Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Most Valuable Player Award by the Associated Press was presented in 1957. Which NFL future Hall of Fame running back was the first to receive this coveted award?

Answer: Jim Brown

Brown was in his rookie season in 1957 with the Cleveland Browns. Jim ran the ball for nine seasons, while leading the league in eight. His 1962 season found him finishing fourth in rushing yardage, only due to injuries. It was his only season that he rushed for less than 1000 yards (996). Brown walked away from the game in 1965, as possibly the greatest running back in the history of professional football.
2. The Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls in the 1960s. Which quarterback led his team to become the second NFL franchise to win a Super Bowl?

Answer: Joe Namath

Super Bowl III pitted Joe Namath and the New York Jets against the heavily-favored Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts. Namath, in a pre-game interview, made comments about the Jets winning the game. His comments were taken out of context, and made to believe that he was actually making a guaranteed win prediction for the Jets.

The Jets did win the Super Bowl 16-7. Green Bay won the first two Super Bowls by defeating the Chiefs and Raiders, respectively.
3. The Golden Toe Award is given annually to the most outstanding field goal kicker or punter in the National Football League. Which kicker won the inaugural award in 1971?

Answer: Garo Yepremian

Garo, wearing the number 1 on his back from 1966-1981, won the first Golden Toe Award. He was also part of the 1972 Miami Dolphin perfect season. Garo played for two seasons with the Lions before moving to Miami for nine seasons. He also played two seasons with the Buccaneers, and one with the Saints.
4. After the AFL-NFL merger, the name of the NFLs All-Star game was changed to the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl. When was the first 'Pro Bowl' game played?

Answer: 1971

The two leagues merged in 1970. The first Pro Bowl game was played on January 24, 1971. The NFC dominated the game 27-6, which was played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The NFC would win six of the first 10 Pro Bowls.
5. Who was the first player to record 200 sacks in NFL history?

Answer: Bruce Smith

Smith was a feared defensive end from 1985-2003. He played 15 of his 19 seasons with the Buffalo Bills, then his final four with the Washington Redskins. He had five sacks in his final season, totaling 200 for his career.
6. Which of the following NFL quarterbacks wore the number 13 on his back?

Answer: Dan Marino

Although Marino never won a Super Bowl, he broke and set many NFL records during his career. He was not a superstitious person. Dan played his entire career with the Dolphins from 1983-1999. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005, then later became a sportscaster. Joe Montana wore the number 16 and 19, Terry Bradshaw wore the number 12, and Elway the number 7.
7. The first Defensive Player of the Year Award was presented in 1971. Which Minnesota Viking defensive tackle won this inaugural award?

Answer: Alan Page

Page was a dynamo, and part of the "Purple People Eaters" of the Vikings' heyday. Drafted out of Notre Dame, Alan played 13 of his 16 seasons with the Vikings, then his final three with the Bears. He retired in 1981, then was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988.
8. Which team in the 1990s went to four consecutive Super Bowls, and walked away without even one win?

Answer: Buffalo Bills

The 1990-1993 seasons were very good for the Bills, but they couldn't cash in the big game of the Super Bowl. They lost them all to the Giants, Redskins, then two to the Cowboys. Marv Levy had the helm of the Bills in all those seasons. He coached for 17 seasons with the Chiefs and Bills.
9. The NFL Coach of the Year Award began in 1957. Which Detroit Lion head coach won this inaugural award?

Answer: George Wilson

Wilson, after playing for 10 seasons, became the head coach of the Lions in 1957. As a rookie head coach, he took all the marbles by taking Detroit all the way to the NFL Championship. Wilson had the helm of the Lions from 1957-1965, then retired after coaching the Dolphins from 1966-1969.
10. Who was the first quarterback in NFL history to throw 300 interceptions?

Answer: Brett Favre

Favre was in his 18th NFL season in 2008 when he became the first quarterback to throw 300. He broke the record of George Blanda's 277 in 2007 as a member of the Packers.
