Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first manager of the Florida Marlins?

Answer: Rene Lachemann

It was Lachemann's first managing job since 1984 when he managed the Milwaukee Brewers. He led the Marlins to 64 wins in 1993, and never won more than 67 games in a season with the Marlins. He was given the boot in 1996.
2. Who were the MVPs of the 1997 and 2003 Marlin World Series winning seasons?

Answer: Livan Hernandez and Josh Beckett

Two pitchers that sort of came out of nowhere in their respective years, and dominated the postseason.
3. Who started a majority of the Marlins' games at second base during their innagural season of 1993?

Answer: Bret Barberie

It was the little known Bret Barberie that formed the double-play tandem with the better known Walt Weiss at shortstop. Barberie played 97 games at second base for the Marlins that season, finishing with a .277 batting average.
4. What former Pittsburgh Pirate led the Marlins in home runs during their inaguaral 1993 season?

Answer: Orestes Destrade

Destrade, whom had brief stints with both the Pirates and New York Yankees, led the Marlins' lackluster offense with 20 dingers. Destrade was out of Major League Baseball by the next season.
5. What Marlin hit the walk-off RBI single to beat the Cleveland Indians the 1997 World Series?

Answer: Edgar Renteria

The Marlins won the series in only their fifth season. Craig Counsell scored the winning run.
6. What Marlin infielder/outfielder was the MVP of the 1995 All-Star game?

Answer: Jeff Conine

Jeff Conine went 1 for 1 with a game-winning solo home run in the top of the 8th inning. Sheffield didn't make the '95 all-star squad, though he was a member of the Marlins. Bonilla was an all-star in '95, but he was representing the New York Mets. Alou failed to make the team as a member of the Montreal Expos.
7. In 2003, Juan Pierre won the NL stolen base title. How many Marlins had won the stolen base title before him?

Answer: 3

Marlins' centerfielder Chucky Carr ranked first in the innagural season of '93 with 58 steals. Second baseman Quilvio Veras swiped 56 bags in 1995, good enough for the league lead. All-star Luis Castillo, also a second baseman, led the N.L. in steals in 2000 and 2002 with 62 and 48 swipes, respectively. Juan Pierre snagged 65 steals in 2003 as a member of the Marlins for his second National League stolen base title.

His first came 2 years earlier as a member of the Colorado Rockies.
8. I was runner-up to Chris Carpenter for the 2005 Cy Young Award. Who am I?

Answer: Dontrelle Willis

Despite the fact that Dontrelle had 22 victories to Carpenter's 21 and a 2.63 ERA to Carpenter's 2.83, Carpenter got the nod for the highly coveted pitching award. Roger Clemens finished 3rd behind Carpenter and "D-Train".
9. How many seasons did the franchise take to win its first World Series?

Answer: 5

The Marlins' franchise began in 1993. They won their first series title against the Indians in 1997.
10. Which of these men had never managed the Marlins?

Answer: Buddy Bell

Jeff Torborg was replaced by Jack McKeon in 2003. McKeon led the Marlins to a World Series title that year. Hall of Famer Tony Perez managed the fish for 114 games during the 2001 season. John Boles was Jim Leyland's replacement and pieced the team back together after the infamous firesale after the 1997 championship. Boles managed the Marlins from 1999-2001 and also had a 75 game stint as manager in 1996. Buddy Bell has had stints with the Detroit Tigers, Colorado Rockies, and Kansas City Royals, but has never managed the Marlins.
