Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following clubs did not have colours of blue and gold?

Answer: Annandale

The Dales were maroon and gold. They joined the NSWRL in 1910 and lasted a measly 11 seasons, their last being 1920.
2. Which defunct club did Kevin Campion not play for?

Answer: Western Reds

He played for Gold Coast 1992-1995, St George 1996, Adelaide 1997, Brisbane 1998-2000, New Zealand 2001-2002, and has signed for North Queensland 2003-2004. He was also going to play for the Hunter Mariners in 1998 until the NRL didn't let Hunter be a part of the competition.
3. Which club was nicknamed the Dirty Reds?

Answer: Glebe

Glebe's uniform was maroon and white. St George was red and white, Illawarra had scarlet and white, and Annandale were maroon and gold.
4. Which team has a record win of 39-18 against Western Suburbs?

Answer: South Queensland

It was also their last premiership game, on the 31st August, 1997. The game was played at Lang Park, their home ground. The Crushers lasted 3 seasons, from 1995 to 1997.
5. Balmain's all-time record for most tries in a season was set by who?

Answer: Bobby Lulham

Patton had 95 for the club (the record), but only 19 in a season, in 1944. In 1978 Corowa scored 24, but the record belongs to Lulham for 28 in 1947.
6. Which prestigious award is named after at least one player from a defunct club?

Answer: Provan-Summons medal

The award voted by the fans for best and fairest. It was named after Norm Provan (St George) and Arthur Summons (Western Suburbs), from their memorable 1963 grand final pose. Churchill's South Sydney are no longer defunct.
Dally M's Eastern Suburbs are now the Sydney Roosters and will hopefully never be defunct. And although Mario Fenech's South Sydney were defunct and his Balmain and South Queensland are defunct, you could hardly call the Golden Falcon a prestigious award!
7. Which of these clubs never received a wooden spoon?

Answer: Manly-Warringah

Cumberland 'won' it in their only season (1908), the Dales 'won' it a few times, and University took it 10 seasons out of their 18! Manly-Warringah became defunct when they formed the Northern Eagles joint venture with North Sydney at the end of the 1999 season.

The joint venture lasted two season, and in 2002 Manly-Warringah again stood alone, becoming the "sole owner" of this NRL franchise.
8. Which player became infamous for his white boots in St George's record grand final loss 38-0 against Easts in 1975?

Answer: Graeme Langlands

'Changa' wore these when Arthur Beetson led Easts to their 11th premiership.
9. The NSWRL excluded which team at the end of the 1983 season, only to reinstate them three months later due to a court ruling?

Answer: Western Suburbs

Newtown and Wests were both kicked out but only Wests were allowed back in. Souths were booted out at the end of the 1999 season but were not reinstated until late 2001, for the 2002 season. Illawarra were only made a part of the NSWRL for 1982 and remained until their merger with St George for the start of the 1999 season.
10. Which defunct club was "revived" for the 1988 season?

Answer: Newcastle

Newcastle were a foundation club in 1908. They lasted through to the end of the 1909 season, and left to establish a local competition in Newcastle (the third biggest in the country behind Sydney and Brisbane). In 1988 Newcastle were "readmitted" into the competition as the Newcastle Knights, along with Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
