Answer: Walter Johnson

Johnson has 416; Alexander and Mathewson are tied for third with 373; Spahn has 363 wins.
2. With 29 homers in 1919, Babe Ruth broke the single season record for home runs in one season. Whose record did he break?

Answer: Ned Williamson

The record before Ruth was Williamson's 27 in 1884. Williamson, who was a pitcher and third baseman for the Chicago White Stockings, belted 27 home runs, a tremendous amount in those days, in 1884.
3. Which of these pitchers did not play 25 years of major league baseball?

Answer: Hoyt Wilhelm

Hough pitched 25 years; John 26; Ryan 27. Wilhelm and his knuckleball, only pitched 21 years in the bigs, from 1952-1972. He began his career as a New York Giant, and retired as a Los Angeles Dodger.
4. Who set a record for shutouts in one season with 16?

Answer: Pete Alexander

Alexander hurled 16 shutouts in 1916 with the Phillies. He also had 12 shutouts the previous season. He retired in 1930, with a 373-208 record.
5. Who won the AL batting title in 1968, with a .301 average, the lowest ever in the 20th century for a batting title award?

Answer: Carl Yastrzemski

Yaz was the only player in the AL to hit over .300 in the "Year of the Pitcher". Yaz won two other batting titles prior to the '68 season, including the Triple Crown in 1967.

In the 1947 Series, Bevens came within one out of a no-hit ballgame. With two outs, Cookie Lavagetto of the Brooklyn Dodgers, came up and hit a double, scoring two and breaking up the no-hitter for Bevens. It was the game winning hit. This happened in game 4 of the Series. The Yankees won the Series, 4 games to 3.
7. Who was the last pitcher in the 20th century, to win 40 games in a season?

Answer: Ed Walsh

Walsh, with the Chicago White Sox went 40-15 in 1908 with a 1.42 ERA. Chesbro went 41-12 with the New York Highlanders in 1904.
8. Who was the leadoff hitter for the 1927 'Murderer's Row' Yankee team?

Answer: Earle Combs

Combs regularly batted leadoff, and led the roster for arguably the greatest team of all-time. This outfielder nicknamed, 'The Kentucky Colonel', batted .356 with 31 stolen bases in the season.
9. How many consecutive seasons did Ty Cobb hit .300?

Answer: 23

Cobb hit .300, a record 23 times in a row from 1906-1928. This included seasons of batting .420 in 1911, .409 in 1912, and .401 in 1922. He complied a lifetime batting average of .367.
10. Who gave up Bobby Thomson's famous, "Shot Heard Round the World", home run?

Answer: Ralph Branca

Branca gave up Thomson's shot in 1951. Interestingly enough, nine years later, a player with the same first name (Ralph Terry), gave up a homer almost as famous. Terry served up Bill Mazeroski's walkoff home run that won the 1960 World Series for the Pirates, the only 7th game, bottom of the 9th innning, World Series winning home run.
