Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these Disney film titles would be a fitting description for England's Harry Kane in Euro 2020?

Answer: The Lion King

The lion is one of the national symbols of England, and the England team's badge has three lions on it (hence the Euro 1996 anthem 'Three Lions', which experienced a revival during the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020). Harry Kane was captain of the England team during Euro 2020. Fittingly, his star sign is Leo. England's women's team are nicknamed the 'Lionesses'. At Euro 2020, England reached their first final since 1966, but lost to Italy on penalties.

'The Lion King' was released in 1994 and tells the story of Simba, a young African lion cub whose father Mufasa is murdered by his evil uncle Scar. Simba runs away and befriends Pumbaa, a warthog, and Timon, a meerkat. As an adult, he returns to his home territory to overthrow Scar and claim leadership of the pride. Elton John composed the music for the soundtrack, while Tim Rice wrote the lyrics.
2. What nickname did Everton fans give forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, much to the annoyance of his father? (He's scored some thumpers in his time.)

Answer: Bambi

Everton bought Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Sheffield United in 2016. He was nicknamed 'Bambi' or 'Bambi on Ice' by Everton fans due to his ungainly performance on the pitch. In spite of this, he was Everton's top scorer in the 2020-2021 season, and former Everton striker-turned-coach Duncan Ferguson has been credited with aiding Calvert-Lewin in his development. When Calvert-Lewin scored his first goal for England against Wales in October 2020, his father Karlda posted an open letter on Facebook, saying, "You called him 'Bambi on Ice', but Bambi has found his skates!"

'Bambi' was released in 1942 and was based on the book by Felix Salten. Bambi is a young deer who will one day become the Great Prince of the Forest; his mother is killed by a hunter, an enemy the animals call 'Man'. One of his closest friends is Thumper, a rabbit, who teaches him to walk.
3. Which Disney film title best describes Liverpool's performance in the 2019-2020 season? (It's quite fitting that they wear red.)

Answer: The Incredibles

Under Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool enjoyed a major renaissance and won their first league title in thirty years. It was an unusual season, with a break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and teams playing in empty stadiums, though this did not stop Liverpool or their fans celebrating their historic title. They finished the season with a massive 99 points and an almost unbeaten run, losing only three games. Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah was their top scorer with a total of 23 goals.

'The Incredibles' was released in 2004 and features a family of superheroes, the Parrs. Dad Bob (aka Mr Incredible) has superhuman strength; mum Helen (aka Elastigirl) can stretch her body; son Dash has super speed; daughter Violet can turn invisible; and baby Jack-Jack is a shapeshifter. Bob and Helen are retired, but end up going back into the superhero business and battling Syndrome, a fan of Mr Incredible who has turned supervillain.
4. Which legendary hero - and Disney movie star - is also the mascot of Nottingham Forest?

Answer: Robin Hood

Nottingham Forest actually started out as a shinty team (shinty being nothing like football - it's an Irish game played with sticks). Their symbol is an oak tree, with the club's signature badge being introduced in 1974, and the legendary outlaw of Sherwood Forest is their mascot. Forest's ground, the City Ground, even has a luxury area called the Robin Hood Suite.

'Robin Hood' - which, incidentally, is my favourite Disney film - was released in 1973. It puts a twist on the legend of Robin Hood by casting the characters as animals; Robin himself is a fox, Little John is a bear, King John (and Richard the Lionheart) are lions, and so on. Walt Disney had previously expressed interest in making a film of the tale of 'Reynard the Fox', which inspired designer Ken Anderson to pitch an animal version of the tale.
5. Which Disney film best describes the German national team from 1998 to 2006, when they had a certain Herr Kahn between the sticks?

Answer: Oliver & Company

The formidable Oliver Kahn took over from Andreas Köpke as the main goalkeeper for the German national team, following Köpke's retirement in 1998. Kahn succeeded another Oliver, Oliver Bierhoff, as Germany's captain in 2002. Although Kahn started out at his local team of Karlsruher FC, the majority of his club career was at Bayern Munich, where he spent fourteen years and racked up 429 appearances. Both he and Manuel Neuer, also of Bayern Munich, are among the record holders of the most clean sheets in the Bundesliga.

'Oliver & Company' was released in 1988 and is a modern take on Charles Dickens' 'Oliver Twist', where Oliver is an adorable ginger kitten and Fagin's gang of orphans are dogs, among them the Artful Dodger (or just 'Dodger'). Fagin lives on a barge and is menaced by Bill Sykes, a loan shark, and his pair of Dobermanns. Instead of Mr Brownlow, Oliver is adopted by Jenny, a rich little girl.
6. Huddersfield Town were relegated from the Premier League in 2019. They lost 4-1 at home to Leicester City. Which Disney film best describes this fixture? (Hint: think of the teams' nicknames.)

Answer: The Fox and the Hound

Leicester are nicknamed the Foxes and have had a fox on their badge (and on the 'Match of the Day' opening, are represented by a blue fox) since 1948. This is because of Leicestershire's tradition of fox hunting; it is even the territory of the Quorn Hunt, one of England's oldest hunting packs. Huddersfield Town, meanwhile, are the Terriers (as in Yorkshire terrier - there's one on their club badge). With Leicester finishing ninth and Huddersfield having a dismal season, in which they only won three games and finished with a measly sixteen points, it's fair to say that the dogs did not come out on top this time!

