Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a unique turn of events, the UEFA coefficient that determined seedings for the Champions League saw Manchester United awarded the exact same score as which other club in 2007-08?

Answer: Chelsea

United had a rating of 99.618, which was tied for seventh alongside their Premier League rivals. Valencia were ranked ninth with 99.374 while Porto had a score of 89.107, only good enough for eleventh. Inter had the fourth best ranking in Europe at the time, with a 107.808 score.

United's modest ranking was likely a result of poor performance in European competition in the previous few years as the club's four previous Champions League campaigns had included two round of 16 exits and a group stage elimination.
2. Which opponent from Man United's 2006-07 Champions League campaign was in their group for the 2007-08 group stages?

Answer: Roma

Roma, United's quarter-final opponents in 2006-07, renewed their rivalry with the Red Devils in the group stages of the 2007-08 competition. The Italian side would have been keen for revenge after United thrashed them 7-1 in the second leg of the 2006-07 quarter-final.

Portuguese side Sporting CP and Ukrainian team Dynamo Kiev completed United's Group F opposition.
3. Aside from Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the only Manchester United player to score two goals or more during the group stages?

Answer: Gerard Pique

While Ronaldo and Rooney were United's biggest attacking outlets, young centre back Pique was a surprise package for United in the group stages. He scored the opening goal in United's 4-0 demolition of Dynamo Kiev in matchday 4 and also scored United's only goal in a 1-1 draw with Roma in the final matchday.

Ferdinand scored the opening goal in United's 4-2 away victory at Dynamo Kiev. The other players mentioned did not score in the group stages.
4. Which of these did Manchester United achieve in the 2007-08 Champions League group stages?

Answer: Most points of any team

Man United were remarkably consistent in the group stages, collecting 16 points in their six games. United's only draw came in the last matchday away at Roma. Sevilla and Inter Milan came closest to United with 15 points.

United scored an impressive 13 goals, but Liverpool had the most with 18. Chelsea's two goals conceded beat United's four goals conceded. While Rooney did score three goals, the top scorers in the group stages of the 2007-08 Champions League were actually United's Cristiano Ronaldo and Inter's Zlatan Ibrahimovic with five goals.
5. Manchester United were uncharacteristically cagey in their round of 16 clash with French giants Lyon. After a 1-1 draw in France, United won the second leg 1-0 with Cristiano Ronaldo pouncing on a blocked shot by which United player?

Answer: Anderson

The first leg of the tie ended 1-1 in Lyon, with Karim Benzema scoring the opener before a late equaliser by Carlos Tevez levelled the score.

In the second leg, United won 1-0. For the goal, Nani played Wes Brown on the right hand side, Brown's cross was met by Brazilian starlet Anderson, whose shot was blocked by the Lyon defence. Ronaldo reacted quickest and slotted the ball home.
6. Which of these players did *NOT* register a goal or an assist in the first leg of Manchester United's quarter-final against Roma?

Answer: Carlos Tevez

United won an entertaining tie 2-0 at Roma's Stadio Olimpico. Ronaldo scored the first goal just before half time, with Scholes delivering a wonderful cross to the box for Ronaldo to head in past goalkeeper Doni.

For the second goal, a seemingly poor cross into the box by Wes Brown was kept in play by Park-Ji Sung and after Doni failed to collect the ball. Rooney then made it 2-0.

United also won the second leg, this time 1-0.
7. Which of these players was an unused substitute in United's 0-0 draw with Barcelona at the Nou Camp in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals?

Answer: Anderson

Anderson had been struggling with injuries and poor form during the quarter-finals against Roma, so it was not a surprise that manager Sir Alex Ferguson decided to give him a rest in a game that featured Xavi and Deco in the opposing midfield.

Often-injured utility man Hargreaves played the full game at right back, and was the only United player to be booked. Park played the full game. Giggs was set to be an unused substitute before replacing Carlos Tevez in the 85th minute.

United scored the only goal of the tie in the second leg, thanks to an incredible strike by Paul Scholes.
8. Manchester United and Chelsea were paired in the final of the 2007-08 Champions League. How many times had the European Cup final previously featured two clubs based in the same country?

Answer: 2

The only previous occurrences of this came in 2000 (Real Madrid vs Valencia) and 2003 (AC Milan vs Juventus). It became a much more common theme in the 2010s, with four such finals. (Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund, 2013; Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid, 2014 and 2016; and Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur, 2019).

The Champions League era (which began in 1992) has allowed for greater occurrence of these games, with as many as five clubs representing a single nation. Only champions of European leagues were allowed entry into the competition before the rebranding of the European Cup.
9. John Terry and Nicolas Anelka missed penalties in the shootout that followed a 1-1 draw in the final. Who scored the penalty that preceded Anelka's crucial miss?

Answer: Ryan Giggs

The shootout went to sudden death, with United and Chelsea scoring four of their first five penalties. After Anderson and Salomon Kalou scored, Giggs made the score 6-5. Anelka's penalty was then saved by Edwin Van Der Sar, sealing United their third European Cup victory.

Hargreaves and Carrick both scored in the shootout, Rooney was substituted for Nani in the 101st minute, with the Portuguese star scoring a vital penalty to keep the tie alive at 4-4 before Terry's infamous miss.
10. With the 2007-08 Champions League won, Sir Alex Ferguson became a two-time European Cup winning manager. How many men had achieved this feat before the Scot?

Answer: 15

Real Madrid's six European Cup victories between 1955 and 1966 saw three different managers win it twice, Jose Villalonga (1956, 1957), Luis Carnliglia (1958, 1959) and Miguel Munoz (1960, 1966). In between, Bela Guttmann won two in 1961 and 1962 with Benfica. Hellenio Herrera led Inter to the 1964 and 1965 cups. Nereo Rocco achieved the same feat with Milan in 1963 and 1969.

The 1970s saw Stefan Kovacs win the 1972 and 1973 cups with Ajax and Dettmar Cramer win in 1975 and 1976 with Bayern Munich. Bob Paisley won with Liverpool in 1977, 1978 and 1981 while Brian Clough won in 1979 and 1980 with Nottingham Forest.

Ernst Happel won with two clubs, Feyenoord in 1970 and Hamburg in 1983. Arrigo Saachi helped Milan win two European Cups in 1989 and 1990. Ottmar Hitzfeld led Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich to the 1997 and 2001 Champions Leagues respectively. Vicente Del Bosque won in 2000 and 2002 with Real Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti won in 2003 and 2007 with Milan.
