Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the 1995 line that featured Bobby Holik at center, and Mike Peluso and Randy McKay as wingers?

Answer: The Crash Line

Big, dominant, and not afraid to hit or be hit, the Crash Line was an important part of the Devils first Stanley Cup win. Holik and Peluso would play in all 20 games (McKay missed one). The trio would combine for 23 points (nine goals, 10 assists) and would notch three game winners en route to that first Cup championship.
2. What do John Madden and Brian Rafalski have in common?

Answer: Neither one was drafted by an NHL team

Madden attended the University of Michigan while Rafalski went to the University of Wisconsin. While Rafalski had always been in the top 10 Devils' scorers, Madden finished 13th in 1999-2000. And while Rafalski made his NHL debut in the 1999-2000 season, Madden had played four games the previous year.

In my opinion, teams everywhere should be kicking themselves for not drafting these guys. Madden was a Selke Trophy winner and was a threat to score every time he's on the penalty kill. Rafalski was an All-Star and was a great offensive defenseman who added spark to the power play.
3. Which Devil from the 2003-04 roster was a three-time finalist for the Hobey Baker Award?

Answer: Brian Gionta

Brian Gionta, the littlest guy on the team at 5'7", was a finalist three times at Boston College for College Player of the Year. He was also Hockey East Rookie of the Year in 1998, and was named to the Hockey East Second All-Star Team and NCAA East Second All-American team, also in 1998.

He made both First teams the next two seasons, and was Hockey East Player of the Year in 2001, a year in which he also led the league in goals (33) and points (54). Pandolfo was a Hober Baker finalist in 1995-96 while at Boston University.
4. In 2004, coach Pat Burns coached his 1000th game. Against which team were the Devils playing?

Answer: Atlanta Thrashers

It was February 27, 2004, at Continental Airlines Arena that coach Burns stood behind the bench for the 1000th time. Unfortunately it was in a losing effort as the Thrashers defeated the Devils 3-2.
5. Which of these two Devils were winners of the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year?

Answer: Brodeur & Gomez

Brodeur won the Calder trophy in 1993-94, playing in 47 games and posting 27 wins, 11 losses, and 8 ties. He had three shutouts, a goals against average of 2.40 and a save percentage of .915. Gomez won in 1999-2000, scoring 19 goals and 51 assists for 70 points, second best on the team, while playing in all 82 games.
6. Who technically scored a goal in game three of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals versus Ottawa on May 15, 2003, but the goal wasn't counted because no one realized it had actually gone in?

Answer: Jay Pandolfo

It's true! Jay Pandolfo fired the puck into the net, but it exited the same way it went in, too fast for anyone to notice! It was only discovered that the puck had actually crossed the goal line by the in-net camera much too late for the goal to count. The Devils won the game by the slim margin of 1-0, on a goal by Sergei Brylin.
7. Which former Devil scored two goals in his first NHL game, the first Devil ever to do so?

Answer: Mike Rupp

It was January 13, 2003, in a game against the Florida Panthers. It was also Rupp's birthday.
8. A labor dispute took the NHL away from it's fans before the 2004-05 season could begin. Who was the last Devil to score a goal before they were left hockeyless?

Answer: Scott Niedermayer

On April 17, 2004, in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Philadelphia Flyers, Scott Niedermayer scored the lone goal for the Devils in a 1-3 loss, ending their quest for a second straight Stanley Cup, and providing the last goal Devils fans would see by their team for over a year.
9. Martin Brodeur is one of just a handful of goalies to have scored more than one goal in his career. Against which teams did he score his first two goals against?

Answer: Canadiens & Flyers

His first goal came against the Montreal Canadiens on April 17, 1997. The second goal occurred on February 15, 2000, against the Philadelphia Flyers, where he became the first goaltender in NHL history to score a game winner.
10. After winning the Stanley Cup in 1995, the Devils' hopes of making the playoffs boiled down to the last game of the season. Win, and their hopes were still alive (they would still need a little help from another team). Lose, and they would be sent home packing. Unfortunately, the Devils lost 2-5. Which team ended their playoff hopes?

Answer: Ottawa Senators

For just the sixth time in NHL history, and the first time since the 1969-70 Montreal Canadiens, the defending Stanley Cup Champions did not make the playoffs the following year. The Devils had a 2-1 lead heading into the third period, and had beaten the Sens their three previous meetings that season, but allowed four goals in the final frame to end any chance of repeating as Cup champions.
11. In a game on October 20, 2000, the Devils blanked the Pittsburgh Penguins 9-0. Two Devils not only scored hat tricks, but had four goals each. Who were they?

Answer: Randy McKay & John Madden

McKay and Madden manhandled the Penguins that night, causing hats to go flying to the ice on two separate occasions. The other goal was scored by Turner Stevenson.
12. Before the lockout that canceled the 2004-05 NHL season, how many captains did the Devils have in team history?

Answer: Five

Don Lever (1982-1984), Mel Bridgman (1984-1987) when he was traded to Detroit for Chris Cichocki), Kirk Muller (1987-1991) when he was traded to the Canadiens), Bruce Driver (1991-1992), and Scott Stevens who captained from September 1992 until the lockout. All have worn the captain C.
13. Which of the following Devil players set a team record for most consecutive games (regular season) with a point?

