Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Due to the club's finish in the 2003-04 Premier League season (4th behind Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United), Liverpool had to play in a qualifying round in the 2004-05 Champions League. Which club did Liverpool face in the third qualifying round?

Answer: Grazer AK

Liverpool struggled against their Austrian opponents. After a 2-0 away win, Grazer AK registered a surprise 1-0 win at Anfield in the second leg, meaning that Liverpool only progressed with a 2-1 aggregate score line.

Dinamo Bucuresti were the opponents of Manchester United in the third qualifying round and lost 5-1 on aggregate. Ferencavos lost to Sparta Prague. Maccabi Tel-Aviv were Liverpool's opponents in the qualifiers in the 2006-07 Champions League.
2. How many English clubs were ranked ahead of Liverpool in the seeding for the 2004-05 Champions League group stage?

Answer: 2

Liverpool were placed in Pot 2, for the teams seeded 9-16. Liverpool's eventual final opponents AC Milan were also in Pot 2. Manchester United were the highest ranked English side, and the fifth highest in the draw. Arsenal were in pot 1 with United. While Chelsea were in pot 2 alongside Liverpool, the Reds had a 90.511 UEFA coefficient compared to Chelsea's 67.511, meaning that UEFA still ranked Liverpool higher than Chelsea.
3. In Liverpool's second group game, the Reds suffered a 1-0 loss against Greek side Olympiakos. Who scored the only goal of the game?

Answer: Ieroklis Stoltidis

It was the only goal Stoltidis scored in the Champions League that season and it was Olympiakos' first goal of the group stage. Dordevic's only goal in the Champions League group stage that year came in the fifth game against Deportivo La Coruna. Rivaldo also scored on one occasion, netting in the team's 3-1 loss to Liverpool in the final group game.
4. Steven Gerrard's goal against Olympiakos in the final group game was one of the most iconic moments of Liverpool's 2004-05 Champions League campaign. In what minute did he score the goal that sent Liverpool into the knockout stage?

Answer: 86th minute

Liverpool, who needed to win by two goals at least to advance, trailed 1-0 at half time. Florent Sinama Pongolle equalised early in the second half, before Neil Mellor scored in the 81st minute to bring Liverpool back into contention. Five minutes later, Gerrard's incredible goal gave the Reds a 3-1 lead and took Liverpool to the next stage.
5. Liverpool comfortably dispatched the 2002 Champions League runners-up Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16, winning 6-2 on aggregate after home and away 3-1 wins. Which of these players did *NOT* score during the two games against Bayer Leverkusen?

Answer: Steven Gerrard

Leverkusen was expected to be a tough opponent for the Reds in the last 16 as the German side had won a group containing Real Madrid. However, this did not turn out to be the case. Goals from Garcia, Riise and Hamann gave Liverpool a 3-1 lead heading to Germany.

In the second leg, Garcia netted twice with Milan Baros also getting on the scoring sheet, giving Liverpool their 6-2 aggregate win.

7. Liverpool's semi-final against domestic rivals Chelsea was a controversial affair. After a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg, a much-disputed Luis Garcia goal saw Liverpool progress to the final with a 1-0 aggregate win. What justification did referee Lubos Michel use for giving Liverpool the goal?

Answer: Referee's assistant believed it was a goal

Michel said that his assistant had signalled that Garcia's shot had gone over the line. He also stated that he would have awarded a penalty to Liverpool anyway had he not given the goal, due to a foul by Cech on Liverpool forward Milan Baros. Garcia's goal remains one of the most controversial goals in Champions League history, and has since been dubbed the "ghost goal".
