Which 'red and white' country gives its name to these versatile knives? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Animals can threaten your survival. Wolves, for example, can kill a human being very easily if they think they are getting provoked, so if you see a wolf approaching, stop and think: which of the following should you do in this situation? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Going camping can be fun, but getting lost isn't really fun at all! If you get lost, stop before you do anything, and think: which of these would be the most intelligent thing to do if it is possible?

Answer: Stay in one place with other people

When lost, always stay where you are (unless there is an obvious danger in that location). This way, rescuers should find you much more easily than if you were moving around. If possible, and if traveling in a group, stay together, since this will keep you in communication, prevent dangerous situations, and will provide others for warmth in case of cold.
2. Since water is essential to human life, you could suppose that the first thing you need for survival is this liquid. When looking for water to drink, stop before getting anything in your body. Then, think: which of these would represent the safest alternative to drink out of the following options, when attempting to survive in the woods or in a mountain, for example?

Answer: Water from a stream

All non-treated water is somewhat dangerous, as you never know what can be hiding in it! Running water is certainly the safest source out of the above, but it could've come into contact with many types of bacteria on its way. Not all running water is safe, but eating snow will only make things worse, as not only will it freeze you (leading to hypothermia), but your body will waste energy in melting the snow, and dehydrate you rather than hydrating you. Salt water should never be consumed, as the salt will dehydrate you and kill you faster than if you hadn't drunk it in the first place, and could cause you to hallucinate.

As to stagnant water, it is very likely that it will be contaminated since it is not running and mosquitoes and other organisms spread several diseases. It is better to avoid this type of water as much as possible.
3. Let's say you are stuck in the middle of a water-surrounded area. Before swimming and tiring yourself, stop, and look around for materials you could use to build a raft. Which of these, that you could probably find in the woods and which pandas like very much, would be the best option to build a raft?

Answer: Bamboo

Given that bamboo is not very absorbent, and easily floats on water, the tree is a great alternative for an improvised raft in case you should need one. Although you could also build rafts with the other types of wood mentioned, they are much weaker than bamboo, and rot more easily. Interestingly, "balsa" translates to "raft" in Spanish.
4. If you get lost, it is very likely that, at some point, you will be hungry, and tempted to eat anything you can find. Nevertheless, stop before you do! You should be careful with what you eat, especially foods like berries or mushrooms, as well as some plants. Why is this?

Answer: They might be poisonous

Humans can survive for quite some time without ingesting any food, so if you can't find any safe food to eat, it's much better to starve than to get sick or poisoned. Berries and mushrooms should be avoided, since they could be poisonous and kill you before you even get a chance to survive! In case of emergency, insects and bugs make good food, but always cooked, because of the parasites they could be carrying. Even snakes have protein! Just be careful, it's not really that much fun to get bitten.
5. Being lost in a dark forest sure is stressful, but before you do anything that will only make matters worse, stop and remember the following. How many campfires or gunshots or whistles are usually accepted as a universal distress signal?

Answer: 3

The usually accepted universal distress signal is a formation of three things or sounds. These could be three campfires lined up in a row or in triangle shape, firing three gunshots, whistling three times, or even flashing with a reflective object, like a mirror, three times. Knowing this could save your life, since a helicopter, for example, could see the three campfires lined up and understand the signal.
6. If you decide that you might find yourself spending more time than planned before being rescued, it may be useful to build a shelter. Before you do, stop and think: which of these should you NOT do when building a shelter?

Answer: Build it in a hidden, enclosed location

Building a shelter is a smart thing to do if you decide you could spend the night lost as at least you will have a place to sleep and protect you from the cold. Trees make great shelter-builders, and branches and leaves help repel water and keep you warm, in addition to giving you shadow if there's too much sun. Building a shelter which is hidden is a bad idea, as you will prevent people from finding you, and it will be counter-productive. Also, don't waste too much energy building the shelter, you might need it later!
7. In survival situations, a knife could come in handy for cutting many things. Before you go camping, stop and make sure you have a world-famous army knife, known for also having a screwdriver and a can opener, among many other functional features. Which 'red and white' country gives its name to these versatile knives?

Answer: Switzerland

The Swiss Army knife was mainly designed by Karl Elsener, with his company Victorinox. The knife was intended to help soldiers with tasks such as opening cans and to function as a screwdriver for assembling or disassembling weapons. The knife became very popular among United States soldiers, who called them "Swiss Army knives" because they couldn't pronounce the German version of the name.

A knife can be very helpful in survival situations and you should always carry one if heading to camp! They offer some protection from wild animals, as well as many other features.
8. Animals can threaten your survival. Wolves, for example, can kill a human being very easily if they think they are getting provoked, so if you see a wolf approaching, stop and think: which of the following should you do in this situation?

Answer: Throw food at the wolves

Believe it or not, your safest bet out of the options given is throwing food for the wolves. These animals should not be treated like you would treat a dog, since their bite, for example, is significantly different from that of a dog. Wolves follow their natural instincts, which is why, if you encounter one, you should walk away slowly and facing forward, since showing them your back might activate an instinctive reaction to attack. Never stare at wolves directly in their eyes, since they take this as a challenge.
9. Fire is essential for surviving if you're lost in the woods, but before you start a fire with any type of wood, stop and think: if you're in a hurry to start a fire quickly, would you use soft woods like willow and pine?

Answer: Yes

Soft woods such as willow, pine, spruce and willow are great for a quick fire since they light very fast. In contrast, hard woods like oak have a high density and will make the fire burn slower. Dry wood is the best option.

Fire plays a pivotal role in survival, since it is a source of heat, helps keep animals away, and of course, cooks food and purifies water.
10. If you find yourself in any risk situation where you are lost and want to survive, STOP! Don't panic, and remember the STOP acronym. Which of these would correctly represent how you should proceed when lost in the woods?

Answer: Sit down, Think, Observe, Prepare

The only way to survive is to remain calm and breathe before doing anything that might put you in more danger than you already are. Follow STOP:

S: sit down, relax and calm down before you do anything.
T: think, reflect on your current situation and how you can safely get out of it.
O: observe, look around what surrounds you so you can locate temporary shelter, food and water, and any possible dangers.
P: prepare, you might be in that spot for some time, so gather materials to warm you up, eat or drink.
