Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the term 'cellar' refer to?

Answer: A team that is in last place

A team that is in the 'cellar', is not having a good time, and usually has the worst record in the division. In 2002, the Tigers and Tampa Bay finished in the cellar for the season.
2. What does the term 'HR' mean?

Answer: Home Run

'HR' is the scoring term for home run. When a batter hits a home run, this is how it is entered in the official scorebook. Only 2 players in the 20th century hit 700 HRs. They were Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron.
3. 'Chin Music' means what?

Answer: A pitch that almost hits the batter

Chin Music is used more and more as time goes on. Umpires have been trained to deal with this issue, and a pitcher may be ejected after a warning of a Chin Music pitch. Chin music is used normally to set up a batter with an inside pitch, and then throw a pitch on the outside corner of the plate.
4. The term 'the gap' refers to what?

Answer: The space between positioned outfielders

Also known as 'the alley', the gap is where hitters attempt to hit the ball into the outfield, where there are no outfielders present. Usually the ball rolls to the fence, and extra bases are made.
5. What is a 'spitter' referred to?

Answer: A pitch

The infamous spit ball! Gaylord Perry was the master in throwing the spitter.
6. What is a 'pickle' in baseball?

Answer: When a runner is caught in a rundown

A pickle occurs when a runner is caught between bases, and is in a rundown. The runner goes back and forth, back and forth, watching the fielders throwing to each other, in an attempt to tag the runner out.
7. What happened when a player had been 'whiffed'?

Answer: He struck out

This is a term that occurs when a batter has struck out. It has also been referred to as a 'K'. Bobby Bonds was whiffed 189 times in a season, setting a 20th century record.
8. What does the term 'tater' mean?

Answer: Home run

Mark McGwire hit 70 taters in 1999, and Barry Bonds hit 73 in 2001.
9. What is a 'bandbox'?

Answer: A small ballpark that favors the hitters

In early baseball there were many bandboxes. Major League baseball stepped in and regulated the minimum outfield fence measurements, to avoid some teams from having the advantage throughout most of their season.
10. What is a 'rhubarb'?

Answer: A fight between multiple players

A rhubarb is not for the family upbringing. A scuffle is when two players have differences, but a rhubarb is when both benches unload, fight each other, and then the Commissioner levies multiple fines and suspensions. For some reason, the media promotes the replays of these incidents.