'The Fox and the Hound' was released in 1981 and is loosely based on a book by Daniel P Mannix. It tells the story of Tod, a fox cub adopted by a farmer, and Copper, a puppy adopted by her neighbour, a hunter called Amos. The two animals are friends at first, but Copper is raised as a fox hunting dog and Tod's friends warn him that Copper will become his enemy. As adults, Tod protects Copper from a bear and in return, Copper prevents Amos from shooting Tod.
7. Rotherham United were due to play Queen's Park Rangers on 13th February 2021, but they had to let it go due to pitch conditions. Which Disney film title best describes the state of the pitch?

Answer: frozen

Even in these days of heated pitches and carefully-tended turf, bad weather can still mean games being cancelled, and a cold spell in South Yorkshire in 2021 resulted in matches being cancelled. Rotherham's website stated that the surface of the pitch was unsafe to play on. The match was rescheduled in April, and Rotherham came back from being 1-0 down to beat QPR 3-1. It is unknown whether any of the Rotherham squad stated that the cold never bothered them anyway.

'Frozen' was released in 2013 and is loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Snow Queen'. It is one of Disney's highest-grossing films of all time, with Elsa in particular becoming one of Disney's most notable characters. Instead of a girl going on a quest to save her friend from the Snow Queen, 'Frozen' features two sisters, Elsa - who has the ability to manipulate ice, a power which frightens her parents - and Anna. Elsa's powers go into overload when she becomes queen of Arandelle, and she goes into hiding. The scene where she builds her ice palace features the iconic song 'Let It Go'. Anna goes on a quest to find her and end the eternal winter caused by Elsa's power.
8. Which of these Disney film titles contains the name of an Argentinian goalkeeper who has played for both Chelsea and Manchester City?

Answer: The Three Caballeros

The goalie in question is Willy Caballero. Caballero signed for Manchester City in 2014 and was picked to play in the 2015-2016 League Cup by manager Manuel Pellegrini - for whom Caballero had previously played at Málaga - instead of main goalkeeper Joe Hart. Though fans and the press initially criticised Pellegrini's decision, Caballero became the hero of the game when he saved three of Liverpool's penalties in the League Cup final. He joined Chelsea in 2017, and when the 2019 League Cup final against Manchester City went to penalties, manager Maurizio Sarri attempted to bring him on as a substitute for Kepa Arrizabalaga, who refused to leave the pitch. Chelsea subsequently lost 3-4.

'The Three Caballeros' was released in 1944 and stars Donald Duck and two friends, Brazilian parrot José Carioca (who had previously appeared in 'Saludos Amigos') and Mexican rooster Panchito Pistoles. It also features various Latin American singers in its live action sections. Unlike the other films in this quiz, rather than being one main plot, it is a series of stories linked together by Donald Duck celebrating his birthday. The film was made as part of the USA's Good Neighbour policy towards Latin America.
9. Plenty of footballers have starred in adverts over the years. Gary Lineker hawked Walkers' Crisps, Shinji Kagawa did an advert for SoftBank with a talking shiba inu, Manuel Neuer promoted Nutella, and poor Gareth Southgate had to wear a paper bag over his head for a Pizza Hut advert. What kind of product did Thierry 'va-va-voom' Henry advertise? (Ask Lightning McQueen!)

Answer: cars

Arsenal signed Thierry Henry from Monaco in 1999, and he went on to be one of their all-time top scorers, featuring in Arsène Wenger's 'Invincibles' side of 2003-2004. He joined Barcelona in 2007 and won a treble with them in 2009, and was also capped 123 times for France. After retiring from football, he joined Roberto Martinez's Belgium team coaching staff, before stints managing Monaco and Montreal Impact (neither of which worked out). In 2002, he appeared in an advert for the Renault Clio II, with the slogan 'va-va-voom'. His then girlfriend, Nicole Merry, also appeared in the advert.

'Cars' was released in 2006, and hot-blooded red race car Lightning McQueen is its main character. While looking for Mack, his big rig, Lightning ends up in the little town of Radiator Springs and is made to do community service as punishment for damaging its roads. Doc Hudson, the town judge, turns out to be a former racing champion based on the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. Racing drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Michael Schumacher and Mario Andretti all had cameos.
10. Which of these Disney film titles is also the first name of Italian forward Toni, formerly of Bayern Munich, Fiorentina and Juventus?

Answer: Luca

Luca Toni is one of Italy's highest-scoring players of all time, scoring a total of 300 goals in over 500 appearances. He started out at lower division clubs such as Tuscany-based Empoli, Brescia (alongside Pep Guardiola and Roberto Baggio) and the now defunct Lodigiani, before getting his big break at Palermo, who were promoted to the Serie A in 2004; they qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time the following season. To the ire of Palermo's fans, he signed for Fiorentina in 2005 and returned in 2012. He was also capped 47 times for Italy, with his first call-up in 2004, and featured in Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning squad.

'Luca' was released in 2021 and was set in Italy, and based on various Italian folktales. The title character is a sea monster who changes into a human boy when on dry land, but returns to his true form when wet. Luca and his friend and fellow sea monster Alberto run away from home and enter a triathlon, along with their human friend, Giulia, to win money to buy a Vespa.
