Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first ballpark to host a Ladies' Day?

Answer: Polo Grounds

Tuesday June 16, 1883 -- the New York Gothams beat the Cleveland Spiders 5-2 at the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan NY.
2. Who supposedly said when he met the Pope during World War II, "Your Holiness, I'm __________ ______________. I too used to be a cardinal"?

Answer: Joe Medwick

Only Dean and Medwick were former Cardinals at that time. Dizzy probably would have said that too if he'd had the chance.
3. There were pitchers with the last name of Dean and all the following nicknames during the 19th and 20th centuries: Dizzy, Daffy, Chubby, and Dory.

Answer: True

Dizzy's first name was Jerome. He was with the Cards from 1930 to 37, Cubs from 38 to 41, and Browns in 1947. He had a record of 150 and 83. Daffy's name was Paul. Cards 1934 to 39, Giants 40 to 41, Browns 43. Record 50 and 34. Chubby was Alfred. Philadelphia A's 37 to 41, Indians 41 to 43. Record 30 and 46. Dory was Charles. Reds 1876. Record 4 and 26. What a season!
4. Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks star Dave DeBusschere also played in the major leagues. What team did he play for?

Answer: White Sox

Dave D. pitched for the White Sox in 1962 and 63 with a record of 3 and 4 before he decided to devote all his time to hoops.
5. In which of the following states, did Ted Williams play minor league baseball?

Answer: Minnesota

Williams played for the Minneapolis Millers in 1938. Then on to the Bosox where he debuted on 4/20/39.
6. What seemingly unbreakable record was set by a player nicknamed the Dutch Master?

Answer: pitching two straight no-hitters

Johnny Vander Meer of the Reds threw two consecutive no-hitters in 1938, on the road, no less, in Boston and Brooklyn. You'd have to throw 3 straight to break that record. Not likely to be done.
7. When Ruth played with the Yankees in 1921, he wore uniform number 3.

Answer: False

The Yankees didn't have numbers yet. In fact, neither did anybody else in the majors.
8. Franklin P. Adams' poem "Baseball's Sad Lexicon" is about players with what team?

Answer: Cubs

The repeated phrase is "Tinker to Evers to Chance." They were the immortal double-play combination for the Cubs in the early part of the 20th century.
9. Fenway Park and Tiger Stadium (called Navin Field at the time) opened the same day, about a week after a famous event. What was the event?

Answer: the sinking of the Titanic

The fabled ship hit the iceberg on April 14, 1912, and sank the 15th. The ballyards opened April 20, 1912.
10. What ballpark is located next to the site of two World's Fairs?

Answer: Shea Stadium

The World's Fairs of 1938-39 and 1964-65 were held at Flushing Meadow Park (NOT Flushing Meadows, no matter what the tennis broadcasters might say) in the NYC borough of Queens. The park was built on landfill that covered the old Flushing dump. After I saw the first game ever at Shea, on April 15, 1964, I walked out behind the stands and looked at the wondrous 1964-65 World's Fair that opened just a week later.
