Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which track included Brabham Straight, Surtees, Dingle Dell and Clark Curve?

Answer: Brands Hatch

A dispute between Bernie Ecclestone and the owner of Brands Hatch, John Foulston, led to the British Grand Prix being moved to another venue. The last F1 race at Brands Hatch was the 1986 Grand Prix.
2. A track made from existing roads, with a tunnel, a curve by a casino, and a swimming pool, has made this a most popular venue for F1.

Answer: Monaco

The first Monaco Grand Prix was held in 1929, when William Grover Williams won in a Bugatti 35B.
3. Built in 1922 as a road course, the banking was last used in the tragic 1961 race.

Answer: Monza

In 1961, Wolfgang von Trips was killed in a clash with Jim Clark; von Trips was on the verge of becoming World Champion.
4. Jackie Stewart called it "the Green Hell"; Niki Lauda was severely burned in an accident here in 1976.

Answer: Nurburgring

The old circuit at Nurburgring would be considered too dangerous for today's standards, but its 15.1 mile track with 176 corners made for exciting racing.
5. Including sections of the RN138 and the RN840 roads, the wooded section of this track ran down to a hairpin curve.

Answer: Rouen-les-Essarts

Rouen hosted the French Grand Prix only five times, between 1952 and 1968, when Jo Schlesser died sliding off the track in his experimental Honda V8.
6. Graham Hill won here almost as often as he did at Monaco, yet it was here where he shattered his legs in an accident, hastening his decline.

Answer: Watkins Glen

Sited in the Finger Lakes section of New York State, the track is named after a beautiful nearby gorge which has in excess of 640 steps from top to bottom.
7. Home to races from 1970 to 1987, this very fast track included curves called Hella-Licht and Sebringkurve.

Answer: Osterreichring

Perhaps the most memorable race was in 1975, when rain halted the race before half distance and driver Vittorio Brambilla crashed going across the finish line.
8. With unpredictable weather at the track, drivers can go from a dry start into a sudden wall of spray; the Grands Prix moved to another track in 1970 but returned in 1982 after the track was redesigned.

Answer: Spa Francorchamps

Those who have watched recent races at Spa know the first corner really can get interesting - fortunately modern safety devices have prevented the circuit regaining its reputation as a life-taker, but one finds oneself holding one's breath while cars go airborne.
9. Between 1950 and 1990, which American track hosted the greatest number of Grands Prix?

Answer: Watkins Glen

It is said that a local ostrich race drew bigger crowds than the races in Phoenix in 1989, 1990 and 1991.
10. At which course was Ayrton Senna killed?

Answer: Imola

Three-time world champion Ayrton Senna crashed at the Tamburello corner in 1994, while driving for Williams.
