The prologue was 4.6km long. Thor rode for Crédit Agricole. He won by four seconds over Markel Irizar of Euskaltel-Euskadi. Stefan Schumacher placed third in the prologue. Stefan rode for Gerolsteiner.

Gert Steegmans rode for Team Quick Step. The second place finisher, Jérôme Pineau, rode for Bouygues Télécom. The Norwegian cyclist, Thor Hushovd, placed third overall in the stage. The other two survived the crash and finished the stage. Andrei fell instantly into a coma and was transported to a hospital. Later that night he died. That's when the UCI, Union Cycliste Internationale, made a new rule making all riders wear a helmet. Stage 3 of the 2008 Paris-Nice was passing through the same town he had crashed in.

The tour officials dedicated an intermediate sprint in Andrei's memory. Kjell Carlström of Liquigas went on to win the stage. Sylvain Chavanel would take the overall lead from Thor Hushovd. Sylvain rode for Cofidis.
