Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Novak Djokovic ended the year ranked number one in the world. However, which of these achievements did the Serbian fail to achieve in the 2018 season?

Answer: Most tournament wins

Djokovic had missed the last five months of the 2017 season after losing at Wimbledon. While his return to form was not immediate (i.e like Roger Federer in 2017) Djokovic moved from a ranking of 22 to eventually finishing the year ranked number one. As a result, he won the Comeback award.

Djokovic earned the most prizemoney as a result of his ventures in 2018 on the ATP. He reached seven finals, a record he tied with Federer. He won at Wimbledon, the Cincinnati Masters, the US Open and the Shanghai Masters while losing the finals of the Queen's Club Championships, Paris Masters and ATP Finals. As a result, Djokovic ended the year with four titles, just shy of Rafael Nadal's five titles.
2. Rafael Nadal ended the year ranked as the world number two. Which of these achievements did the Spaniard accomplish in 2018?

Answer: Best winning percentage of his career

Nadal compiled a 45-4 record in 2018, a win percentage of 91.83%. This included just one loss on Rafa's beloved clay, a quarter-final loss to Dominic Thiem in Madrid.

Nadal had a consistent season at the majors, but despite winning the French Open and reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon and the US Open, the Spnaniard lost in the quarter-finals at the Australian Open to Marin Cilic. While he did win the best grand slam match of the year, a five set classic with Thiem in the quarter-finals of the US Open, the best match on the ATP Tour, as voted for, was Novak Djokovic's dramatic win over Roger Federer in the Paris Masters. Nadal did not face Federer in 2018.
3. Year-end number three Roger Federer had an incredible start to his 2018 season, putting together a personal best 17-0 record. Which year had seen Federer's previous best start?

Answer: 2006

Federer's winning streak saw him win all seven of his matches at the Australian Open, all five of his matches at the Rotterdam Open and five at the Indian Wells Masters. The streak ended after he lost the Indian Wells final to Juan Martin Del Potro.

Federer had a 16-0 start to the 2006 season, winning the Qatar Open and the Australian Open early in the year. His streak in 2006 ended with a loss in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships to Rafael Nadal.
4. For a second consecutive year, Alexander Zverev finished the year ranked fourth in the ATP Rankings. His highlight of the year was winning the year-end finals in London, becoming the first player to win the tournament aside from Djokovic, Federer or Andy Murray since whom?

Answer: Grigor Dimitrov

Dimitrov had been the most recent ATP Finals winner outside of that group before Zverev's 2018 success, winning the previous year's edition of the tournament. Davydenko won the event in 2009. Tsonga was runner-up at the event in 2011. Roddick never featured in the final of the tournament.

Zverev defeated five-time champion Djokovic in straight sets in the final to win the 2018 ATP Finals.
5. Juan Martin Del Potro ended the year ranked fifth in the ATP rankings. He quite famously won the Indian Wells Masters in 2018, but which other tournament did DelPo win that year?

Answer: Mexican Open

Del Potro had a stellar week on Acapulco's hard courts, including victories against Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Kevin Anderson. DelPo was runner up in Auckland and the China Open in Beijing, losing out to Roberto Bautista Agut in Auckland and to Nikoloz Basliashvili in China.

He was much less successful in Delray Beach, losing in the second round to home favourite Frances Tiafoe.
6. Kevin Anderson ended 2018 in sixth. Anderson won two titles in 2018, winning titles in New York City and Vienna. Which player did he beat in both tournaments?

Answer: Kei Nishikori

Querrey was Anderson's opponent in the final in New York, with Anderson defeating the American in a third set tie breaker. Verdasco and Coric were Anderson's semi-final and quarter-final opponents in Vienna respectively.
7. 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic came in seventh. Arguably, Cilic's best moment of the year came at the Queen's Club Championship when he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final. It was only his second win against the Serb. At which form of tournament did Cilic's other win against Djokovic come?

Answer: Masters 1000

Upon the conclusion of the 2018 season, Cilic had only won two of his 18 meetings with the Serbian. Before the win at Queen's, Cilic's only win against Djokovic came at the 2016 Paris Masters tournament, which forms part of the Masters 1000 series. Cilic won the final at Queen's via a 5-7 7-6 6-3 scoreline, saving championship point in the second set.
8. Dominic Thiem finished 2018 ranked eighth. At which grand slam did Thiem recover from two sets down to win, in two consecutive matches?

Answer: Australian Open

Thiem had a rocky road at the 2018 Australian Open. In his first two matches, he was forced to recover from two set deficits. This first occurred against Guido Pella and then against Denis Kudla. After a more comfortable victory against Adrian Mannarino in the third round, the Austrian was eliminated by aptly-named Tennys Sandgren in the round of 16.
9. Year-end world number nine Kei Nishikori surprisingly reached the final of the Monte Carlo Masters, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. What was Nishikori's record in Masters 1000 finals after the loss in Monte Carlo?

Answer: 0-4

10. American ace machine John Isner rounded off 2018's top 10. He won two championships in 2018, what did they have in common?

Answer: Both tournaments were held in the USA

In April, Isner won the first Masters 1000 title of his career at the Miami Open, coming from a set behind to defeat Alexander Zverev in the final. Three months later on the hard courts of Atlanta, Isner defeated compatriot Ryan Harrison, again from a set down in the final. While Isner was ranked below Zverev in Miami, he was the top seed in Atlanta.
11. Russian prospect Karen Khachanov ended the year in eleventh. 2018 was a breakout year for the young player, but which of these milestones did he fail to reach?

