidneys and, most importantly, the brain. The main artery in the human body is the aorta while the smallest blood vessels are known as capillaries. For the most part, arteries carry oxygenated blood, however the pulmonary and umbilical arteries carry deoxygenated blood.
3. Smallest blood vessels in the body

Answer: Capillaries

Capillaries are small blood vessels that help distribute oxygenated blood from the arteries to the tissues in the body. They also take deoxygenated blood from the tissues and bring it back to the veins. While they are extremely small, at between five and ten micrometers in diameter, they are extremely important as they function as one of the main ways that nutrients and oxygen are delivered to human cells.
4. Carries blood from various organs to the liver

Answer: Portal vein

The portal vein is the essential vessel that transports blood from various parts of the internal system to the liver. Integral parts include the gastrointestinal tract, gallbladder, pancreas, and the spleen. It is estimated that at least 75% of blood flow to the liver is done through this vein. Unlike many other blood vessels and veins, the portal vein does not drain into the heart but rather into blood vessels called sinusoids in the liver.

In doing so, this allows for any toxins to be detoxified before being into circulation and allows the liver to be the first organ to take in nutrients.
5. Organs that allow the body to inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide

Answer: Lungs

The primary function of the lungs is to take in the oxygen breathed in and assist it in entering the red blood cells. These red blood cells then carry the oxygen throughout the body. The lungs also help to get rid of any carbon dioxide that is exhaled. If too much carbon dioxide is retained in the blood it can cause serious harm to the body's organs and has the potential to cause respiratory failure.
6. Through cerebral circulation, blood is moved through a network of arteries and veins to this organ

Answer: Brain

The brain is an organ that is the center of the nervous system. It is a sense and neurological organ that is responsible for a variety of functions including thought and perception, motor control, and thought and memory. The brain also has a central function within the cardiovascular system as it is the organ responsible for homeostasis. Homeostasis is a process by which human bodies can maintain a stable state and proper internal environment.

The brain plays a major role in maintaining blood oxygen levels, blood sugar levels, and water and salt content and control.
7. Veins that return deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart

Answer: Vena cava

In humans, there are two vena cava - the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava. The inferior vena cava is the largest vein in the human body and is located below the heart while the superior vena cava is located above the heart.
8. Main artery in the human body

Answer: Aorta

The aorta originates in the left ventricle and then extends towards the abdomen region of the body. Once at the abdomen, it splits into two smaller arteries. All areas of the body receive oxygenated blood from the aorta with the exception of the respiratory portion of the lungs.

The aorta helps to maintain blood flow throughout the body and its velocity. The aorta is branched into various sections that include the ascending aorta, aorta arch, descending aorta, and terminal branches.
9. Bean shaped organs that filter water and toxins from blood

Answer: Kidneys

The kidneys are responsible for assisting in the removal of waste products from the body, which are then passed in the form of urine as part of the renal system. They also serve a purpose within the circulatory system. As they remove waste products, they help to filter the blood before it is returned to the heart.

The kidneys are crucial in allowing the body to maintain fluid balance, filtering minerals from the blood, filtering wastes such as medications and toxic substances, and they also help to create hormones.
10. Fluid that delivers nutrients and oxygen throughout the human body

Answer: Blood

Ir order for the body to produce blood, it needs red and white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. When these materials are lacking, or they have been compromised, it can cause serious health issues for humans including hemophilia, leukemia, and anemia. Blood itself serves many functions for the body including regulating core temperature, coagulation, supplying oxygen, and the removal of waste and toxins such as carbon dioxide and urea. Proper blood flow also allows for the supply of nutrients such as amino and fatty acids to be distributed throughout the body.
