Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team in the 1960s had the worst win-loss season record in the decade?

Answer: New York Mets

Toronto and St. Louis did not exist in the decade. The Mets' franchise began in 1962, and had a dismal season by going only 40-120. Richie Ashburn was the only starting player who batted over .300 (.306), and no pitcher won over 10 games in the season. Casey Stengel was at the helm of the team. The Mets would lose more than 100 games in each of their first four seasons.
2. Which team made it to the most World Series appearances in the 1960s?

Answer: Yankees

The others did not appear in any World Series in the 1960s. The team in the pinstripes made it to five World Series in the decade. The Yankees lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960, via a series-winning walk-off home run by Bill Mazeroski in game seven.

Then the Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds in 1961, then the Giants in 1962. That was followed up with two losses to the Dodgers in 1963, then the Cardinals in 1964.
3. Which pitcher in the decade won the most games in a season?

Answer: Denny McLain

Both Feller and Lemon were already retired. Koufax did win 27 games in 1966 with the Dodgers, but McLain was the first 30-game winner since Dizzy Dean in the 1930s. Denny was a Detroit Tiger in 1968 with his 31-6 record.
4. Which pitcher in the 1960s set a season record most strikeouts?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax of the Dodgers broke Cleveland Indian Bob Feller's record set in 1946. Sandy whiffed 382 batters in 1965. Nolan Ryan broke Koufax's record in 1973 when he struck out 383. Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals threw the most strikeouts in the decade by fanning an amazing 2071.
5. Boston's Carl Yastrzemski batted for a Triple Crown in 1967. Who was the only other batter to hit for a Triple Crown in the decade?

Answer: Frank Robinson

Both Cey and Gwynn were not in Major League Baseball in the 1960s. After playing for the Reds, then being traded to the Orioles in 1966, Robinson hit for the Triple Crown. What a stellar season for Frank as he won the AL Babe Ruth Award, Major League Player of the Year, AL MVP, and World Series MVP, all in 1966.
6. Who hit the most home runs in a season during the 1960s?

Answer: Roger Maris

The Yankee Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's record when he hit 61 in 1961. It was the most famous asterisk in baseball because Babe Ruth's 60 home runs in 1927 was hit in a 154-game season. Maris hit his in 1961 in a 162-game season. The asterisk was erased from the record books when McGwire hit 70 in 1998.
7. Which team in the decade had the biggest improvement in winning games from one season to the next?

Answer: New York Mets

The 1969 Amazin' Mets were just that. After losing more than 100 games in a season five times in their first six seasons, the team went 73-89 in 1968. In 1969, they improved by 27 wins to win the National League pennant, then the World Series against the Orioles.
8. Roger Maris won two season MVP awards in the 1960s. Which of the following players won one each in both the National and American League?

Answer: Frank Robinson

The others did not win a MVP in the 1960s, let alone in each league. Robinson won his first as a Cincinnati Red in 1961, then his second in 1966 with the Orioles when he batted for the Triple Crown.
9. Dodger Sandy Koufax was on top of the mound when he won three Cy Young awards in the 1960s. Which other pitcher won two in the decade?

Answer: Denny McLain

The others won the award once in the decade. McLain was a Tiger and went 31-6 in 1968, then he won it in the following season in 1969 with his 24-9 record. Amazingly enough, he went 3-5 in 1970, then 10-22 with the Senators in 1971. He was out of baseball after the 1972 season due to gambling issues.
10. The Houston Major League franchise began it all 1962 under which team name?

Answer: Colt .45s

The Houston Colt .45s were an expansion team in the National League in 1962. They lost 90+ games every season in their first seven seasons. They changed their name to the Astros in 1965. Houston appeared in their first World Series in 2005, but lost to the White Sox four games to none.
