Answer: Joe DiMaggio

Joe retired with 361 home runs in an amazing only 13 seasons with the Yankees. Sosa topped the mark in the first 2 weeks of the 2003 season. Ott retired with 511, and Murray with 504.
2. What umpire was hospitalized, after being hit in the head by a Pedro Martinez fastball, on April 12, 2003?

Answer: Jerry Layne

None of the others listed have ever umpired baseball. Layne, a veteran since 1978, was hit in the head during the 4th inning of a Red Sox-Oriole game.
3. Which of the following teams did Hideo Nomo begin the 2003 season with?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

After winning the 1995 Rookie of the Year Award with the Dodgers, he has moved around the Big Leagues. He has played for all the teams listed plus the Boston Red Sox in 2001. He came back to the Dodgers for the 2002 season, and has been a positive for the team in 2003.

Johnson and Young were pitchers. 1919 was the Babe's last season with the Boston Red Sox. He hit 29 in that season. The previous season in 1918, Ruth tied for the season lead with Tilly Walker of the Philadelphia Athletics, when they both hit a whopping 11 home runs.

Answer: Washington Senators

Their franchise began in 1901 with the new American League, along with the Tigers of Detroit, Chicago, and numerous others. The Senators only won 1 World Series in their 60 years of existence. In 1924, they defeated the New York Giants 4 games to 3, behind the bats of Goose Goslin, Bucky Harris, and Roger Peckingpaugh. The arms of Walter Johnson and Tom Zachary helped also.
8. What New York Yankee was nicknamed "Scooter"?

Answer: Phil Rizzuto

None of the others listed every played for the Yankees. Rizzuto, the Yankee shortstop won the American League MVP in 1950, and was the MVP runner-up in 1949 also. He went to 9 World Series, winning 7 of them. Phil retired in 1956.

Answer: Tony LaRussa

The Babe never managed, and even still, the others managed before the Manager of the Year Award was presented. Tony won his first, in the inauguration of the award in 1983 with the Chicago White Sox. He doubled that honor with the 1988 Oakland Athletics. 1992 brought him another award with the Athletics. His 4th recognition came with the 2002 St.Louis Cardinals.
10. Which team won the 1945 World Series?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Baltimore and the S.F. Giants did not exist in 1945. The Tigers defeated the Cubs 4 games to 3, behind the bat of Hank Greenberg and the arm of Hal Newhouser. This would be the Cubs' last World Series appearance in the 20th century.
