They exited the competition due to lack of funds. Newtown entered the NSWRL Metropolitan Cup competition (formed in 1990) in 1991, fielding first and reserve grade sides. This competition was seen as a second tier senior competition to the then Winfield Cup.

Despite operating on a shoestring budget, Newtown was the dominant club in the 1990s, winning first grade Premiership titles in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 1997. 2000 brought Newtown's first season in the NSWRL First Division competition, with the Jets acting as primary feeder team to the NRL's Auckland Warriors ... from www.newtownjets.com

Answer: Biggest losing streak (20 matches)

Incredibly, Newtown won their first and last matches of the season, but lost all 20 in-between. They finished with a 33-20 win over Souths, scoring 9 tries to give fans hope for a big improvement in 1978. However 1978 was almost as bad, they had 2 wins, a draw and 19 losses that year. Amazingly, only 3 years later, in 1981, they made the Grand Final.
