Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Barcelona's campaign began in the third qualifying round with Pep Guardiola's side facing off against Polish champions Wisla Krakow. After winning the first leg 4-0, Barca lost the second leg 1-0. Who scored the goal for Wisla?

Answer: Guedes Cleber

Cleber scored in the 52nd minute to give the Polish side a morale boosting second leg victory, although their hopes of progression virtually ended in the first leg.

In the first leg, a Samuel Eto'o double alongside goals from Xavi Hernandez and Thierry Henry sealed the 4-0 victory for the Catalans. It was Guardiola's first game in charge of the club.
2. Barcelona had the third highest UEFA Coefficient score heading into the draw for the 2008-09 Champions League group stage. Which of these clubs had a better coefficient than Barca?

Answer: Liverpool

Chelsea had the highest coefficient with 124.996 while Liverpool placed second with 118.996. Barcelona's 117.837 was enough for third spot, although Manchester United officially held the top rank as a result of winning the 2007-08 edition of the competition. If this rule did not exist United would have had the fifth best score.

Inter's 96.934 was the seventh best of all group stage teams while Real Madrid's 93.837 was only the eighth best. Bayern Munich's score placed them among the second seeds.
3. Who was the first player to score for Barcelona in the 2008-09 Champions League group stage?

Answer: Rafael Marquez

Mexican centre back Marquez scored in the 21st minute of Barca's matchday 1 victory over Sporting CP. Barcelona went on to win the game 3-1. Pique would score in the reverse fixture in matchday 5 when the Catalans defeated Sporting by a 5-2 scoreline. Sylvinho scored in the final group stage matchday in a disappointing 3-2 loss at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.
4. Barcelona's only loss in the group stage of the 2008-09 Champions League came in the final group game. Which future colleague of Pep Guardiola scored the winning goal in that game?

Answer: Fernandinho

It didn't matter too much to the Catalan side as they had already won their group but in their final group game against Shakhtar Donetsk, Barcelona lost 3-2 at the Camp Nou. While Oleksandr Hladkyy scored twice, the decisive third goal was scored by Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho in the 76th minute.

Fernandinho joined up with Guardiola when the latter became Manchester City manager in 2016.
5. Barcelona's goalscoring exploits saw the team end the group stages with the most goals scored of any team in the competition. How many goals did the Blaugrana score?

Answer: 18

Barcelona's group stage campaign started with a 3-1 victory at the Nou Camp against Sporting CP. They followed this up with a 2-1 win in the Ukraine against Shakhtar Donetsk with Lionel Messi scoring late on to seal victory. Barca then thrashed Basel 5-0 away before a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture.

Another five goal show occurred in Lisbon against Sporting CP with the Blaugrana winning 5-2. The campaign ended with a 3-2 loss to Shakhtar.
6. Which future star of Barcelona's arch-rival Real Madrid did the Catalans come face-to-face with in the Round of 16 in the 2008-09 Champions League?

Answer: Karim Benzema

Barcelona were paired with French team Lyon, who had won the previous seven French Ligue 1 titles before the 2008-09 season. Benzema was an academy product at Lyon, scoring 43 times in 112 games for the French giants before leaving for the Spanish capital in 2009.

In the tie itself, Barcelona won 6-3 on aggregate with the Blaugrana winning the second leg at the Camp Nou 5-2 after a 1-1 draw in France. Thierry Henry was the star of the show, scoring in both legs of the tie.
7. What was the aggregate score of Barcelona's quarter final meeting with Bayern Munich?

Answer: 5-1

The first leg at the Camp Nou was a masterclass by the Catalans. The home side scored twice in the first 12 minutes, with Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto'o netting the early goals. By half-time the score was already 4-0, with Messi scoring again before Thierry Henry piled on the misery.

While Bayern saved a bit of face in the second leg at the Allianz Arena, they could still only muster a 1-1 draw with Franck Ribery's goal for the hosts countered out by Seydou Keita's second half finish for the Blaugrana.
8. Barcelona edged out Chelsea in the semi-finals with an Andres Iniesta goal in stoppage time in the second leg knocking the English side out. It was a game marred by controversy after referee Tom Henning Ovrebo turned down several calls for Chelsea penalties. Which of these was *NOT* a penalty shout for Chelsea?

Answer: A shirt pull by Carles Puyol

After a goalless draw in the first leg at the Camp Nou, Chelsea appeared to have got the better of the Catalans in the second leg after midfield maestro Michael Essien scored a ninth minute cracker. What followed next was a series of penalty appeals from the English side that went ignored by Ovrebo.

The first appeal came after Malouda was dragged down by Dani Alves, only for the Norwegian referee to give a free-kick rather than the penalty that the Chelsea players wanted. The second saw Drogba tugged by Eric Abidal, which was ignored. The most understandable decision from Ovrebo came when Barca star Yaya Toure collided with Drogba, with Toure appearing to catch the ball. 10 minutes from time, Pique handled under pressure from Blues forward Nicolas Anelka, but Ovrebo continued to refuse to give a penalty. Iniesta's stoppage time equaliser sent Barcelona to the 2009 final and broke Chelsea's hearts.

The post-match scenes were ugly. Drogba marched to Ovrebo in a seemingly non-stop tirade, visibly referring to Ovrebo's performance as a "disgrace". Even mild-mannered Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink called the match result an "injustice". Ovrebo was later escorted out of England after receiving death threats. Chelsea fans would finally get what they saw as justice after knocking out Barca en route to their unlikely 2012 Champions League victory.
9. Barcelona sealed their place in history with a 2-0 win over Manchester United in the final of the 2009 Champions League. However, it was not the first time that the two clubs had met in a European final. Which other European competition had the two clubs met in the final of?

Answer: European Cup Winners' Cup

The rivalry between Barcelona and Man United in European finals traces back to 1991, when United defeated the Catalan side 2-1 in the final. Mark Hughes scored twice in the match for the Red Devils.

The 2009 final was hotly contested. Barca had to deal with early pressure from the Premier League and defending European champions, with Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo having two early chances. Still, Barcelona eventually came out on top. Samuel Eto'o scored an early goal which helped to set the pace for the Catalan side and eventually, Lionel Messi added Barca's second with a looping header after a cross from Xavi.

Barcelona won the match 2-0, adding the Champions League to their La Liga and
Copa Del Rey triumphs from the 2008-09 season. Barcelona were the first Spanish club to win the continental treble.
10. With their 2009 victory, Barcelona had now won three European Cups, joining an elite group of football clubs. How many other clubs had achieved this before Barcelona?

Answer: 6

Barcelona had at this point won European Cups in 1992, 2006 and 2009 and had also been runner-up in 1961 (lost to Benfica), 1986 (lost to Steaua Bucharest) and 1994 (lost to AC Milan). Other clubs with three European Cups at the time were Real Madrid (nine titles, won their third in 1958), AC Milan (seven titles, won their third in 1989), Liverpool (five titles, won their third in 1981), Ajax (four titles, won their third in 1973), Bayern Munich (four titles, won their third in 1976) and Manchester United (three titles, won their third in 2008).

Interestingly, the years 2008 to 2010 saw three consecutive clubs achieve their third European crown. Manchester United won their third in 2008 after previous wins in 1968 and 1999 while Inter Milan won their third in 2010 after victories in 1964 and 1965.
