1. What year did Aussie Rules become known as Australian Football League (AFL)?

Answer: 1990

Due to its national expansion into South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland it was decided to rename the league. The plan was to establish a team in every Australian state.
2. What was the AFL known as prior to 1990?

Answer: VFL (Victorian Football League)

Australian Rules was first established in the state of Victoria, hence it was called the VFL. With expansion into other states around Australia it was decided to change its name.
3. What was the inaugural year of the VFL?

Answer: 1897

The first official season was in 1897. Prior to this several teams played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) which was established in 1877.
4. Who were the first VFL champions?

Answer: Essendon

They won in a round robin finals competition which was scrapped the following year. Geelong finished second (although they finished on top of the ladder after the home and away season), Collingwood finished third and Melbourne finished 4th.
5. Who is the oldest team in the AFL?

Answer: Melbourne

Melbourne was established in 1858. Geelong was established in 1859. Collingwood was established in 1892. Carlton was established in 1864.
All these teams were part of the inaugural VFL season in 1897.
6. What was the name of the team that played in the AFL/VFL for only seven seasons?

Answer: University

University only played seven seasons from 1908 to 1914. They were actually named Melbourne University Football Club but were known as University. It was founded in 1859 by Melbourne University students and graduates. They disbanded as they were the only non-professional club in the league and could not remain viable as a club.
7. What team was part of the first season of VFL in 1897 but merged with another club in 1996?

Answer: Fitzroy

Fitzroy was one of the most successful team in the first half of the 20th Century, winning eight premierships. During the 90's they struggled financially and were close to merging with other struggling clubs - Footscray and North Melbourne.
8. What were the Brisbane Lions known as before they were merged with Fitzroy in 1996?

Answer: Brisbane Bears

When the Brisbane Lions entered the VFL in 1987 they were known as the Brisbane Bears. Their team colours were maroon and gold and they had a koala as it's mascot. During the 10 years as the Brisbane Bears they lost millions of dollars annually, which resulted in the decision to merge with Fitzroy in 1996 and the merged club became known as the Brisbane Lions.
9. Which was the first team to win ten premierships?

Answer: Collingwood

Collingwood won their 10th premiership in 1935.
Essendon won their 10th in 1950.
Melbourne won their 10th in 1959.
Carlton won their 10th in 1970.
10. Who won the first Brownlow Medal?

Answer: Edward Greeves Jr (Geelong)

Edward "Carji" Greeves Jr won the first Brownlow medal with seven votes in 1924.
Syd Coventry won the Brownlow medal in 1927.
Charles Brownlow was a former Geelong footballer who was the VFL president between 1918-1919 and died in 1924. The Brownlow medal is named after him.
George Shorten was second to Edward Greeves in 1924 with six votes.
