Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1920
Answer: Akron Pros
The Dayton Triangles beat the Columbus Panhandles 14-0 in the APFL's first ever game, but neither team competed for the championship. The league title that first year went to the Akron Pros, who posted an 8-0-3 record. Back then ties didn't count at all in the standings, so they were the first team to ever post a perfect record with a 100 percent win percentage.
2. 1921
Answer: Chicago Staleys
In the league's second year of existence, following a controversial championship the year before, official standings were issued for the first time. The year before any game a team in the league played counted on it's record. For this season, only games against other APFL teams would count in the standings.
The Chicago Staleys, who had played in Decatur, Ill. the year before, posted a 9-1-1 record and were awarded the league championship over the Buffalo All-Americans, which had a 9-1-2 record. Both team's only losses came to each other.
3. 1922
Answer: Canton Bulldogs
The Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cardinals finished second and third in the standings, but neither could hang with the Canton Bulldogs who finished undefeated at 10-0-2. This was the first season the league was officially called the NFL.
The Hammond Pros played only six games that season, setting a record for futility. They didn't score a single point in the entire season.
There still was no playoff system, and league champions were decided based on standings alone.
4. 1923
Answer: Canton Bulldogs
The Bulldogs became the first team in NFL history to repeat as champions. For the season they posted an 11-0-1 record. They lead the league in scoring with an average of 20.5 points per game, while giving up only 19 points or 1.5 per game all season.
5. 1924
Answer: Cleveland Bulldogs
The Bulldogs won the championship by way of putting up less ties than the Chicago Bears. Both teams lost only once, but Cleveland went 7-1-1, while Chicago went 6-1-4. Ties still didn't count in the standings, so had Chicago managed to win any one of the three more ties it had than Cleveland it would have tied or won the league title.
The Frankford Yellow Jackets won 11 games that year, but lost twice with an additional tie while playing the most games of any team in the league.
6. 1925
Answer: Chicago Cardinals
The Chicago Cardinals won the championship after the Pottsville Maroons were deemed ineligible despite posting a better season record. The Maroons were 13-2 on the season (Including three non-league games) while Chicago was 11-2. Pottsville was suspended after they played an exhibition game against a team from the University of Notre Dame before the end of the official NFL season.
7. 1926
Answer: Frankford Yellow Jackets
The Yellow Jackets posted a 14-1-2 record that season to win the championship. The winner was still determined only by record and not a playoff. The American Football League champions that year were the Philadelphia Quakers, a team from the same state as the Jackets. While it was proposed, no interleague championship game was played that year.
8. 1927
Answer: New York Giants
With an 11-1-1 record, and giving up only 20 points all season the Giants were the clear-cut champions in 1927. Their one loss was 6-0 to the Cleveland Bulldogs. The team lost an exhibition game 13-6 to the Hominy Indians, a team comprised of all native Americans.
9. 1928
Answer: Providence Steam Roller
With an 8-1-2 record Providence won the championship that year. They beat the runner-up Frankford Yellow Jackets 6-0 in the two teams only meeting that year. Frankford ended up with an 11-3-2 record. The Chicago Cardinals (7) and the Dayton Triangles (9) both failed to score in double digits for the entire season.
10. 1929
Answer: Green Bay Packers
Green Bay beat the New York Giants 20-6 in a midseason matchup between the two teams. That margin ended up deciding the championship as Green Bay finished 12-0-1 and New York ended 13-1-1. The championship was still decided by regular season standings at that point in history.
(Green Bay finished with a 1.000 pct vs. .929 for the NY Giants, to take the title)

The first 5 quizzes cover the NFL championship games for the first 50 years of the NFL. The last 4 over lap with the first four Super Bowls, but still only cover the NFL title game, not the Super Bowl. Quiz #6 on this list covers the AFL champions from the 10 years that was an independent league.
