Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Team that won the premiership in 2022

Answer: Geelong

Geelong have had a good century - up until and including 2022, they have won the Premiership four times. Prior to that, their last win was in 1963. The leading goalkicker for 2022 was Tom Hawkins with 67 goals. Geelong FC annually awards its best and fairest player the Edward "Carji" Greeves meal, named for the inaugural winner of the AFL's Brownlow medal.

The Geelong Football Club was formed in 1859 and is the second oldest club in the AFL after Melbourne. Their nickname is the Cats and their team songs is 'We are Geelong', sung to the tune of Carmen's Toreador by Bizet.
2. Winner of the Coleman Medal in 2022

Answer: Charlie Curnow

The Coleman Medal is given annually to the Australian Football League (AFL) player who kicks the most goals in the home-and-away season. Charlie Curnow, playing for the Carlton Football Club, kicked 64 goals in 2022.

The medal was first awarded in 1981 and is named for one the game's most prolific scorers, John Coleman, who played as a full-forward for the Essendon FC. The AFL also awarded the medal retrospectively to leading goal kickers over the history of the game, the 'first' being Geelong player Eddie James for his feats in 1897, the game's inaugural season.
3. Team that recorded its longest winless start to an AFL season

Answer: Port Adelaide

Port Adelaide 'achieved' this ignominious record by losing all of its first five games of the 2022 season. To be fair, one of them was by 3 points (against Carlton) and another by 4 points against the Adelaide Crows. But...it was still a nasty streak of losses. To mix sporting terms, they broke their duck by beating West Coast by 84 points, but nearly succumbed to St Kilda the very next game, winning by the narrowest of margins (yes, 1 point!). They finished 11th on the ladder at the end of the home and away season.

The team started life as a member of the South Australian National Football League in 1870 and is the fifth oldest team in the AFL contest. They have won only one premiership as part of the AFL competition, in 2004.
4. Player who won the Brownlow Medal

Answer: Patrick Cripps

The Brownlow Medal is the highest individual honour in the AFL competition and is awarded to the best and fairest player. It was first awarded to Edward Greeves Jr. in 1924. Each round the umpires of the various games in the round individually award 3-2-1 votes on the player they consider the best on ground; any player suspended during the season is no longer in the running for the award as they are considered as ineligible the achieve the 'fairest' component.

Carlton player Patrick Cripps is one of the most decorated players on the competition, having won the Leigh Matthews Trophy in 2019, an award given by the players themselves. Apart from being awarded the Brownlow Medal in 2022, he is a three-time 'All-Australian' player, and has won John Nicholls Medal (awarded by the Carlton Football club) four times.
5. Adelaide Crow's Malcolm Blight Medal winner

Answer: Rory Laird

Rory Laird is a midfielder who joined the Crows in 2011 with pick 5 in the Rookie Draft. In 2022, he scored 25 goals and 32 behinds. The Malcolm Blight Medal is named for the Crows' former coach and was inaugurated in 1991. It is given to the best and fairest player for the Adelaide Football Club.
6. Team that won a record eleven games by margins less than two goals

Answer: Collingwood

Founded in 1892, Collingwood is one of the oldest clubs in the competition and has had its share of ups and downs over the years. The last time they won a premiership was in 2010.

In 2022, several teams thought they had a win in the bag, only to be beaten out by Collingwood in the dying minutes of the game - twice beating arch-rivals Carlton in this way. They reached the elimination finals achieving 6th on the ladder.
7. In Round 7, the team that suffered a 109 points loss, its worst ever against Richmond

Answer: West Coast

2022 was not kind to West Coast. They ended up 2nd from the bottom of the ladder, winning only 2 of their 22 games. In the Round 7 game against Richmond, they scored 8 goals 8 points (56 points in total) to a runaway Richmond side, who scored 25 goals 15 points (165 points) at Melbourne's Optus Stadium. For the 2022 season, Josh Kennedy was their highest goal kicker, with 16 goals.

West Coast have won four premierships, the first in 1992, just six years after their inauguration.
8. Sydney player who became only the 6th player in VFL/AFL history to kick 1,000 career goals

Answer: Lance Franklin

Lance 'Buddy' Franklin is a true superstar of the game. He has won four Coleman Medals for the highest goal kicker in a given season. He has played a total of 341 games to reach the milestone of 1,000 goals; by the end of the 2022 season, he had kicked a career total of 1047 goals.

His highest number of goals in a single season came in 2008 as part of the Hawthorn FC, when Franklin kicked 113 goals.
9. Team for which Dyson Heppell was captain for a 6th year

Answer: Essendon

Heppell was a long-term fan of the Essendon Bombers as a child, so was thrilled to be drafted by the team in 2010. He was awarded the AFL Ron Evans 'Rising Star' medal in 2011, and was a major contributor in Essendon's improved ranking. In 2017 he was named captain of the Essendon side and maintained that role into the 2022 season.
10. Team that was the 'winner' of the wooden spoon for 2022

Answer: North Melbourne

North Melbourne followed up winning the wooden spoon in 2021 with winning it in 2022, boasting a win/loss ration of 2:20. A series of bad results saw five coaches appointed in four years. Nonetheless, the North Melbourne side over the years has had some of the biggest names in football associated with it, and during its 'golden' eras in the 1970s and 1900s, they won four premierships and were runners-up five times. Malcolm Blight, after whom the titular medal is awarded, was both player and coach of the team in the 1970s.
