Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When you get to the pro shop you are asked to pay a 'greens fee'. What is this for?

Answer: The daily fee rate that the course charges to play 18 holes

Greens fees is the rate course charge to play 18 holes of golf. A separate charge for a riding golf cart is in addition to the rate to play, as some people prefer to walk. Playing a round of golf, you will generally walk about 5 miles.
2. The head pro tells you to check in with the 'starter'. What does he expect you to do?

Answer: Present your receipt to the man at the first tee box who will tell you when to tee off

Starters regulate the first tee box. Courses often employ marshalls as well. Both starters and marshalls are there to make sure the course is being taken care of and to regulate the pace of play.
3. What is the maximum number of clubs you are allowed to carry in your bag during a PGA governed competition?

Answer: 14

You are allowed by PGA rules to carry up to 14 clubs in your bag. Most equipment manufactures don't make golf bags with more than 14 slots to place your clubs because of this.
4. After the first hole, the person who tees off first is determined by the lowest score on the previous hole. This is known as "having the________".

Answer: Honor

Having 'the honors' on the tee box, filling divots with sand, playing in turn, are all parts of golf etiquette. These things are not written rules of the game, but rather the etiquette that guides golfers and makes it an honorable game.
5. A golf ball when landing on a green will often leave an indentation known as a ball mark. When should you repair your ball mark?

Answer: Before or after you putt, certainly before you leave the green

You should always repair your ball mark and several others if you find them. This helps the greens to heal faster so that putting will be a smooth experience for players behind you.
6. Which of the following is not a golf equipment manufacturer?

Answer: MaxOut

There are many excellent golf equipment manufacturers. Selecting equipment and enjoying the game does not have to be expensive.
7. If the pro shop tells you it's "cart path only", what do they mean?

Answer: You are only allowed to drive the golf carts on the designated paths

Courses often have "cart path only" designations when it's a newly opened facility or after heavy rains. This protects the fairways from abuse by heavy golf carts.
8. If you score two under par on a given hole, this is called a what?

Answer: Eagle

If the par on a hole is five, an eagle would be a score of three. If the par on a hole is four, an eagle would be a score of two. On a par three, an eagle would be a hole-in-one.
9. A foursome is what?

Answer: A group of four players

Golf courses encourage groups of four to play to maximize rounds played per day.
10. Who putts first when everyone reaches the green?

Answer: The person farthest away from the hole

People farthest away putt first so that they won't step on the line of other putters. A foot print on the soft grass of the green that falls in the intended line of someone elses putt, can affect the ball when it is putted.
