The others had all previously retired by 1985. The 46-year old Niekro bagged his 300th victory Yankees against the Blue Jays on October 6, 1985; the last day of the season. He surpassed Satchel Paige who previously set a record in on August 6, 1952 for the oldest to throw a shutout. Paige was only a few months younger than Phil.
2. Which of the following was the oldest 20-game winner in a season in 1963?

Answer: Warren Spahn

Only except for Wilhelm, the others had already retired many years prior, but even still, Wilhelm was a relief pitcher. Spahn was 42 years old with the 1963 Milwaukee Braves when he went 23-7. It was his 13th and final season of winning 20 or more games in a season. He retired in 1965 at the age of 44.
3. Which of the following was the oldest player to win a season batting title?

Answer: Barry Bonds

The others were all pitchers. Barry with the Giants was 40 years old in 2004 when he hit .362. It was Bonds' second batting title, as he won his first in 2002 while batting .370 with the Giants also.
4. Which American Leaguer set a record for being the oldest to hit a home run in a game at age 46 in 1930?

Answer: Jack Quinn

None of the others listed reached the age of 40 while in the Major Leagues, and both Johnson and Mathewson had already retired before 1930. Gehrig was the only one who played in 1930, but retired at age 36 in 1939. Quinn was a Philadelphia Athletics pitcher in 1930 when he set this record at the age of 46.

He also set a record for being the oldest pitcher to get more than one hit in a season in 1932 at age 48. Quinn played for 23 seasons and retired in 1933.
5. Which of the following caught the most games as a catcher after age 40?

Answer: Carlton Fisk

The others listed were all pitchers. Deacon McGuire was the first catcher to catch over 200 games after age 40. He played from 1884-1912, and caught 220 games after turning 40 and retired at age 48 after 26 seasons. Carlton Fisk, who retired at age 45, caught over 400 games after turning 40, all with the White Sox. Fisk was a Hall of Fame inductee in 2000.
6. In 2004, who became the oldest player in history to hit a grand slam?

Answer: Julio Franco

The others had already retired. Franco was in his 20th season and was playing with the Atlanta Braves in 2004. His blast that happened on June 3rd, was one of only six home runs that he hit in the season. Julio was 45 when he hit that shot.
7. Which of the following pitchers set a National League record for being the oldest rookie?

Answer: Diomedes Olivo

The others listed were all less than 20 years old as a rookie. Although he debuted in 1960 with the Pirates, Olivo did not qualify for rookie status due to only pitching in less than 10 innings in the entire season. He came back with Pittsburgh in the 1962 season at the age of 43, went 5-1 and had seven saves in 62 games. He retired after the 1963 season as a St. Louis Cardinal.
8. Who was the first 40-year old to play in the National League?

Answer: Dickey Pearce

The others were all American Leaguers. After playing with the Brooklyn Atlantics, Pearce played for the 1876 St. Louis Brown Stockings near the end of his career. It was the first season for the National League in 1876. Pearce was a shortstop and retired in 1877.
9. Who set a record for being the oldest player in history to get a hit in a regular season game at the age of 53?

Answer: Minnie Minoso

The others were all at least 10 years younger when they retired. On September 12, 1976, Minoso of the Chicago White Sox was the designated-hitter at the age of 53. He went 1-for-8 in the game with only one single. He was the oldest since Nick Altrock who set a record in 1929, just a few months younger than Minoso.
10. How old was Satchel Paige when he recorded his final strikeout in a Major League game?

Answer: 59

After retiring the first time in 1953 at age 46, Paige came out of retirement for a one-game contract on September 12, 1965, to pitch for the Kansas City Athletics.
