Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the UEFA coefficient, which ranks clubs on their performances in European competitions over a period of five years, where did FC Porto rank amongst the 32 Champions League group-stage teams in the 2003-04 season?

Answer: 10th

Porto had a coefficient of 86.791, which was the tenth strongest amongst the teams that qualified for the group stage. As a result of this, Porto were placed into Pot 2, essentially a second seed in the group stage. Porto were one of four teams in Pot 2 to make it out of the 2003-04 Champions League group stages, alongside Celta Vigo, Lyon and Chelsea.

The three highest coefficients in 2003-04 were Real Madrid with 151.769, Manchester United with 136.170 and Bayern Munich with 124.566.
2. How many former European Cup/Champions League winning clubs were placed in Porto's group for the 2003-04 Champions League group stage?

Answer: 2

Porto were placed in Group F alongside (at the time) nine-time European Champions Real Madrid, 1993 Champions League winners Marseille and FK Partizan. Interestingly, Partizan actually lost a European Cup final to Real Madrid in 1966. Porto themselves had decent European pedigree before their 2004 run, winning the 1987 European Cup and the 2003 UEFA Cup.
3. How many clean sheets did FC Porto keep in the group stage?

Answer: 1

It seems rather surprising considering how defensively secure Jose Mourinho's sides tend to be, but Porto conceded eight goals in their six group stage games in the 2003-04 Champions League. In these games, they kept just one clean sheet, winning 1-0 against FK Partizan in their fourth group stage fixture thanks to a Dmitri Alenichev goal.
4. FC Porto defeated Manchester United 2-1 at home in the first leg of their last 16 clash. Who was the unexpected source of United's goal in that game?

Answer: Quinton Fortune

Fortune spent seven years at Manchster United, scoring five times in 76 appearances. His goal gave United a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, before goals in each half from Benni McCarthy gave the Portuguese side a 2-1 advantage.
5. Who was the referee of the iconic second-leg against Manchester United at Old Trafford, in which a last gasp goal sent FC Porto into the quarter-finals?

Answer: Valentin Ivanov

Ivanov was one of UEFA's most highly respected referees at this stage in his career. His reputation was damaged by the "Battle of Nuremburg" at the 2006 World Cup when he gave out 16 yellow cards and four red cards in one single game. Collina did referee at this stage, but instead took charge of the second leg between Arsenal and Celta Vigo. Vassaras had previously refereed a group stage game that year between Marseille and Porto. Batista is Portuguese, so was not eligible to referee the game.

In the game, United looked set to win on away goals thanks to a Paul Scholes goal in the 32nd minute. However, a late equaliser by Costinha saw Mourinho's side progress. Mourinho celebrated with a now iconic but at the time controversial knee slide celebration.
6. Which player scored both of Porto's goals in the second leg of the quarter-finals against Lyon, sealing a 4-2 aggregate victory?

Answer: Maniche

Porto gave themselves a 2-0 cushion in the first leg, thanks to Deco and Ricardo Carvalho goals. The second leg was a 2-2 draw, with Peguy Luyindula and Giovane Elber scoring Lyon's goals while Maniche bagged both of Porto's.

McCarthy did not score in either leg, but did score braces against Partizan and Manchester United earlier in the competition. Derlei scored twice in the group stages, but his winner in the semi-final second leg against Deportivo La Coruna was the most important one.
7. What was the aggregate score of the two-leg semi-final between FC Porto and Deportivo La Coruna?

Answer: 1-0

The semi-final was not an action-packed one, but it was certainly dramatic. The first leg was a 0-0 draw at Porto's Estadio do Dragao stadium, with the deadlock only being broken with half an hour left in the second leg at Deportivo. Derlei's penalty was the game winner, sending Porto to its first European Cup final since 1987.
8. At which German stadium was the 2004 Champions League final between FC Porto and AS Monaco held?

Answer: Arena AufSchalke

The Arena AufSchalke opened in 2001 as the new stadium for Bundesliga club Schalke. The stadium became only the third German stadium to host the European Cup after the Neckarstadion (1959 and 1988) and the Munich Olympiastadion (1979, 1993 and 1997).

The Volksparkstadion has been the home of Hamburger SV since 1953, while the Westfalenstadion has hosted Borussia Dortmund games since 1974. The Commerzbank-Arena, originally known as the Waldstadion, is by far the oldest stadium on this list, opening in 1925. It hosts Eintracht Frankfurt games and also hosted former NFL Europe franchise Frankfurt Galaxy games.
9. FC Porto won the 2004 Champions League final by a 3-0 scoreline. How many of Porto's starting XI in the final were Portuguese players?

Answer: 9

Porto's Portuguese players were goalkeeper Vitor Baia, defenders Paulo Ferreira, Jorge Costa, Ricardo Carvalho, Nuno Valente and midfielders Costinha, Pedro Mendes, Maniche and Deco. The team's only two foreign starters were strikers Carlos Alberto and Derlei. Porto also had four Portuguese substitutes in Nuno Espirito Santo, Ricardo Costa, Jose Bosingwa and Pedro Emanuel.
10. How many of Porto's starting XI from the 2004 final were still at the club a year later, at the beginning of the 2005-06 season?

Answer: 1

Only Vitor Baia was still at the club, staying with Porto until his retirement in 2007.

Ferreira and Carvalho both followed Mourinho to Chelsea in the summer of 2004, while Pedro Mendes also joined the Premier League, signing for Tottenham Hotspur. Deco left for Barcelona, staying with the Catalan club until 2008. Jorge Costa, captain in the 2004 final, left in 2005 to sign for Standard Liege. Nuno Valente joined Everton in the same summer. Costinha joined Dynamo Moscow, as did Maniche and Derlei. Carlos Alberto returned to his homeland, playing for Corinthians between 2005 and 2007.
