Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What player set a record in 1912, by stealing 6 bases in one game, twice?

Answer: Eddie Collins

The others were not around in baseball for at least another 40 years. Collins actually did this 2 times, 11 days apart. His first was on September 11, then followed it up on September 22. This Philadephia Athletic stole only 63 bases the entire season.
2. Which of the following players, has walked over 2000 times in their career?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

It only seems logical, that Rickey who played his 25th season of baseball in 2003, was the one who topped this list. In the 20th century, only 3 have reached this milestone. Henderson, Babe Ruth, and Ted Williams.
3. What American League third baseman, set a batting record for hitting .390 in a season?

Answer: George Brett

The others never played 3rd base. Brett did this with the Kansas City Royals in 1980. Brett won the AL MVP for his efforts. He hit over .300 eleven times in his 21 season career, all as a Royal.
4. What Pittsburgh pitcher in 1959, went 18-1 for the season?

Answer: Roy Face

The others never played for the Pirates. Face was 17-0 at one point in 1959, before finishing 18-1. Unforunately, he still finished 7th in season MVP voting behind Cub winner Ernie Banks. The Pirates finished with a 78-76 record, good enough for 4th place in the National League.
5. Which of the following pitchers, won their 300th game in 1986?

Answer: Don Sutton

The others retired well before 1986, and none had won 300 career games. Sutton with the Angels in '86, would play 2 more seasons and retire with his 'home team', Los Angeles Dodgers in 1988, with 324 wins.
6. Which of the following pitchers, debuted in the Major Leagues at the age of 14 in 1887?

Answer: Fred Chapman

The others weren't around for almost 100 years in baseball, and never pitched. Chapman appeared in his only career game, on July 22 for the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association. He pitched 5 innings, allowed 8 hits, and struck out 4 in his no-decision game.
7. What daring pitcher stole home in 2001?

Answer: Darren Dreifort

The others were all pitchers, but quit the game over 30 years earlier. Dreifort of the "keep 'em guessing" Dodgers, did this on June 12. He stole only 2 bases in his entire career, the first being in 1999.
8. What team won the 1966 World Series?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The Dodgers were there, but got skunked by the Orioles 4 games to 0.
9. What New York player in 2001, set a record for pinch hitting 88 times in the season?

Answer: Lenny Harris

The others hadn't played for almost 30 years. Harris' pinch hit plate appearances of 88, were more than half of his season total of 135. Coming off the bench cold, he still batted .222 for the Mets. In 2003, Harris was in his 16th season in the Majors.
10. Eddie Gaedel was a 3'7" midget, who appeared in only one baseball game in 1951. Who hired him to play in that game?

Answer: Bill Veeck

Owner Bill Veeck hired Gaedel to pinch hit for the St.Louis Browns. Gaedel did draw a walk. The first short legitimate player that became a star, was Dummy Hoy who stood at 5'4". Hoy played for 14 seasons, mostly with the Reds.
