Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Georgia is down by five points in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. The Bulldog quarterback gets the play from the coach, and when the ball is snapped, five Georgia wide receivers streak towards the end zone. The quarterback lofts the ball to the end zone and hopes his man can catch it. What is this desperation pass called?

Answer: Hail Mary

A Hail Mary is one of the most exciting plays in football.
2. Texas is up by three points after a Texas A&M touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Texas lines up for the ensuing kickoff when the Texas A&M kicker kicks the top of the ball, and the kicking team recovers the ball, and sends the offense back onto the field. What is this type of play called?

Answer: On-Side Kick

An on-side kick must go ten yards without the kicking team touching it. This is a very rare type of play, and is usually used when a team needs to score late in the game.
3. Missouri's quarterback is scrambling in his own end zone when Colorado's defensive end hits him. The ball comes loose and is recovered by Colorado. Who and what is scored?

Answer: Colorado - Touchdown

Since the loose ball was recovered by Colorado in Missouri's endzone, the resulting play is a touchdown for Colorado.
4. UCLA quarterback drops back to pass on third and ten. Three linebackers from USC charge through the line and bring him down. What type of play was called by the USC defensive coordinator?

Answer: Linebacker Blitz

A blitz is also known as a rush, typically 2-3 linebackers, or 1-2 defensive backs will bullet towards the quarterback in hopes of sacking him, or disrupting the timing with his receivers.
5. The Nebraska head coach has a had a really bad day. After a first down by Iowa State, he throws his clipboard halfway across the field. The linesman throws his flag and the Nebraska coach is given an unsportsmanlike penalty, and gain of fifteen yards for Iowa State. Later in the game after an interception by Iowa State, the coach yells some obscene words at the official. Again the official flags the coach for another foul. What will happen to the coach after the second foul?

Answer: Fifteen yard penalty, and the coach is ejected

A player or coach that earns two personal fouls is ejected from the contest.
6. Syracuse has the ball third and goal at the Virgina Tech one yard line. The Syracuse quarterback takes the snap and plows straight into the endzone. What is this type of play called?

Answer: Quarterback sneak

Quarterback sneaks usually are successful on goal line situations.
7. A field goal is considered "good" as long as the ball goes through the uprights and above the crossbar, or touches any part of the upright or crossbar, and still goes through.

Answer: True

A field goal is only considered good if it goes through the uprights and above the crossbar. However if the ball touches the uprights or cross bar, and proceeds to go through the uprights or crossbar, the field goal is scored.
8. What is the reason that when teams who are behind late in a game, will usually try quick plays and try to get out of bounds?

Answer: To conserve time and stop the clock

Quick plays near the sideline, and players who run out of bounds quickly help to conserve time and stop the clock.
9. What kind of play is an offensive coach most likely to call in the following situation: Third down and 15 yards at the opposing team's 20-yard line, 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter, down by five, with no time outs left?

Answer: Pass Play

A pass play is the most logical play in this situation. Running the ball would keep the clock moving with no way to stop it, a blitz is a defensive play, and a field goal would do no good because your team is down by five points.
10. Wisconsin lines up on second and two from its own forty five yard line. The quarterback takes the snap from the center and hands off to the tailback. The tailback immediatly runs to the line of scrimmage, stops and tosses the ball back to the quarterback. The quarterback then lofts the ball down the field to his receiver who scores a touchdown. What kind of play is this called?

Answer: Flea- Flicker Pass

This is one of the very very rare plays in football (because it was second and two). The coach decided that a "trick" play might be successful. The running back tosses the ball back to the quarterback after the handoff, this freezes the defense for a split second, allowing the wide receiver to shake his coverage and get open. This type of play is known as the flea-flicker.
