Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first defensive lineman to total 20 sacks in a season?

Answer: Mark Gastineau

Mark Gastineau was a New York Jet in 1984 when he recorded 22 sacks. He led the league twice in sacks in 1983 and 1984. Michael Strahan of the New York Giants broke Mark's record, by compiling 22.5 sacks in 2001.
2. The first Super Bowl occurred on January 15, 1967, pitting the Green Bay Packers against the Kansas City Chiefs. Which NFL team was the first to lose three Super Bowls?

Answer: Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings lost Super Bowl IV to the Chiefs, VIII to the Dolphins, then IX to the Steelers. They would further stretch their agony by losing to the Raiders in Super Bowl XI. In the very-first Super Bowl in 1967, the Packers defeated the Chiefs 35-10.
3. Hall of Fame and Baltimore Colt quarterback Johnny Unitas spent 17 of his 18 seasons with the horseshoe on his helmet. Which team did he retire with in 1973?

Answer: San Diego Chargers

Unitas was a Colt from 1956-1972, wearing the number 19 and his trademark high-top shoes. He led the league four times in passing yards and four times in touchdown passes. He helped the Colts to a 23-17 NFL Championship win against the Giants in 1958, then another NFL Championship over the Giants in 1959, 31-16.
4. Which of these running back greats rushed for more yardage in their career?

Answer: Franco Harris

The others never reached the 10,000-yard career mark. Harris played 12 of his 13 seasons as a Pittsburgh Steeler. Eight times in his career, he topped the 1000-yard season mark. He also led the league in 1976 with 14 rushing touchdowns. He retired as a Seattle Seahawk in 1984 with 12,120 career rushing yards, then was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990.
5. Who was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns during the 1950s?

Answer: Paul Brown

Not only the 1950s, but Brown had a stronghold on the team from 1946 until his retirement in 1962. His Cleveland career record was 158-48-8. Paul came out of retirement to take over the Cincinnati Bengals in 1968, and took them to a 55-56-1 over eight seasons. Brown died in 1991 at the age of 82 in Cincinnati.
6. Which team was the first to win a Super Bowl by more than 40 points?

Answer: San Francisco 49ers

It was Super Bowl XXIV on January 28, 1990. The 14-2 49ers took on the 11-5 Denver Broncos. Fans at the Louisiana Superdome watched in awe as the 49ers handily put away the Broncos, 55-10.
7. In 2004, Ravens defensive back Ed Reed intercepted a pass and ran it back a record 104 yards for a touchdown. During Week 12 of the 2008 season, who set a new record with his 108-yard TD interception?

Answer: Ed Reed

The others were all offensive linemen. Reed set this new 108-yard record against the Philadelphia Eagles on November 23. Baltimore won the game 36-9.
8. The San Diego Chargers went to their first Super Bowl in 1995 with Super XXIX, but lost to the San Francisco 49ers. Who was the head coach of the Chargers?

Answer: Bobby Ross

Ross, with the help of quarterback Stan Humphries, finished the season with a 11-5 record, good enough to take the AFC West crown. After defeating the Steelers in the Conference Championship 17-13, they met the Steve Young led 49ers in the Super Bowl. The 49ers would win it all 49-26.
9. Who was the first career Cincinnati Bengal to be inducted into pro football's Hall of Fame?

Answer: Anthony Munoz

The others were not career Bengal players, and even by 2005 were not members of the Hall of Fame. Munoz was a offensive tackle, who played his entire career from 1980-1992. He made the Pro Bowl 11 times in his career. Anthony also caught seven passes for 18 yards and four touchdowns in his career. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998.
10. If a Pittsburgh Steeler kicked a field goal with the ball hiked from the 50-yard line and made it, how long was the actual field goal?

Answer: 67 yards

With the ball hiked from the 50-yard line, add 10 yards for the end zone depth, then seven more for the ball placement. In 1970, New Orleans Saints kicker Tom Dempsey kicked a 63-yard field goal against the Lions. In 1998, Denver Bronco kicker Jason Elam tied Dempsey's record against the Jaguars.
