Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the 2005 Champions League Final held?

Answer: Ataturk Stadium, Istanbul.

The Atataurk Stadium is noted for being remote and there were fears the tens of thousands of fans travelling there would mean large delays and long travelling times (fears of up to three hours) for the usual one hour trip from the city centre, but no such delays occurred.
2. Eight of AC Milan's starting 11 already had at least one Champions League winners medal. Seven of them had gained them playing for Milan but Jaap Stam had won his medal playing for who?

Answer: Manchester United

Manchester United's second victory in Europe's premier club competition came against Bayern Munich in a final, rivaled in drama only by the Liverpool AC Milan final. Stam was a pivotal player in United's defence that season in which they lifted the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League trophies.

Many of Milan's players had previously won the trophy at Old Trafford in 2003. Maldini had been at the club so long he had also won the trophy in 1989, 1990 and 1994 with Milan.
3. Which Liverpool player started the match despite a season decimated by injury and had to be substituted early on?

Answer: Harry Kewell

The Australian left footer began the match despite playing less than half of Liverpool's Premier League games and being injured for a lot of the season. He came off injured after 23 minutes to be replaced by Smicer.
4. The worst possible start for Liverpool, Milan scored at the end of the very first minute. Which player volleyed awkwardly in?

Answer: Paolo Maldini

Maldini scored only his second ever Champions League goal to give Milan a dream start.
5. Hernan Crespo added two more goals for the Italians before half-time to make it 3-0, and allow AC Milan one hand on the trophy. Which football club had sent Crespo to Milan on loan for that season?

Answer: Chelsea

Crespo moved to Stamford Bridge for the 2003-04 season, but despite a decent scoring record when he did play, new manager Jose Mourinho sent him on loan to AC Milan in the 2004-05 season. Liverpool had defeated Chelsea in the semi finals.
6. Liverpool needed an ealy goal in the second half to even think of coming back into the match. They did just that with a pin point header from the captain. Who was the captain?

Answer: Steven Gerrard

Gerrard had not been noticeable in the first half but was his usual brilliant self in the second half beginning with his goal on 54 minutes. He also won the penalty from which Alonso (eventually) scored. At the end of the match, when Liverpool was presented with the trophy, the UEFA official motioned to give it to Jamie Carragher to lift up in triumph, but Carragher gestured towards Gerrard who rightly, as captain, lifted the trophy.

Michael Owen had transferred to Real Madrid in the summer beforehand so didn't get a medal.
7. Minutes after Gerrard's goal, which midfielder scored Liverpool's second goal?

Answer: Vladimir Smicer

Smicer was playing his last game for Liverpool after being told by boss Rafael Benitez, that he would not be offered a new contract in the summer. Smicer had been at the club for six years and in the 2004-05 season, mostly made substitute appearances. He also scored Liverpool's last spot kick in the shootout to give them the 3-2 lead.
8. Not five minutes after their second goal, Liverpool broke Italian hearts by equalising. Steven Gerrard was fouled in the area. Who missed the spot kick only to power in the rebound?

Answer: Xabi Alonso

The young Spaniard's kick was saved, but Dida could only push it back out to Alonso who fired high into the net with his left foot.
9. After finishing 3-3 after 90 minutes, and 30 minutes of goal-less silver goal extra time, the match was decided on penalties. Milan missed their first two and Liverpool scored their first two. Milan then scored, followed by a miss from Riise making it 2-1 after three each. Kaka then equalised for Milan only for Smicer to tuck his away. Which Milan player handed Liverpool the cup by having his weak kick saved by Jerzy Dudek?

Answer: Andriy Shevchenko

The Ukranian star missed his penalty which needed to go in for Milan to remain with a chance of winning. He had also missed a very easy chance at the very end of extra time. Despite these though, he had a decent game causing many problems in the Liverpool defence with his movement.
10. How many times had Liverpool won the European Cup/Champions League prior to this match?

Answer: 4

Liverpool had previously won the European Cup in 1977 (3-1 against Borussia Moenchengladbach), 1978 (1-0 against FC Bruges), 1981 (1-0 against Real Madrid), and 1984 (1-1, 4-2 on penalties against AS Roma). Because this was their fifth win, Liverpool were allowed to keep the trophy indefinitely.
