Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If a player takes more than 3 steps before hitting an opponent, which of the following penalties are called?

Answer: Charging

Running is not a penalty. Elbowing is when a player uses their elbow to hit someone. Roughing is generally the penalty for punching someone with the gloves still on.
2. A player can receive more than one game misconduct in a game?

Answer: True

Despite the apparent strangeness of this, a player can receive multiple game misconducts in a game. This is usually because if a player commits more than one foul that results in a game misconduct, they can be suspended.
3. Under international rules, what part of the body are you not allowed to hit?

Answer: Head

It is a rule that's in existence for most professional leagues. In international play it is at least a 10 minute misconduct for hitting an opponent in the head.
4. If a player breaks his stick, what does he have to do?

Answer: Drop it, he may continue to play without a stick.

The broken of a stick will almost always be jagged or sharp-pointed and thus would always be very dangerous in the hurly-burly of a hockey game. It is a 2 minute minor penalty to play with a broken stick. There is no rule about playing without a stick, although it is obviously more difficult. It is a 2 minute minor for "Holding the Stick" should he try and grab an opponents stick.
5. A player can get a penalty for playing with a broken stick.

Answer: True

It is a 2 minute minor penalty.
6. What is the minimum amount of players on the ice at any time for one team, counting the goalie?

Answer: 4

No matter how many players are in the penalty box, a team may always keep a minimum of 4 players on the ice.
7. If one player receives a 2 minute minor, 5 minute major, and 10 minute misconduct on the same play, how long is his team short-handed for (assuming no goals are scored)?

Answer: 7 minutes

If a player receives a 10 minute misconduct, then his team is not shorthanded for any of that 10 minutes. However, a team is shorthanded for 2 and 5 minute penalties. The penalties are served one after the other, and so barring any goals, the offender's team would be short-handed for 7 minutes.
8. Which of the following is NOT a penalty?

Answer: Accidentally dropping a glove

A goalie shooting the puck over the glass is Delay of Game. Punching an opponent if often Roughing, or Fighting. Using your stick to trip an opponent is Tripping.
9. When can player use his hand to make a pass to a teammate?

Answer: in their defensive zone, provided he doesn't throw the puck.

Throwing the puck is a delay of game penalty. A player can bat the puck to a teammate in his own zone if he wants to, but it results in a whistle and faceoff should he try it anywhere else.
10. A goal can be disallowed for which of the following reasons?

Answer: The offensive stick which knocked it in was over the crossbar

A player can score from anywhere on the ice. As long as a player does not intentionally direct the puck in with his body it is okay. If a defensive player hits it in with a high stick it is still a goal.
