Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 21-season pitcher Hoyt Wilhelm threw one no-hitter in his great career in 1958. Which team did he play for when he threw the blanks?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

None of the other teams existed in 1958. After appearing in 30 games for the Indians in 1958, Cleveland traded Hoyt to the Orioles. He appeared in nine games for Baltimore in the season, went 1-3, and that one victory was his no-hitter against the Yankees.
2. Which of the following brother combinations set a record for most career hits combined?

Answer: Paul and Lloyd Waner

None of the other trios existed in Major League baseball. The Waner's of the Pittsburgh Pirate family were the first brother combination to reach the 5000 career hit mark, both retiring with 5611 hits combined. The second brother combination to reach the 5000 mark were the Alou's, Felipe, Matty, and Jesus, who combined for 5094 career hits.
3. Who was the first American League pitcher to win a Cy Young Award in 1958?

Answer: Bob Turley

The others retired well before the Cy Young award came out in 1956. The first American League pitcher to win it was Turley, who threw a 21-7 record for the Yankees in 1958. The first two winners were Don Newcombe and Warren Spahn, both of the National League.
4. Who was the first pitcher in history to hit a grand slam in his first National League at-bat in 1898?

Answer: Bill Duggleby

The others would not appear in the Majors for another 30 years. Amazingly, Duggleby was a pitcher and was in his rookie season. This Philadelphia Phillie provided the shot on April 21, 1898. Although he threw a 3-3 record, in 21 at-bats he had five hits with three singles, a double, and the grand salami. His next season, Duggleby went 20-12 with his ERA at 2.88.
5. Which of the following had four hits in his Major League debut in 1912?

Answer: Casey Stengel

1912 was long before the debut of the others. Casey did it in July of 1912 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Was this the 'Mighty Casey at Bat' that everyone refers too? Casey played for 14 seasons, then managed for 21 seasons, retiring in 1965. As a manager, he went to 10 World Series and won seven.
6. Which shutout king set a record for being shutout himself 10 times in a season in 1909?

Answer: Walter Johnson

The others did not debut in the Major Leagues for another 50 years. Johnson, the shutout king himself with 110 career shutouts, lost 10 games to shutouts in the 1909 season. Five of those losses were to the White Sox. Johnson went 13-25 in the season, his third, then went 25-17 in 1910 to start his run.
7. Which American Leaguer set a record for hitting 13 lead-off game home runs in the 2003 season?

Answer: Alfonso Soriano

None of the others listed played ball in 2003. Soriano set the record while wearing the pinstripes of the New York Yankees. Alfonso hit a total of 38 home runs in his fifth season.
8. Who was the first black player in the Majors to reach 3000 career hits in 1970?

Answer: Willie Mays

The others retired more than 10 years earlier. Mays was in his 19th season of baseball with the Giants at the age of 39. In 1970, he reached the milestone just ahead of Hank Aaron. In mid-season 1972, the world was shocked when he was traded to the Mets. Willie retired after the 1973 season with 3283 career hits. Aaron retired with 3771 hits in 1976.
9. In 1985, two pitchers reached the 300-game plateau in wins. Who were they?

Answer: Tom Seaver and Phil Niekro

Joe Morgan and Glenn Beckert were both second basemen and retired. Seaver of the White Sox beat the Yankees on August 4th for his 300th. Ironically, Rod Carew of the Angels obtained his 3000th hit on the same day. Phil of the Niekro brothers, notched his 300th on October 6th for the Yankees by defeating the Blue Jays. Koufax retired in his prime with 165 wins, and Perry reached the 300 marker in 1982 with Seattle.
10. By their win-loss record, which team was considered the worst team in baseball history?

Answer: 1899 Cleveland Spiders

The other teams all won over 100 games in their stellar seasons. After going 81-68 the previous season with an all-star cast, the Spiders split up after the 1898 season and most players moved over to the St. Louis Perfectos (later Cardinals), including their starting line-up and the great Cy Young.

The result was the 1899 Spiders finishing the season with a 20-134, 84.0 games behind the league-winning Brooklyn Superbas. The Dodgers won 102 in 1974, the 1927 Yankees won 110 games, and the Cubs won 116 in 1906.