Answer: Patrik Elias

Patrik Elias went 15 straight games scoring a point from December 27, 1999, to January 28, 2000. He had 15 goals and nine assists for 24 points in that span.
14. What incident caused Martin Brodeur to state: "It's the first time that I can recall calling a bench minor penalty that really fit the crime"?

Answer: Coach Robbie Ftorek threw a bench onto the ice

This memorable moment came on January 29, 2000, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Ftorek became enraged in the second period when play was allowed to continue even though Jay Pandolfo was lying on the ice bleeding after being checked head-first into the boards by Martin Dandenault. Because referee Stephen Walkom hadn't blown the whistle, Kirk Maltby was able to score, putting the Red Wings up 3-1.

It was then that Ftorek threw the bench onto the ice, leading to a bench minor penalty. After the game Walkom said he didn't stop play because he didn't see Padolfo, who required 84 stitches to close four wounds on his forehead and around his left eye. Ftorek was suspended for one game and paid a monetary fine.
15. Ken Daneyko retired after the 2003 season after spending his entire career with the Devils and wore jersey #3. How many players wore that number before him?

Answer: 1

Only one other player, Dave Hutchison, wore #3 for the Devils prior. Daneyko joined the team in 1983 and played in 1458 regular and post-season games. He won three Stanley Cups as a Devil.
16. Which of the following seasoned veterans who spent some time playing in New Jersey, had the most regular season goals for the Devils?

Answer: Dave Andreychuk

Dave Andreychuk played in 224 games with the Devils between March 13, 1996, and the end of the 1998-99 season. He scored 64 goals, including the 500th of his career on March 15, 1997 (the 26th player to score 500). As a twist, he would score his 600th career goal against the Devils on November 23, 2002, just the 14th player to hit that mark.

He signed with Boston on July 29, 1999, and played in both Colorado and Buffalo before ending up in Tampa Bay where he would finally win a Stanley Cup after 22 years in the league. "Stumpy" Steve Thomas was obtained October 3, 1995, and scored 55 goals in 193 games wearing the red and black until his departure after the 1997-98 season.

He would sign with Toronto on July 30, 1998, and play in Chicago, Anaheim and Detroit until the lockout of 2004-05. Alexander Mogilny played in just 87 games from March 14, 2000, through the 2000-01 season (he would join the Maple Leafs as a free agent during the summer), but managed to score 46 goals. Doug "Killer" Gilmour scored just 20 times in the 83 regular season games he played as a Devil, spanning from February 25, 1997, to the end of the 1997-98 season.

He then signed as a free agent with Chicago July 28, 1998, and spent time in Buffalo, Montreal, and Toronto before retiring after 20 season in the NHL before the 2003-04 season.
17. Before the Devils had a minor league affiliation with the AHL's Albany River Rats and Utica Devils, what was the name of their top development farm team?

Answer: Maine Mariners

The Devils announced their purchase of the Mariners on July 5 1983. The franchise moved to Utica, New York and became the Devils on April 23, 1987, and then moved to Saint John and became the Flames after the 1993 season. On May 5, 1993, the Devils announced their new agreement with the new Albany River Rats (who had been the Capital District Islanders). Happily, the Rats won the Calder Cup the same year the Devils won their first Stanley Cup (1995).
18. In the mid to late '90s, the Devils held a 20 game unbeaten streak against which rivals?

Answer: New York Rangers

Perhaps losing to the Rangers in game 5 of the 1997 Eastern Conference Semifinals and being eliminated from the postseason fueled the fire for the Devils. From November 11, 1997, to March 21, 2001, the Devils managed to either win or tie their enemies from across the river.

The New Jersey boys scored 72 goals to the Rangers 38, and managed 14 wins, six ties, and one shutout over this span of three years, four months and 10 days, with Martin Brodeur in goal for each contest. It was during their last meeting of the 2000-01 season, on March 31, that the Rangers ended the streak, winning 4-3.
19. Although he was revered as one of the greatest defensemen ever, Scott Stevens had never won a Norris Trophy. He has however, been runner-up twice, and both times was beaten by the same man. Who was the blueliner that denied Stevens the title of best defenseman?

Answer: Ray Bourque

"The fifth most fearsome player in NHL history" according to a 2001 article in "The Sporting News", Scott Stevens lost the Norris Trophy twice to Bruins great Raymond Bourque (1988 and 1994). Stevens is one of the most fierce hitters in the league, but he is also one of the cleanest; he can count the number of career elbowing penalties he's been assessed on one hand.

In his 22 year career, he's won three Stanley Cups (1995, 2000, 2003), won the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP once (2000), has been voted to the All-Star team 14 times, has never finished as a minus in the "+/-" column, is the NHL all-time leader in games played by a defenseman, was the first player to play 600+ games with two different teams (Washington and New Jersey, of course), holds the NHL record for most games played by a defenseman in the playoffs with 233, and even led the Devils in scoring one year (1993-94: 18 goals, 60 assists). Can we say Hall of Fame?
20. What was the last year the color green was a part of the Devils wardrobe?

Answer: 1992

The green on the jerseys was removed and replaced with black, and less stripes appeared on the sweater as well. The jerseys are affectionately referred to "Christmas jerseys" and are chastised as being ugly. Truthfully, I kind of like them. Without the ugly green pants, they're pretty cool! But I don't want them to be brought back or anything!
