Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who came across home plate to score Major League Baseball's one millionth home run in the 1970s?

Answer: Bob Watson

It was the fourth day of the 1975 season at Candlestick Park with the Giants hosting the Astros. The first baseman Watson took the honors on May 4th when he scored after catcher Milt May hit a three-run second inning home run off pitcher John Montefusco. The first baseman received a new car for his endeavors, but the Giants still won the game 8-6.

2. Some Hall of Fame members who were inducted all by themselves in their year of induction include Zack Wheat, Pud Galvin, Willie Stargell, then Reggie Jackson in 1993. Who was the next Hall of Fame inductee that was immortalized all by himself?

Answer: Ozzie Smith

Carlton was inducted in 1994 along with Leo Durocher and Phil Rizzuto. Fox saw induction in 1997 with Phil Niekro, Tom Lasorda, and Willie Wells. Carter was inducted along with Eddie Murray in 2003. Osborne Earl Smith, nicknamed "Wizard of Oz" played in four seasons with the Padres then 15 with the Cardinals. He was the 1987 NL MVP runner-up to Andre Dawson of the Cubs, and won 13 Glove Glove awards as a shortstop.
Pictured was legendary rock star, Ozzy Osbourne.
3. Which of these managers set a record for being the oldest rookie manager?

Answer: Tom Sheehan

Born in 1894, Sheehan pitched from 1915-1926. Tom took over the San Francisco Giants in June 1960 as a rookie manager at the ripe age of 66. It would be the only managerial season of his career. He was replaced by Alvin Dark for the 1961 season. Manuel was 56 years old when he first managed the Indians in 2000. McKeon was only 43 years old when he took over the Royals in 1973. Armour was 32 when he took the helm of the Cleveland Bronchos in 1902.

4. Which American League catcher set two rather weird catching records by committing the most errors in one season, but also setting a record by having the most assists in that same season, with both records standing throughout the century?

Answer: Oscar Stanage

It was a strange 1911 season for Stanage, his fourth in the Majors and third with the Tigers. Committing 41 errors, he also had 212 assists in the season. That same season saw Ty Cobb win the first-ever AL MVP Award with the Tigers also.

5. Who was the first switch-hitter in Major League history to hit for the cycle?

Answer: Max Carey

Carey of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit for the cycle on June 20, 1925. After 17 seasons with the Pirates, they let him go and he signed with Brooklyn in 1926. The Hall of Famer retired in 1929.

6. Lee Richmond and John Ward threw the National League's first two perfect games in 1880. Who was the next National League pitcher who won a game by throwing a perfecto?

Answer: Jim Bunning

Amazingly, it took another 84 years for the National League to experience their third perfect game. Bunning of the Phillies threw it on June 21, 1964. Ironically after all that wait, Dodger Sandy Koufax would throw another one in the following season.

7. In 1941, Phillies pitcher Hugh Mulcahy became the Major League player drafted for the WWII effort. During the war, there were only two Major League players killed in action. The first was Elmer Gedeon. Who was the other?

Answer: Harry O'Neill

O'Neill played in only one Major League game in 1939, was under contract with the Philadelphia Athletics, and was scheduled to be their starting catcher for the 1940 season. Instead, he voluntarily joined the military who needed his services, but he would never return from the war. He was killed on March 6, 1945 at Iwo Jima.
Pictured was NBA star, Shaquille O'Neal.
8. In 1915, what rule did the National League initiate for all NL teams?

Answer: That all home teams had to have covers for the field in the event of rain

Due to the long rain delays, the league ruled that every home team had to have a canvas cover or tarp for all areas of the field. It wasn't the fact that the game was delayed for the rain itself, but the wood chips and oil that was put down afterward to help soak up the water was creating more of a delay to clean up.
Pictured were some people wearing a poncho cover to stay out of the rain.
9. Which combination of baseball brothers retired with the most combined total hits?

Answer: Paul and Lloyd Waner

Paul and Lloyd Waner played most of their careers for the Pirates, and shared the outfield together for many seasons. With Paul's 3152 hits along with Lloyd's 2459, they became the first family combination to have over 5000 combined career hits. The three Alou brothers also hit the 5000-mark within the 1960s/1970s. The DiMaggio's had 4853 total, and the Delahanty's even with five family members combined for only 4217 career hits.

10. In 1984 when Pete Rose played in his 3309th career game, whose all-time record for most games played did he break?

Answer: Carl Yastrzemski

When Yastrzemski retired with the Red Sox in 1983, he was the fifth player in history to play in 3000 games, behind Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, Hank Aaron and Rose. Pete would go on to play in a total of 3562 games, ranked number one when he retired in 1986.
