Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On what famous track of the past can you find "Jukskei Sweep"?

Answer: Kyalami

Kyalami was a fabulous track. It was abandoned and reused in 1992 and 1993. But in those two years, the circuit was modified for safety reasons, and lacked the glitter of the old circuit, which was lost forever after the 1985 race.
2. "Virage de l'ecole". On which circuit could we find this sweep?

Answer: Circuit Paul Ricard

This semi-fast sweep was removed from this track, following Elio De Angelis's fatal 1986 testing accident. Paul Ricard was a spectacular track. The cars would rush down the Mistral straight at 220mph, and take the Signes corner flat in sixth gear.
3. On what circuit is the "Brooklands" corner located?

Answer: Silverstone

This corner is on the new Silverstone circuit. The track was deeply revised and changed for the 1991 race. The old Silverstone was one of the fastest and most challenging circuit in the world.
4. "Wurth" corner is part of which new millenium circuit?

Answer: Catalunya Circuit

Strangely enough, a Germanic name for a Spanish circuit is unusual. Catalunya is fairly technical, but otherwise a boring modern circuit.
5. On which famous circuit of the past could we find the "Tunnel Oost" kink?

Answer: Zandvoort

This circuit stopped hosting Grand-Prix racing after 1985. A fabulous track, home of some great races of the past. The "Tarzan" corner is probably the most famous outbraking corner of them all.
6. On what famous circuit of yesteryear could you find the "Texaco Chicane"?

Answer: Osterreichring,Zeltweg

Sadly, the old Zeltweg was transformed for safety reasons and returned to the formula 1 calendar in 1997. The old track was very quick, with long frightening corners. Race averages were in the region of 195km/h.
7. What part of the Monaco circuit disappeared in the eighties?

Answer: La Chicane

La Chicane was a quick corner, but also a dangerous one. In retrospect, it was a good decision to remove it and replace it by a slow first gear "s". This is where Lorenzo Bandini crashed fatally in the 1967 edition.
8. On what part of the circuit did Patrick Depailler lose his life during a test session at Hockenheim in 1980?

Answer: The Ostkurve

In 1980, the Ostkurve was a flat out fast right hand curve. Afterwards, they added a chicane in order to slow the cars down. Depailler crashed due to suspension failure.
9. "La Fouine" corner is part of which circuit of the past?

Answer: Dijon-Prenois

This circuit was last used in 1984. Oddly shaped, it's overhead shot reminds us the shape of a mexican hat.
10. On what track can you find "Degner Curve"?

Answer: Suzuka

Suzuka is a technical circuit that was used by Honda as their test track in the 60s. It hosted many championship showdowns, namely the Prost/Senna years of 1988, '89, and 1990.
