Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ah, I love to see my knight in shining armor. Do you know what sport the Vegas Golden Knights play?

Answer: Ice Hockey

Vegas Knights are the first NHL team in Las Vegas. The very first season the team broke records by not only making the play offs, but taking the team to the Stanley Cup finals. The first three seasons they made the playoffs every single time.

When Marc Andre Fleury was the goalie and if he had a shut out at home, you needed to take the winning ticket to Krispy Kreme doughnuts and get a free dozen glazed doughnuts. Vegas is pretty proud of "Flower", his nickname. He's actually attempted to get his 'free dozen' himself. Fleury is known for his silly antics and makes the game even more fun.
2. If you want to see Buffalo you may want to head north to South Dakota. If you want to see the Buffalo Bills playing a sport in New York, what sport would you be watching?

Answer: American Football

Just down the street from Niagara Falls you can watch the Buffalo Bills scoring touchdowns at the Bills Stadium. One of my favorite players from years ago was Jim Kelly, who was a quarterback for the team in 1986 for 10 years. Another name you may recall was OJ Simpson, known as "The Juice", who was also a player for the Bills.

He played the position of running back in 1969. He was actually the first man to rush 2,000 yards in just one season.
3. Jackie Robinson wore the #42 and was known for playing what sport?

Answer: Baseball

I actually visited the Negro Baseball Museum in Birmingham, Alabama and they had quite a display on Jackie. Jackie became the first African American man to play Major League Baseball. He was signed on by Branch Rickey, who was portrayed by Harrison Ford in the movie, "42".

The movie showed the racism that he faced playing baseball and those who also supported him. Chadwick Boseman played the role of Jackie and did an outstanding job.
4. I have a special bicycle that features my favorite hockey team on it and I ride it everywhere I can. There's supposedly this race in France that I can ride a bike. What bike race is this?

Answer: Tour de France

The very first Tour de France was in 1903 and it has been going strong ever since that date. Most of the race is held in France, but not always just in France. You could be going through parts of Italy, Germany and other countries as well. This is not just a quick one day race. This is a multi day race, over 20 days to be exact. The race has been increased over the years.

The most embarrassing winner was Lance Armstrong, who was the winner for seven years, until they found traces of drugs in his urine. All that hard work down the drain, for what? Cheating! He's not alone, many men have used "doping" as they call it, to help them win. At least four other men have achieved five wins, Lance could have been on that list, but was stripped of his titles.
5. With the 'sun' going down in Galveston, Texas you can see another "sun" team playing a sport in Phoenix. What "sun" sport is this?

Answer: Basketball

The Phoenix Suns joined the NBA in 1968. Some of their most popular players over the years have included Charles Barkley, who won the MVP Award in the 1992/93 season. They won the division and conference titles that year also.

The Suns won their first division title in 1981 and their first conference title in 1976.

Paul Westphal, who played for the Suns and later became the head coach, passed away at the age of 70 in 2021.
6. I actually went to this place and got down to "kiss the bricks" like the winners do. In which sport did Dale Jarrett start this tradition?

Answer: NASCAR

Dale Jarrett and his crew chief, Todd Parrott, walked up to the finish line of bricks in 1996, knelt down and kissed those red bricks. In 2020 I went to the Indianapolis 500 and took the Kiss the Brick tour. They drove us around in a small tram, where we stopped at the start/finish line. Each of us got down on our hands and knees separately and kissed those bricks.

Not only is the NASCAR Race held here, but the Indianapolis 500 for the Indy cars as well. The race is held in May on Memorial Day weekend. The first race was in 1911 and was won by an American, Ray Harroun. Some of the top racers that have won the 500 include Al Unser and AJ Foyt.

I highly recommend this fun tour if you get to Indiana.
7. I took this beautiful picture of an eagle on a cruise in Alaska. You can see an 'eagle' playing in Philadelphia. What sport are they playing?

Answer: American Football

Vincent Papale played the wide receiver position for the Philadelphia Eagles back in 1976. You can catch his inspiring story in the movie, "Invincible" with Diane Lane.

The team won their first Super Bowl in 2017 season. They defeated the Patriots with a score of 41 to 33 in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 4, 2018. Nick Foles was the MVP for the game for his quarterback skills. Not bad for a back up quarterback.
8. St Louis is known for the large Arch, but also you can find a bunch of Cardinals playing games. What game do they play?

Answer: Baseball

Right on the Illinois and Missouri border you can find these birds playing Major League Baseball. The team was established in 1882 and has won over 10 World Series championships.

Their name has changed over the years from the St. Louis Brown Stockings in 1882 to the Cardinals in 1900. In 2006 the Cardinals moved to their new stadium, the Busch Stadium. They first started playing at Sportsman's Park in 1882.

Some favorite players have included Stan "the man" Musial and Ozzie Smith, who are both in the Hall of Fame.
9. I took a picture of this large 'leaf'. It's not a 'maple leaf' but it's definitely a large leaf. What sport can you find a "Maple Leaf" playing?

Answer: Ice Hockey

Just north of the United States you can find this Canadian Hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. They moved to play at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto in 1999. The NBA team for Toronto, the Raptors, also play at this arena. They play in the Atlantic division along with the Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers.

The Leafs have won over 12 Stanley Cups since 1917 and plan on winning a lot more in future years.
10. I'm on the strip and I see this race car. Chase Elliott may have run out of gas on the Las Vegas strip, but he took home the 'cup' in 2020 for what sport?

Answer: NASCAR

Chase Elliott followed in his father's footsteps and became a NASCAR driver. He may be just a young man born in 1995, but his records are plentiful. Chase picked up his very first NASCAR Cup win in 2020. It was only his fifth full season of driving with the pros. There is a reason that Chase won the honor of the most popular driver with his fans - he's kind, sweet, loves his fans and will sign every autograph he possibly can.

This picture was taken on the strip where all the drivers from 'the Chase' do burnouts on the strip, one by one. Chase's #9 car took a dive and he had to be towed back to the speedway. I got a picture not only of the burn out, but the car being towed also. He had to laugh at himself and took photos of the dead car. No one is laughing now Chase.
