Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1966
Answer: Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens won their second straight title. The Red Wings lost in the finals for the fourth time in six years, all coming under coach Sid Abel. This year the series was decided in six games.
2. 1967
Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto's era of dominance ended after this season, but they ended on top. They won the Cup for the fourth time in six years. They wouldn't win again for the rest of the century.
3. 1968
Answer: Montreal Canadiens
The NHL expanded from 6 to 12 teams this season, and put all of the new teams in a division among themselves. That meant an expansion team would make the Stanley Cup finals.
Legendary coach Scotty Bowman was hired as the head coach mid-year for St. Louis and led them to the finals, where they were swept by the Canadiens. This was the first of 13 finals appearances for Bowman-led teams.
4. 1969
Answer: Montreal Canadiens
Same two teams, same result. St. Louis was outmatched and swept 4-0. Bowman, who would win a record nine Stanley Cups as a coach, was still winless in games on the biggest stage.
5. 1970
Answer: Boston Bruins
Bowman's Blues returned to the finals for a third straight year. This year they had a new opponent and won - exactly the same number of games. His team was swept out of the finals for the third straight year. He returned to the team the following year, but left part-way through the season. He went on to decades of success; the Blues were decidedly average for a long time after he left.
6. 1971
Answer: Montreal Canadiens
For the third time in four seasons the Canadiens won the title. It was also the third different head coach to lead them to the title in that stretch. This year Al MacNeil was the man. They beat the Black Hawks 4-3.
7. 1972
Answer: Boston Bruins
The series went six games to see the Bruins best the New York Rangers. It was the fifth Cup for the Bruins.
8. 1973
Answer: Montreal Canadiens
In his second season in Montreal, and two years removed from coaching in the finals for St. Louis, Scotty Bowman won his first finals game and a championship. They beat the Black Hawks 4-2.
9. 1974
Answer: Philadelphia Flyers
It was the first Stanley Cup Finals appearance for the Flyers. They beat the Boston Bruins 4-2.
10. 1975
