Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which New Jersey Devil played for the Danbury Trashers of the UHL before eventually coming back to play for the Devils in the 2006-07 season?

Answer: Mike Rupp

Mike Rupp played for the Trashers for a few games during the lockout of 2004-05. Brylin, Madden, and Andreychuk never played for the Danbury Trashers during their two year history, 2004-05 and 2005-06.
2. Besides Anssi Salmela, who was traded to the New Jersey Devils from the Atlanta Thrashers in February 2010?

Answer: Ilya Kovalchuk

Ilya Kovalchuk and Anssi Salmela were traded to the New Jersey Devils for Johnny Oduya, Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, and New Jersey's first round draft pick on February 4th, 2010.
3. At the start of the Devils franchise, where did they play and what was their team name?

Answer: Kansas City Scouts

The New Jersey Devils started in Kansas City as the Scouts in 1974. Two years later, they moved to Denver and became the Colorado Rockies (not to be confused with the baseball team). They moved to New Jersey in 1982.
4. Which of these players never played for the New Jersey Devils? (Hint: The three incorrect ones all played on the same line at some point.)

Answer: Mattias Norstrom

Sykora, Arnott, and Elias were all important members of the New Jersey Devils in the early 2000s. Norstrom played for the Rangers, Kings, and Stars at different times from 1993-2008.
5. After making the playoffs for 13 straight seasons, the Devils missed the playoffs for the 2010-11 season. How many points did they score through the season (note: points are how teams are ranked in the NHL, goals are the difference in games)?

Answer: 81

174 is the number of goals the Devils scored that season, 82 is the number of games they played, and 38 is the amount of games the Devils won. That leaves 81 which is obviously the amount of points scored. The way the points system works in the NHL is you get 2 points for any win and 1 point for any loss in overtime or shootout. 76 of the Devils 81 points came from wins, the remaining 5 points came from loses in OT or shootout.

This was the least amount of points they have scored in a single season since 1990-91 when they scored 79 pts, except for the lockout shortened 1994-95 season where they won their first Stanley Cup.
6. When Patrik Elias broke the record for most goals as a New Jersey Devil on December 17, 2011, whose record did he beat?

Answer: John MacLean

Kovalchuk would be a good prediction for someone to break Elias' record, but he started his career with the Atlanta Thrashers, therefore not scoring goals with New Jersey. Sundstrom holds the record for points in a single playoff game. Gionta holds the record for goals in a season as a Devil.
7. Which of these former Devils did not play on all of the first three championships?

Answer: Jason Arnott

Arnott was traded, in 2002, to the Dallas Stars, in the Jaime Langenbrunner trade that also involved Joe Nieuwendyk and Randy McKay. He then couldn't contribute to the Devil's third championship.
1st was 1994-95
2nd was 1999-00
3rd was 2002-03.
8. In 1980, Herb Brooks led the U.S. hockey team to a gold medal in the winter Olympics. He also coached the New Jersey Devils for 1992-93. Did he lead the Devils to a Stanley Cup that season?

Answer: No

He coached them for that single season. He made the playoffs with them but lost in the first round to the Penguins.
9. Which of these players was never a New Jersey Devils captain?

Answer: Bobby Holik

Jamie was the captain from 2007-2011. Patrik Elias was captain for the 2006-07 season. Scott Stevens was the captain for 12 seasons from 1992-2004 and all three Stanley Cups of the era (1993-94, 1999-00 and 2002-03). Bobby Holik was a key member of the Devils for a while, but he was never the captain.
10. Which Scott did not play for the Devils during the 2002-03 season when they won their third Stanley Cup?

Answer: Scott Speed

Scott Speed is a former NASCAR driver. Both Niedermeyer and Stevens have had their numbers retired by the New Jersey Devils. Gomez went to play for the Rangers in July 2007. Niedermeyer and Stevens both played in the Devils' first three Stanley Cup wins 1994-95, 1999-00 and 2002-03.
