Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Tour has actually been to England before 2007. The first saw a brief visit to Plymouth in 1974. What year did the Tour de France arrive in Britain for a second time?

Answer: 1994

The Tour went from Dover to Brighton on Stage 4 of the 1994 tour, and then went to Portsmouth and Hampshire on Stage 5. British rider Chris Boardman won the Prologue of the Tour in Lille, but had lost it by the time the Tour came to England. British rider Sean Yates also wore the Maillot Jaune in the 1994 tour, but by this time the race had left England. Spaniard Miguel Indurain powered to his 4th Tour win in this race.
2. In 2007, there was the largest number of Brits in the Tour for around 20 years. How many riders in the 2007 race were from Britain?

Answer: 5

Saunier Duval rider David Millar and Cofidis' Bradley Wiggins were the two Brits from 2006 competing in 2007s race again, and joining them were Liquigas' Charles Wegelius, who had rode the Giro D'Italia before but not Le Tour, T-Mobile's Mark Cavendish, who had experienced many sprint successes in 2006, and Team Barloworld's Geraint Thomas. Thomas was also the youngest rider in the 2007 Tour.
3. Which rider won the Prologue stage around the streets of London?

Answer: Fabian Cancellara

Swiss rider Cancellara of the CSC team won the Prologue on the 7.9km stage in under 9 minutes. Second placed German rider Andreas Kloden, of the Astana-Wurth team, was about 13 seconds behind. George Hincapie of Discovery was third, followed closely by Londoner Bradley Wiggins. David Zabriskie, from Salt Lake City, Utah, had a slightly disappointing race, finishing 11th despite winning the Dauphine Libere prologue earlier in the year.
4. Which of the riders under 26-years old in the Tour wore the white Young Riders jersey at the end of the Prologue?

Answer: Vladimir Gusev

Gusev, who won the Tour of Belgium in 2007, won the jersey after a very impressive Prologue riding for the Discovery team. Thomas Dekker, representing Rabobank, was second in this competition after the Prologue, with Contador 4th, also with Discovery, and Bonnet 5th for Credit Agricole.
5. The Prologue is also important for sprinters and climbers, to make sure they can get a good time so they can challenge for the Maillot Jaune a few days later. However, one sprinter unfortunately crashed in Hyde Park. Which sprinter was this?

Answer: Stuart O'Grady

O'Grady, 33, had worn the Maillot Jaune in previous Tour's, but had probably blown his chances of wearing it in 2007 after a crash in the Prologue stage. He had gone through the previous time-check in first place of those riders who had already gone through, so he looked like he would put in a good time.
6. Which team finished the Prologue stage in the lead of the Team Classification?

Answer: Astana-Wurth

The Astana team led by Kazakh Alexander Vinokourov were the team in the lead in the Team Classification at the end of the Prologue, mainly down to the performances of Andreas Kloden and Vinokourov in the Prologue. Cancellara's CSC team finished second, whilst Hincapie and Gusev helped Discovery into third place at this early stage of the Tour.
7. In Stage 1, and the Tour leaving London for Kent, which home favourite attacked early on and kept himself in front of the peloton?

Answer: David Millar

Millar, who finished in the top 20 in the Prologue, was looking to pick up a few time bonuses and some prestige at being the leader of the race in England. He was only ever provisional leader in Stage 1 though, after being caught well before the end of the stage. Nevertheless, time bonuses ensured that he moved up to 3rd place by the end of this stage.
8. Which one of these riders wasn't involved in the breakaway that took place between London to Canterbury?

Answer: David De La Fuente

Grivko was looking to pick up a stage win for the Milram team, and Bichot and Auge may have been looking to become the King of the Mountains after the first stage. However, Millar pipped them both to the post, with the help of teammate David De La Fuente, who held the polka dot jersey for a short period in 2006s Tour.
9. Which sprinter won the stage going into Canterbury?

Answer: Robbie McEwen

McEwen easily took the stage win ahead of Thor Hushovd in second place and Tom Boonen in third, after the latter two sprinters mis-timed their attacks. The victory was especially remarkable as McEwen had been involved in a crash with about 20km to go in the stage, and he had to be helped back to the peloton by team members in his Predictor-Lotto team.

The same crash also saw British hopeful Mark Cavendish ruled out of contention for a stage win on home soil.
10. Which rider wore the number 1 for the 2007 Tour?

Answer: No one

Because of the ongoing fallout from last year's Tour involving Floyd Landis, no one had been allocated the number 1, as Landis' Phonak team are not involved in the Tour. Pereiro's Caisse D'Epargne team have been given the numbers 11-19, and Pereiro was the last rider to ride the Prologue, having finished second in the Tour in 2006.
