Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following had the fewest number of stolen bases in their career?

Answer: Harmon Killebrew

The others listed all had in excess of 700 stolen bases. In 22 seasons, Killebrew of the Twins stole only 19. Almost half of his career total came in 1969 when he stole eight in the season. Brock led the others listed with 938, Raines had 808, and Collins with 744.
2. Which pitcher at one point was 17-0 in 1959?

Answer: Roy Face

1959 was before the others listed. 1959 saw Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher Roy Face throw a 17-0 record before he finally lost a game in the season. He finished the season with a record of 18-1. Face was a reliever and never started a game in the season.
3. Which pitcher was injured in the 1937 all-star game, which was the beginning of the end of his playing career?

Answer: Dizzy Dean

Ruth was the only other pitcher listed, but retired in 1935, and had only pitched in four games between 1921-1933. The Cardinal pitcher Dean, was hit by a line drive in the first inning of this all-star game from Earl Averill of the Indians and broke his toe. Dizzy still continued to pitch but came out of the game in the third inning. Returning from the injury too soon, it caused Dean to hurt his pitching arm while pitching from an altered stance.

He never came back to form again. After winning 20+ games in four consecutive seasons prior, Dean never won more than eight games in a season after the 1937 game.
4. Which league almost became the third Major League in the 1940s?

Answer: Pacific Coast League

The other leagues all went defunct in the 19th century. It almost came about in 1946. Part owner of the San Francisco Seals, Paul Fagan, came up with the idea in 1945 to stop supplying Major League teams with the players from the PCL. He increased the salaries of all the Seal players, flew them first class, stayed at the best hotels, etc.

At the time where it almost came to be, the other team owners backed down, refusing to increase their players' salaries. After the 1946 PCL season, Ferris Fain was sold to the Philadelphia Athletics of the Major Leagues.

He was furious because he was taking a big pay cut with his new team.
5. Which second baseman came down with tuberculosis, helping to prevent his team from winning their league pennant in the 1950s?

Answer: Red Schoendienst

None of the others listed played in the 1950s, and none were second basemen. Schoendienst's coming down with this illness prevented the Milwaukee Braves from winning their third straight NL pennant in 1959. Red played in only five games in the season.

The Braves went through seven second basemen before finally settling on Bobby Avila. The Braves finished two games behind the Dodgers, who went on to win the World Series against the White Sox.
6. Which player stole three bases in one season with two teams, and two of those thefts were stealing home in 1958?

Answer: Vic Power

1958 was too early for the others listed. In 1958, the first baseman Vic Power of Kansas City, stole one base for the Athletics. He was traded mid-season to the Indians where he stole two more, and both were of home. Ironically, his two thefts of home were in the same game.
7. Who set a record by hitting 38 road game home runs in 2001?

Answer: Barry Bonds

The others were long gone from baseball in 2001. Mark McGwire tied Babe Ruth's record of 32 set in 1927, when he hit on the road for the Cardinals in 1998. Bonds hit 38 road games with the Giants in 2001 breaking the record.
8. In the first-ever televised all-star game, which player won it for his league by hitting an extra inning home run in 1950?

Answer: Red Schoendienst

1950 was too early for the other players listed. The first televised all-star game was this one in 1950. Red Schoendienst of the St. Louis Cardinals hit a home run in the top of the 14th inning to win it for the National League, 4-3.
9. Which of the following American League pitchers started both games of a double-header in 1973, and lost both games?

Answer: Wilbur Wood

None of the others were in the big leagues in 1973. On July 20 against the Yankees, Wood of the Chicago White Sox was charged for both losses. He would still pitch a 24-20 record for the season.
10. Who was the first player in history to hit three home runs in one game, and do it in both leagues?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Stargell played his entire career for the Pirates, Yaz for the Red Sox, and Banks was a career Chicago Cub. Babe hit three in one game with the Yankees in 1927. Also in that season, Ruth hit more home runs in the season himself than any other team's total except for his Yankees. Ruth repeated this three-dinger feat in one game in his final season with the Boston Braves of the National League in 1935.
