Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Boxing is over 3000 years old.

Answer: True

Boxing was first introduced as a sport in 1500 BC. It has changed a lot over the years, but the basic idea and object has remained the same.
2. When a boxer uses the "Orthodox" stance, he is standing with what?

Answer: His left foot forward

"Orthodox" boxers are right-handed, meaning that they will always lead with their left. Therefore, they will stand with their left foot and fist in front. The opposite (right foot forward) is called the southpaw stance.
3. In most jurisdictions, the referee must stop a match when what happens?

Answer: One boxer can no longer defend himself

It is required for the safety of the participants. A referee may stop a match if one boxer breaks the rules, but it is not required. The referee may choose on his own to issue a disqualification.
4. According to statistics, boxing is a very dangerous sport.

Answer: False

Due to the nature of this sport, the rules are designed to protect the participants. Statistics show that boxing produces the fewest injuries of all of the contact sports.
5. What is the white portion of the glove for?

Answer: It marks the scoring area

One point is awarded when any portion of the white area strikes any one of the target areas. The target area is the front of the body from the belt line up to the forehead, and the side of the body anywhere in the ribcage area, and side of the face. Strikes anywhere else are illegal, and a boxer can be disqualifed.
6. A good body type for a boxer is what?

Answer: Strong upper legs and chest/shoulders, but not huge arms

A boxer is disadvantaged with large arms. It is extra mass to have to throw around. The best boxers are "small" guys because they can move faster. Strong chest and shoulders are important because punching power actually comes from these muscles, not biceps and triceps, as commonly believed. Also, speed is more important than strength.
7. What size gloves are the regulation weight used in USA amateur competition?

Answer: 12 oz

10 oz. are used in professional boxing, 16 oz. are used in training. If you can go three rounds with 16 oz. gloves on, then 12 oz. gloves should be a piece of cake. There are exceptions, however. In some places, younger boxers (under age 15) will compete using 10 oz. gloves.
8. The ultimate object of boxing is to what?

Answer: Knock out your opponent

Although scoring points is important, and of course it helps to not get hit yourself, a knockout does guarantee a win.
9. Mouthguard, headgear, and groin protector are required for all competition boxers.

Answer: True

These are required for the safety of the boxers. In some areas, headgear and groin protector were not required up until about the mid-1990s. Mouthguards have been required for many years. Headgear is not required for professional boxers.
10. Sylvester Stallone had a professional boxing bout.

Answer: False

Although portrayed in movies as such, has never had a professional fight.
