Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What golfer, who won the 1995 US Open, has the nickname "Bulldog?"

Answer: Corey Pavin

Pavin's nickname refers to his tenacity on the golf course. He has a reputation of fierce determination and never giving up. After his 1995 victory, his game took a downturn, and he played 242 back-to-back tournaments without a victory. But Bulldog persevered and broke the streak by winning the US Bank Championship in Milwaukee in 2006.
2. Which golfer from Argentina, who won the U.S. Senior Open in 2008, is called "El Gato"?

Answer: Eduardo Romero

Romero's nickname is Spanish for "the Cat." He is known for stalking around like a big cat when checking out his shots. Hailing from Cordoba, Argentina, he has won over 75 Latin American tournaments. His first victory as a senior came in 2005 at the European Seniors Tour's Travis Perkins Senior Masters.
3. American golfer Jack Nicklaus is well known by what animal nickname?

Answer: The Golden Bear

One would think that Nicklaus's build and hair color would have earned him this nickname, but that isn't the case. He attended the Upper Arlington High School in Ohio, and "The Golden Bears" was the name of their athletic teams. Nicklaus also attended college in Ohio, and the nickname just stayed with him.
4. What South African golfer is known by the nickname "The Iceman?"

Answer: Retief Goosen

Goosen's ability of not giving into pressure has earned him "The Iceman" nickname. He's known for keeping his cool when the game becomes tense. He also has another nickname "The Goose" which comes from the spelling of his last name. The Afrikaans name "Goosen" is actually pronounced "Hersen." Two of Goosen's forty-plus wins include the US Open in 2001 and 2004.
5. Australia golfer Greg Norman's style of play, among other things, has helped to earn him what nickname?

Answer: Great White Shark

Norman says his nickname came in 1981 when he had the lead in The Masters Tournament and caught the attention of the media who began asking questions about him. His blonde hair, aggressive game, and a history of diving with sharks resulted in "Great White Shark" being used in reports about him. Norman owns the rights to the shark logo which was developed in the late 1980s.
6. Which legendary American golfer has been called "The Hawk?"

Answer: Ben Hogan

Hogan has been described as having the ability to intimidate other players with his "stony silence." Other sources mention his hawk-like habit of scoping out the course and then using his "precision attack" to outplay opponents. Hogan, who died in 1997, left a winning legacy for future golfers including his winning all four professional major championships - the Masters, the British Open, the US Open, and the PGA Championship.
7. Which Swedish golfer's style of dress is responsible for his nickname "The Pink Panther?"

Answer: Jesper Parnevik

Parnevik's style of clothing has been described as both "eccentric" and "eclectic." His frequent sporting of shades of pink earned him the nickname. He's also been known to wear disco-style purple pants and a necktie under his vest. He has even made outfit changes during a tournament. Parnevik has had to recover from hip and back surgeries, and in 2012 injured his hand in a boating accident.

He has had wins both on the European and PGA tours.
8. American golfer Craig Stadler's appearance has earned him what nickname?

Answer: The Walrus

One look at Stadler and you will see why he's called Walrus. He has a bulky physique, prominent jowls, and a drooping mustache. Stadler has several PGA Tour and Champions Tour wins to his credit. Stadler was introduced to golf at age four by his father.
9. Australian golfer Gavin Coles's behavior on the course has resulted in his being nicknamed "The Angry _____?"

Answer: Ant

Coles's nickname was given to him by fellow Australian golfer Peter Lonard. Lonard was referring to Coles's inability to rein in his temper when his game is not going well. According to his PGA profile, Coles height is 5'5" and his weight is 160 pounds, both of which could be responsible for the "ant" part of his nickname. Coles turned professional in 1992.
10. Which golfer from Argentina has been given "El Pato" (the Duck) as a nickname?

Answer: Angel Cabrera

Cabrera is from Cordoba, Argentina and turned professional in 1989. His characteristic walk, described as a " waddling gait," is the reason for his nickname. Cabrera's victories at the US Open in 2007 and the Masters in 2009 made him the first Argentine golfer to win in either of these competitions. Cabrera has said that if he hadn't become a golfer, he would have been a soccer player.
