Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player in history to hit 700 home runs?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth reached the 700-mark in his final Yankee season in 1934. He retired the following season as a Boston Brave with 714. Aaron was second to hit 700, and reached the mark in 1973 with the Atlanta Braves. Bonds reached 700 in 2004 with the Giants. Willie Mays retired with 660.
2. In 2005, the Chicago White Sox won their first World Series since 1917. Which team did they defeat in the series to stop their losing streak?

Answer: Houston Astros

The others were all American League teams as were the White Sox. Helmed by Pants Rowland in 1917, the White Sox defeated the New York Giants four games to two. In 2005, they defeated the Astros four games to none. Jermaine Dye was the series MVP.
3. Which manager took over the Boston Red Sox in 2004, took them to the World Series, then another trip to the promised land in 2007?

Answer: Terry Francona

Terry took over from Little, after Little didn't produce in 2002 and 2003. The Red Sox skunked the Cardinals in 2004, then kept the scent strong by blanking the Rockies in 2007. Mike Lowell was Boston's World Series MVP in 2007.
4. In 1989, which Ranger pitcher was the first in baseball history to reach 5000 career strikeouts?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

The others weren't pitchers. Ryan retired with 5714 strikeouts, a record not likely to ever be duplicated. He was also the first pitcher to strike out 300 batters in a season after the age of 40. Nolan retired in 1993 after 27 seasons, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999.
5. In the 2000 season, the New York Yankees won their third consecutive World Series title in a win against the Mets. Who was the series MVP?

Answer: Derek Jeter

The others were all former Yankees, but all had died before the 2000 season. After winning the 1996 Rookie of the Year award, Derek won the 2000 All-Star MVP, and also won the 2000 World Series MVP for his .409 average and hitting two home runs. The Yankees won the series four games to one against the Mets.
6. Which of the following hit 50 or more home runs in four consecutive seasons?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

Mays hit 50+ in a season twice, and did it 10 years apart. Ruth hit 50+ in a season four times, but none more than twice consecutively. Bonds hit over 50 home runs in only one season in his career, 73 in 2001. Sosa hit 66 in 1998, then 63, then 50, and finally 64 in 2001.
7. In which decade was Babe Ruth inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame?

Answer: 1930s

The Hall of Fame began in 1936, one year after the Babe retired with the Boston Braves. He was amongst the first five inducted along with Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson. Ruth died in 1948.
8. In 2003, a Chicago Cubs player cried foul late in the NCLS Championship series, when spectator Steve Bartman allegedly interfered with a foul ball down the left field line. Who was the left fielder that claimed interference?

Answer: Moises Alou

The others were former Cubs, but all had retired before the 2003 season. The Cubs went on to lose to the Marlins in the NLCS, four games to three. There were many other issues in that game other than the Bartman incident, that resulted in the Cubs losing.

The Marlins went on to the World Series, and defeated the Yankees four games to two. Alou began his MLB career as a Pittsburgh Pirate, then was runner-up to the MVP in 1992 with the Expos. He followed that up with a third place finish for the NL MVP in 1994.
9. The great Stan Musial spent his entire career with which team?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

Arguably the greatest player in history, Musial spent 22 seasons in Major League baseball, and all with the Cardinals. He won three NL MVP awards, won seven batting titles, and led the league six times in hits. Stan went to four World Series, winning three. His sole series home run came in 1944 against the Browns. He was inducted into the hall in 1969.
10. In 2007, which of the following pitchers won his 300th game?

Answer: Tom Glavine

The other pitchers all retired 14 years earlier. After spending 16 seasons with the Braves, Glavine won his 300th with the New York Mets. In 2008 in his 22nd season, Tom was back with the Braves as a free agent.