Answer: First grand slam quarter final

Khachanov came close to reaching his first major tournament quarter-final at the 2018 French Open. However, he lost in the last 16 in a five set thriller against Alexander Zverev. He also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, where he was dispatched in straight sets by Novak Djokovic.

Khachanov won the 2018 Paris Masters, his first Masters 1000 title. He defeated Djokovic in straight sets in the final. He also won the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, defeating Adrian Mannarino in the title game. In the Davis Cup, he won both of his singles matches against Belarus to propel his home nation to the World Group.
12. Perhaps the highlight of world number twelve Borna Coric's season was helping Croatia to win the 2018 Davis Cup. In the final against France, which player did Coric defeat to help his country bring home the trophy?

Answer: Jeremy Chardy

With Coric and Marin Cilic, Croatia defeated France 3-1 in the final. In the first rubber, Coric defeated Chardy 6-2 7-5 6-4. Coric would have played Tsonga in the fifth rubber had it needed to be played. Coric had a genuinely great tournament, winning five of his six singles matches.

This included winning both of his rubbers against the USA in the semi-finals against Steve Johnson and Frances Tiafoe.
13. World number thirteen Fabio Fognini had arguably the best year of his career in 2018. He reached the final of four events, winning three of them. Which of these tournaments did the Italian lose the final of?

Answer: Chengdu Open

Fognini came into the final of the Chengdu Open as the favourite to defeat Bernard Tomic but despite having four championship points, he lost in a third set tie-breaker.

The Italian was champion of the other three events, winning the Brasil Open and Swedish Open on clay and the Los Cabos Open on hard court. In Brazil, he defeated Nicolas Jarry in three sets in the final. In Sweden, he defeated Richard Gasquet in three sets. His most impressive final victory came in Mexico, where he defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets.
14. 2018 was a huge year for Britain's Kyle Edmund, finishing 14th in the ATP rankings. He also became Britain's number one player during that year. In which month did he overtake Andy Murray in the ATP rankings?

Answer: March

Edmund replaced Murray as Britain's number one on 5 March 2018, ending a twelve year run for Murray as the country's primary player. At the moment he overtook him, Edmund was ranked 24th in the ATP rankings while Murray, who had not played since Wimbledon 2017, fell to 29th.
15. 20 year old starlet Stefanos Tsitsipas emerged in 2018, ending the year ranked in 15th and winning the ATP's Most Improved Player award. He also won the Next Gen Finals, competed for by the game's best youngsters. Who did he beat in the final of the tournament?

Rublev was Tsitsipas' semi-final opponent, with the Greek winning a final set tiebreaker against the Russian. Tsitsipas beat Tiafoe in the group stages in straight sets. Chung did not participate in the event as he was 22 at the time, with the tournament only open to players aged 21 or under. He won the 2017 instalment of the tournament.
16. Daniil Medvedev emerged amongst the ATP's best in 2018, ending the year ranked 16th. A highlight of his year was winning the Japan Open in October. What was special about Medvedev's win in Tokyo?

Answer: He was a qualifier at the tournament

Medvedev was not ranked high enough to qualify for the tournament, but after winning the tournament he was ranked 22nd in the ATP Rankings. Medvedev defeated one home player in the tournament, crushing Kei Nishikori in the final.

The top two seeds, Marin Cilic and Kevin Anderson, were both eliminated before they could face Medvedev. The highest seed he faced was #3 Nishikori. Medvedev did not lose a single set in the entire tournament.
17. Diego Schwartzman ended the year ranked 17th. Which of these firsts did Schwartzman achieve in 2018?

Answer: First top 20 finish

2018, as previously mentioned, saw Schwartzman end the year ranked in 17th in the ATP rankings. His previous best finish had been 26, which he achieved in 2017. While he did win an ATP title in Rio in 2018, his first ATP title came in Istanbul in 2016.

Schwartzman did make it to the French Open quarter finals, but his first appearance at a grand slam quarter final came at the 2017 US Open. Schwartzman reached his first Masters semi-final in 2019 at the Italian Open.
18. Canadian player Milos Raonic found his way back into the top 20 in 2018. In which tournament did he reach the final?

Answer: Stuttgart Open

Raonic had an impressive run in Stuttgart, defeating Tomas Berdych and 2017 champion Lucas Pouille before eventually losing to top seed Roger Federer in the final. It was Raonic's first final on the ATP Tour since May 2017.

Raonic played well in Miami too, but was defeated in the quarter-finals by Juan Martin Del Potro. He was fourth seed in Brisbane but lost to Alex de Minaur in the second round. He didn't compete in Washington's Citi Open in 2018, although he was champion of the event in 2014.
19. Grigor Dimitrov ended 2018 ranked 19th, a world away from his top 3 finish in the 2017 ATP rankings. A part of the Bulgarian's struggle was his inability to perform at grand slams. What was Dimitrov's record in matches at majors in 2018?

Answer: 6-4

Dimitrov got off to a good start in 2018 at the Australian Open, defeating Dennis Novak, Michael McDonald, Andrey Rublev and Nick Kyrgios before a shock quarter-final loss to Kyle Edmund. At the French Open, he cruised past Mohamed Safwat before winning a five set epic against Jared Donaldson, which would ultimately be his last grand slam win in 2018.

He lost to Verdasco in round three. At both Wimbledon and the US Open he lost to Stan Wawrinka in the first round, winning just one set in the two matches combined.
20. Rounding off the top 20 was Italy's Marco Cecchinato, who shook the tennis world when he reached the semi-finals of the 2018 French Open.
